I get that, but Derek has always been a bit egotistical, even when we first meet him in the first book as he wonders why he allowed himself to be roped into Silvie’s party’s plans. And he’s unquestionably strong. He tends to be grounded by the people around him. I could see Thomas actually calling him out now that he has some power himself. The thing about Derek is that he does stuff like, in my opinion, because he seems to want to make sure people can take care of themselves. He did something similar to Thomas when he let him get mauled in a dungeon.

SunriseCV

Haha yeah. Gonna mention it in tomorrow’s chapter. Apparently I was bad at math and somehow, one of the instructors just poofed and disappeared in the fight, so I had to add them to it. I also added more about the chatter between the the instructors. A single eye twitch prolly wasn’t enough. Nothing to change any of the next chapters, just a bit more context and remembering that there are six instructors not five.

Bro sunrise did you a re edit

For the first time after reading a chapter I frowned. I guess I felt it not quite in character for Derek to basically bully and beat up a bunch of teachers. Sure, one is a clear asshole and many folks are skeptical of his fame/power, but to humiliate the teachers like this seems…well, shallow and weak, like it is something a minor, smug villain would do. I know it’s a cliffhanger and maybe there is some redeeming next bit, but so far it feels out of character. There have to be thousands/millions of folks who are skeptical of this new guy’s strength. Just feels like an unhealthy flex just to make the students like him or to spread the truth of his abilities. Why would he care? System Universe and Path of Ascension are my favorite progression series, so don’t feel I’m just hating here. Like I said this is the very first time I was thinking “WTF?”.

Blackwolf36

I actually liked Torith as an antagonist as I felt he posed a threat that was more... Abstract? It wasn't just "I'm strong so I'm going to fight you". It was more about his political position and as you said, the threat he posed to his friends and family.

Looting Pillager

Ok I thought it was a much more difficult to heal skill like the Astrus house and their freezing skill which would be heavily frowned upon in a spar.

IBW

Didn’t see this till now but as you mentioned text can be hard to interpret sometimes. To me and a few others we felt that the original comment came off as a “I don’t like what’s happening so change it” type of comment. I now realize that’s not the case so sorry for that.

SunriseCV

Thanks for that. I am a very anxious person, so it's still hard for me to even read comments. I tend to stay away from the pacing/style comments because those are things that are pretty set in stone because of how I've been writing the story for three years, and those comments tend to slow down my writing and I start second guessing myself. Basically, they give me mini Writer's Block and the more I ruminate on them, the worse it gets--which is why I try not to interact with comments that speak about style and pacing. My favorite part about Patreon (other than the immediate--and mostly positive--reader response) is the spelling/grammar help, and especially the continuity help. There are things I forget (like the number or dragonkin Derek captured once) and it's good to have that there. As for the pacing/style, it is very slow in a serial format. Book 5 was probably my most "anti-commented" on arc I've written so far because of how long it lasted. However, when it launched on Amazon a few weeks ago, it peaked at the highest of my books and has had the second most positive response of my series so far. So, I have to take those comments with a grain of salt, if you know what I mean. I've actually very much limited my interaction and reading of comments on RoyalRoad because of the amount of those comments that I get. I've seen those comments have authors I love and respect completely pull their stories or quit writing altogether, which sucks, but I understand fully. It can be so much easier on your mental health to just write for Amazon. I appreciate your input, but sometimes comments have very negative outcomes for the authors, and I just don't want that. I'm starting to sound like a broken record now... lol.

Randragon

Thanks for the reply and clarification. Sometimes text is hard to interpret what a person is trying to say. I’ll take your feedback into consideration for when I have future input. If I don’t like a story or author, i would just unsubscribe. I won’t waste my hard earned money just so I can add toxic comments. I’m not toxic and don’t ever want to come off as toxic. So again I appreciate the reply. I really do enjoy the book and the MC even if some areas of the books are too slow for me. I also think you are doing a good job as a creator talking with your subscribers in the comments. It’s refreshing to see as a lot of other authors’ Patreon comments are completely ignored by the creator. That doesn’t make them bad creators, it just sets you apart.

SunriseCV

As for the MC’s mindset, it matches perfectly. SU is like 80% Slice of Life where Derek interacts with the people around him. It’s what I love in stories, so it’s what I write. I do not like battle after battle, I would rather read about what x character did during the week or the MC having a fun little moment with a friend.

SunriseCV

The problem is that your comment really comes off as if you hate the novel, or that you would write it like x not x. I didn’t respond because I don’t like addressing comments that seem toxic. (Which, you may not have intended it to be, but it very much came off as so. So much so that I was made aware of it by multiple readers before I even saw it.) It reads like someone saying “with all due respect,” then saying something completely disrespectful afterwards. Again, you may not have meant it that way, but multiple people took it that way. I liked IBW’s comment because I really did almost respond with the same thing, but I didn’t want to start an unnecessary argument on a chapter.

