Nah, I think it's very well done the way it is. This is how the story unfolds, and the middle aged pre-hetero man is not the reader. In fact you may have a look at a different perspective: Jeremy offered to play the girl, but Ted silently refused. By that he was a really good step-dad at that moment, because this was much more considerate of Jeremy's feelings. Making Jeremy strong, making clear to him "You're my boy!"
