I'm sorta getting the feeling that a lot of first-contact stories are (uncomfortably) about the wish to "be in conflict with someone with whom you have zero baggage with", in lieu of the actual mess of context that is modern conflicts, in the here and now.

On the topic of humanity not being able to conquer pests, there's an interesting bit from Three Body Problem on that very subject. Humanity is aware that in 400 years a much more advanced alien fleet is going to invade and we are seemingly powerless to stop it. One character asks the question: is the technological gap between humanity and the trisolarins greater than the technological gap between humanity and locusts? The answer is clearly no. But humanity has yet to get rid of locusts.

It kinda sounds like he's doing cultural appropriation of bone cancer. Like, he *has it* - now - but he started off with prostate cancer. If this was still 2013 we could really have been in for a lot of struggle-discourse about how bone cancer is deeply rooted in the modern afro-american experience.

Joe Biden is gonna do for bone cancer what Magic Johnson did for AIDS.
