Sneak Peek: The Newest Compass Rose

Here's a tiny part of the next release from Compass Rose Toolworks.
It's a little selfish, but I love showing a snippet of an upcoming tool and reading the guesses. I'm always blown away by your analysis and creativity. I didn't think anyone could possibly guess the Vise Block (especially since we invented it) but two of you got it right on the money.
Amazing.
Honestly, your guesses also spark ideas for other things we might make. So, here's a tiny shot of our next tool. What do you think it is? (This one's probably not too hard, but we'll see.)
Oh, and we're hard at work developing the injection-molded vise block. Naively, I thought we were going to send the CAD file to the molding shop and they'd split out a run of vise blocks (after we paid for the mold to be machined).
How wrong I was! Injection molding is SO complicated and requires the walls of the product to be quite thin to prevent warping. Our little product needs a complete redesign before it can be produced. There's an engineer involved. Crazy.
Many folks have requested a left-handed vise block and we're looking hard at that possibility. We very much want to have a leftie version, but cost is a factor.
We'll keep you posted.
See you tomorrow.

Yes! It's a 6120-DSW. I do know that you're a Tele slinger yourself!
Michael Bennett
Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to produce the parts for a shooting board on a table saw? It seems like CNCs are all the rage right now and it seems that makers are finding any reason to use one. I think it is because they're still trying to justify the cost to themselves. I look at it like how you can often cut something faster with a hand saw than it takes to set up a table saw. You can cut things faster on a table saw than it takes to program a CNC.
Rex Krueger
Yes! (And I just noticed your Gretsch guitar in your avatar. Awesome.)
Jorge Harada
Bench hook?
Benjamin Frayser
It needs to be. For those times when you cut on the line instead of to the side of the line

Injection molded parts aren't all that complicated to design. Just make sure you keep wall stock uniform, define a parting line, incorporate appropriate draft angles, design for mold flow,.... oh if there are actions required in the part you need to allow for transitioning of most of those as well. Yeah I'm being somewhat a smart arse. It is critical that you try to optimize a design so that the tooling is a simple as possible, so the processing is as easy as possible and that you still get the strength you need in your part, while using the least material possible.
Russell Gough
Oh I believe you!!
Mike Smith
I'd definitely buy one, I never have the correct size dowels when I need them. I'd make my own, but that won't help Compass Rose grow... and I do like a cheeky tool purchase.
Rex Krueger
We are also hoping for a shooting board, but finding a reliable CNC shop that does big orders at a good price is harder than you think. Much harder.
Rex Krueger
Good one.
Rex Krueger
Interesting, but no.
Rex Krueger
Bench hook. Nicely done.
Rex Krueger
Some sort of jig indeed.
Rex Krueger
You have it! Bench hooks. Bravo!
Rex Krueger
Warm. Not hot, but warm.
Rex Krueger
Ha! Good one.
Rex Krueger
Nope, but that's a good idea. I'll think about that one.
Rex Krueger
A fine and funny guess, but no.
Russell Gough
You’ve already said it’s not one, but I was truly hoping for a shooting board. lol
DALE PATTON
I could hang that next to my Cable Stretcher.
DALE PATTON
Compass Rose Termite Trap?
Clint
A drill guide to help make straight holes with a bit brace?
Ron Paro
Bench hook
Richard C von Brecht
A space based laser cutter was my first guess but the power supply isn’t large enough. My second guess it’s some sort of alignment jig. That’s vague but the power supply is the right size.
Stuart
I am going with a CR branded bookcase to store all his videos :) Or maybe it is a bench hook / shooting board. I notice hooks getting cameo appearances more and more recently.
Pierre-Olivier Fineltin
I back you up on this! The dowel dwellinger might be the name. ;)
David Fogle
For putting in a vise?
David Fogle
Miter block?
Jerry Moomaw
CR branded plywood
Preston Shick
Darn. Was hoping the dark rings on the right pegs meant movable lol. Back to the drawing board.
Mike Smith
Erm... dowel making jig?
Thomas Hverring
Compass Rose Plywood—plywood with a logo! Get some plywood, get Compass Rose Plywood! And get it before your neighbor! Folds down for easy storage. (For some reason the Gator Grip ads from the nineties are just stuck in my head. "Get a grip, get Gator Grip!")
Rex Krueger
A very detailed analysis, but all the pegs are glued in place. It is not a shooting board, but I expected that guess to be more popular. It is not for the table saw. (I admit, I generally think table saws are unreasonably dangerous if you can't get a SawStop. I kind of want to nudge people away from them.)
Rex Krueger
Fascinating! I never would have thought of that...but, alas, no.
Rex Krueger
Is that a thing?
Rex Krueger
Yes...but that's a very broad guess.
Preston Shick
One visible peg glued into the top board, two visible pegs with space those are glued into the bottom board. So the top is a moveable part. ..... Shooting board or table saw jig?
DeQster
What about sending it to a 3D print farm at quantity? Cast molding these might be at a loss, but with sufficient quantity you might be able to afford it sent to an outfit like Shapeways or similar (but cheaper). Carbon fiber filled nylon would be tough as heck. Also, the left version would certainly be better done this way as long as you could guarantee durability equal to that of the right hand. Left hand molds are NOT cheap, and often those parts are made at a loss. I used to work in compound bows, those were not really profitable. 😁
Joe Meyer
Pre set hole compass 90, 25,45.
Benjamin Frayser
Board stretcher!
Koen de Boeve
is it some sort of a vise or clamp to align something?
Rex Krueger
It is a dowel, but it is not a miter jig. (Now that you mention it, though, that's an interesting idea...)
Rex Krueger
Good one.
Rex Krueger
Interesting! (But no.)
Koen de Boeve
perhaps that dowel (or at least I think that it is a dowel ) is a pivot point, maybe a mitre jig?
Koen de Boeve
bolt heads, so removable? overhang, but for what?is it an adjustable stop block?
Dean Wight
Jello mold
John Kamenik
That was my immediate thought as well. Best guess is those are pins to register a replaceable fence. However, most shooting boards are also bench hooks, and I don't see that part.
Tanel Mõttus
Dovetail template?
Rex Krueger
Nope! (Those aren't magnets, but that's a creative guess.)
Rex Krueger
Trying to make the vise block with any subtractive process is a loser. Too much material lost or too much cost in assembling the pieces. Good ideas, though!
Rex Krueger
Nope! (But we've considered it, so you're in the ballpark.)
Rex Krueger
Nope! But your guess makes a lot of sense.
Rex Krueger
Nope! (Good guess.)
Caillin Campsie
That's my gut feeling too. The pins might be used to locate various accessories
Peter Svedman
Its a saw guide. Magnets.
Benjamin Fouty
It’s a paddlin’ paddle fpr initiating new woodworkers. On the vise block, what is the current material, specifically? Have you considered press molded polypropylene or a laser cut wooden block? Press molding has much cheaper tooling and can be thicker. Not sure if they’d do something so small. Laser cut plywood blocks can be done at box tool makers and are about an inch thick.
Geoffrey Wilson
Straight edge!

Plug cutter?
