"When friends subscribe to your Patreon, you risk them actually reading your considerable hyperbole."

Jaybill McCarthy

I will neither confirm nor deny being The Friend mentioned in this article, but if I *were*, I would add that it was way better the last time I went. At that event, cars were crushed, there were "hell of flips" and there was an "anything might happen" air reminiscent of professional wrestling. This time, however, it was more like a fake sporting event that no amount of suspension of disbelief could save. We discussed rolling my twenty year old Prius down a hill into a broken upright piano, which we agreed would have been a way better use of both time and money.

A subject about which I know almost nothing, and now know a little more. Fanta, you say?

In a similar, but physically much smaller field, I must recommend the “Wheel of Death”, that thing where motorcycles ride in a circle along the walls, horizontal to the ground. I witnessed one of these (Demon Drome: Raced with the Devil… And Lost!) last year and have been profoundly changed as a result. The things those young men and women did thrilled and terrified me in equal measure. Maybe it’s because you’re close enough to high-five them as they swirl around the upper rim of the dome, sitting on the handlebars and baying for applause. Incredible. I’m sure they are on YouTube.

A bit that didn't end up working in this piece was the announcer closing the event with the plaintive and ominous line, "And remember; the true beauty of monster jams—and the lesson for us all — is that each of us must destroy the thing he loves most." Much more appropriate for a demolition derby, which I bet they still have anywhere in Oregon except Portland. (I mean, we have street takeovers just like any respectable city, but those usually involve more collateral damage and worse music.)

To be fair, demolition derbies still definitely exist, if you want to see a glimmer of the former gladiatorial spectacle of Monster Jam. I've been to several that were just free for whoever was willing to show up and watch people ruin their vehicles. The pathos of a man in the middle of a rain-drenched field of mud, tearfully begging his destroyed car to start and move before he was disqualified, would have been worth whatever they wanted at the gate. There are stakes at demolition derbies.

If I have a fundamental message for anyone, it’s Look For The Irony, so this checks out hard

Has the Grave that the Digger been working on all these years been... ours???

Joe Locastro

It's the one place a 4.50 cheeseburger still feels worth exactly that amount of money with zero guilt. And the daytime beer your kid never sees you drink is finally enjoyed in the open while you drop twenty on the jukebox so no one dares harsh your vibe for the next 60 minutes. Seriously, buy a cheap ball and your own shoes, and bowling becomes The Thing To Do.

Greed can’t ruin gravity. Let us take to the lanes.

Halfway through: Hey I am a single dad, got a son I could take to see one of these, might be fun ya aknow? Done reading: Fuck me. Trying to figure out what kinda circus satisfies the generation of bite-sized hand-held stimulus is really hard I tell you. But he loves him some bowling.