Chloe

Love that he went and sat with Thomas after beating the instructors to a pulp.

Randragon

Who said I didn’t like the book? You must be reading my comments wrong or I am portraying them incorrectly. When I said this world (system) was broken and inferior, I was comparing it to the other system that Derek was from. By the way CV introduced us to this “Great System” he made it clear to me that Derek thinks so. I love Derek’s character and OP traits. It just seems like he will be way behind his psycho “buddy” from the other system if he dinks around too long with politics. Also thats kinda weird that CV would love your comment without even addressing mine. I wasn’t even talking crap. Just pointing out the direction I would like to see the series go. But like I said, it’s not my story, so do what you want. The biggest benefit to Patreon imo, is to get feedback before publishing a book. Too many people and authors treat it like a big group of editors that help correct grammar. That may be a benefit to Patreon but it is by no means the best way to use your readers. You don’t have to do anything I say or suggest. It’s your book CV. But to ignore someone’s comment and like a comment basically telling someone to leave, is kinda jacked up. I wasn’t even talking crap about the book. Just pointing out that it is progressing slow, which doesn’t even match with your main characters mind set in the way you wrote him.

Trevor Mergen

Thanks!

IBW

Why are you here if you don’t like the book?

SunriseCV

Yeah. I'm working on it. Antagonists are tough for me with an OP MC. Trying to find the right balance of OP but still some struggle without a bunch of comments that 'this should be an easy fight for him' or 'why is he struggling so much.' That's why I use his friends as the driving factor in getting stronger and taking care of Gerald Torith and stuff in the early books. Like, Gerald wasn't a threat to him, but he was a threat to Derek's... happiness. Which made him a decent antagonist. Hopefully what comes in the next couple/few (I really don't know how long) months will work well.

Nick Holden

Damn interesting. On a side note, Derek is probably desperate for an actual antagonist.

Randragon

What’s embarrassing is that the last chapter was all about aura and Derek didn’t even crack his open in this fight. They got beat by a mere mortal with stats!

Randragon

Why stop there?! I know! The authors of LitRPGs are cliff hangin batturds. But you don’t have to be that guy. The leading lit writers are putting down 3000 word chapters and that’s without a cliff. Their Cliff chapters are around 4000 words. Congrats on the 2700 words (It was actually 2664 words). Like I said before, and Patreon won’t let me grab my previous comments on my phone, it’s time for Derek to say… “F this boring crap” it time to move on and start wrecking stuff in a good way. This world (system) is broken and inferior. Time to wake this world up and move on toward supremacy! They need to rethink how they grow and cultivate and start training the weak to become strong. If they don’t they will be swallowed when the hunger of the other system arrives. Derek has already scoffed at the name of this system. The “Great System”. What a laugh. I did like this chapter and I hope that the next chapter isn’t a cliff. IT. IS. TIME. TO ADVANCE. But in the end, it is your book and I’m just a reader. So do what you want. Ps. Murder bunny should still be pissed she hasn’t cooked more of what she has killed. She is more of a Martha Stuart bunny than a murder bunny. Great cakes and table center pieces. Maybe the rabbit will get put away for insider trading between the nations and we won’t have to worry about her cooking in the end.

Readgold2000

they are lucky he didn't convince Silvi to come play. That would have been REALLY embarrassing for them.

Squirtle

That's why we love him lol

SunriseCV

Wait. League of Legends? I've never actually played it. I'm not a fan of MOBAs. I've also never played Dungeons and Dragons. Most of my rpg gaming early on was Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls, Phantasy Star, and a couple MMOs.

SunriseCV

It does, just not as fast. It's really good for combat because the wound doesn't regenerate as fast and is good to slow the targets down and keep them bleeding. Out of combat, it is easy enough for a healer to heal it given enough time.

SunriseCV

Lol?

Nick Holden

This series has a heavy LoL influence doesn't it hahaha

Looting Pillager

Why would he use his Rend skill? Isn't that the one that doesn't heal?

Jaden Novak

Agreed

Ronnie Lee

Don't get me wrong I love him, but he is still a dick.

Ronnie Lee

Derek's a dick

SunriseCV

I need to go on one of those two year cruises and see if I can claim it as a business expense.

Samuel Strode

Churchill had to take writing trips you could always claim Covid and need to quarantine…

SunriseCV

Haha. I'm trying. I really am. I have a full house most of the time (don't live across the street from family, you will get stuck babysitting all the time), but I'm working on getting a place all to myself in a city. I'm hoping that will increase my productivity then. I am working on at least making the chapters a bit longer each week. Like, this one was around 2700 words. So that's a start. Much better from the 1500 word chapters I did when I first started the story over 3 years ago.
