From my understanding, it's insurance that limits people's time in hospitals more than the hospitals. They don't care how much they charge you if they don't have someone saying pointblank that they won't be paid for it. Hospitals sometimes take the gamble in terms of if someone will declare bankruptcy or not.

Woo, it took her a week to visit him and apologize? I would be bitter too. Especially 'cause I bet he doesn't have health insurance and can't afford his medical bills. An ambulance ride, surgery, and a full week in the hospital? PRICEY. Though I DO wonder why he's still stuck in that hospital bed just for his hand. I got shipped out only two days after my emergency appendectomy for a burst appendix that gone gangrenous. That kind of hand injury would require plenty of check-ups, but I doubt a hospital would want him taking up one of the beds for that long.
