Through the polarized windows, ships drifted past like tired fireflies. Inside, the lighting pulsed between violet and deep blue, and the music - a blend of Earth jazz and synthetic alien tones - wrapped the patrons in a strange, dreamy haze.
Elias, his pilot helmet still clipped to his belt, sipped a glass of local liqueur while watching the figures come and go. He was working for a big trader company. He was the driver, the delivery guy, the guy taking things across the galaxy where he is told to leave them. He just finisehd a big one for a big client on Palaven, and now, he was off duty, waiting for another package to bring back.
He never really knew the Turians. He didn't hate them like some human extremist do, but he never like them either. Now that he think about it, he never interracted with them before. Only from far away or some clients to deliver, but that's it. Being so close to their home planet felt exotic, he was feeling really far away from home. He wasn’t the type to seek out company, but tonight, the scent of ozone and sugar in the air gave him a strange feeling… like something was about to change.
She approached without a sound.
She was tall, wearing a classical turian outfit.Two large greenish eyes watched him with amused curiosity. Across her face were purple stripes, crossing over her eyes, underlying their color.
- "May I sit?"
Her voice vibrated in the air, like a low, tender song.
Elias nodded, captivated.
- "Not every day a turian decides to talk to someone in a dive like this."
- "Not every day I see a human who doesn’t look away from my eyes," she replied with a soft smile.
Elias shivered. For a first contact, it was going pretty well. And what's better than having something to share to have a reason to talk.
- "May I buy you a drink ?"
Her eyes pierced through him.
- "Sure."
He ordered two glasses of what he was already drinking, for her and for him. They spoke for hours. Of their worlds, the loneliness of the star routes, the lovers lost in forgotten systems. He told her about his job, his travelling, the peace of being on your own in deep space, inside your little spaceship. She told him about her. Her name is Vetra Nyx, she is a mechanic. She has a little sister she's deeply protective about.
A few more drinks happened. Time flew. At some point, without realizing it, their hands had drawn close.
- "You know," she said as her fingers brushed his, "gravity feels strange here. Everything seems to slide gently toward you."
He chuckled, a little shy, but didn’t pull away.
- "Are you staying on the station tonight?"
She tilted her head, her eyes sparkling like stars.
- "Only if you are."
A tender silence wrapped around them.
He paid for their drinks, and she led him toward the exit, her hand in his, as if it were the most natural thing in the universe.
And in the pulsing light of the space-lit night, two hearts -galaxies apart just hours before- granted themselves the luxury of a moment of love.
