NorCal native who moved to Wisconsin at 17, left at 22, and came back at 44. This piece is resonating hard. Also, almond Kringles are the best, so you might want to get on that. Also, just finished my Swedish Meatball dinner for Kwik Trip as I was reading this. They’re not bad.

I already have my top three researched Door County cherry pie stands saved in a Google Doc A man does not often encounter a finer dessert than a good, hand-baked pie filled with sweet-picked cherries and an honest measure of sugar

I fantasize about vacationing in Dore Country the way some people fantasize about about flying to Oaxaca in a plane made of psylocibin.

Arugula’s moment has passed. Give me an iceberg salad with D-cell croutons at any WI supper club instead. And thanks for the tip about kringje shipping but I had better cut myself off with the neuske’s and usingers. Watch out for hodags.

Waukesha! I once helped an older man move out of a place in Pewaukee, and discovered Cousins sandwiches. I went back and got extras for the plane. An asshole TSA guy stole my port wine cheese spread (“this could be plastic explosives”) but the hoagies were safe.

Now that I am in the WI know, everything seems to be from there. U-Line! Small things in antique stores! Liberace! We’ll be back at Christmas for my ration of Kopp’s.

As a Wisconsinite I appreciate this and am looking forward to the rest of your thoughts on our state. Also if I am not mistaken that looks like some BellaVitano on the bottom of the cheese picture, good choice.

Born and raised in Waukesha County. I've traveled and lived in a lot of other places but am back for family concerns. Wisconsin certainly has its charms and I do count food as most of them. A basically gentle landscape to walk around in when the weather isn't punishingly weird is another. The NIMBYism and xenophobia are sad here, though. Very neocon, very white, very tightfisted unless tithing. But yeah, much else to love in the rest of the state. Also I think Charlie Berens does a great job of taking reality into parody without being stupid.

I am also from (northern) Wisconsin and had the delight of taking my spouse ‘back home’ with our first born. Our daughter took to it like gangbusters, eschewing her winter coat and delighting in venison sausage and cheeses. My wife was nonplussed that you couldn’t find arugula in any supermarket, otherwise she loved it. As an aside, you can get Kringle subscriptions now- shipped frozen to your home.
