Here is some backstory for Mala:
The years of Mala’s childhood lay buried beneath a haze of drugs. A desperate attempt to smother memories too raw to face. She’d been a baby, barely a whisper of life, when a human couple plucked her from obscurity. Not out of love, but for the gleam of prestige. An adopted demon child, they thought, would be a glittering accessory to dangle before their shallow socialite circle, a living testament to their supposed virtue. But behind the polished doors of their opulent home, the truth was uglier.
Mala’s foster parents wielded cruelty like a hidden blade. Food became a weapon, dangled as a “treat” for obedience, withheld as punishment for the smallest infractions. The sting of their hands was a constant companion; a single whiff of food on her breath after school was enough to unleash their fury. Bruises bloomed on her skin, hidden beneath long sleeves, each one a silent scream she never dared voice. Her demon biology healing the evidence well before others could notice.
School offered little sanctuary. The other children, sensing her fragility, circled like vultures. Mala, shaped by years of abuse into a shadow of a person, became little more than scenery in their world. An acceptable target for their taunts, their shoves, their laughter. She absorbed it all without protest, her silence a survival tactic honed at home. To fight back or draw attention, was to risk word reaching her parents. And their wrath was a storm no child’s cruelty could match. Yet the more Mala tried to vanish, to fade into the background of her own life, the more her very existence seemed to invite malice.
From her narrow bedroom window overlooking the sea, Mala's eyes would often trace the sunset. Its amber glow reached out to her like a loving mother's open arms.
“If there’s a better place for me, it must be far far away” she’d whisper to herself, her heart tethered to the horizon.
Graduation loomed like a distant key to freedom, her chance to flee this wretched place and never look back. All she needed was enough coin to carry her away.
