Compression of Values
🕑 Added 2022-09-06 00:44:23 +0000 UTCThe compression of values is taking the profound reality of what is going on in nature and depicting it in simple mixtures of paint. If we do this properly we can transcend beyond a "pretty picture" and capture something truthful to the human experience. This demo will give you some insight into working within the context of your pigments to create an illusion. Enjoy and please leave comments below, I will do my best to answer any of your questions. Or just start a thread and others may benefit from our conversation!

That’s excellent to hear! I’m really particular about palette work as you can tell, such an overlooked part of painting technique. It’s not a rule but helpful to know how it “ought” to function.

Hi Debra, yes typically it will be a gesso. Most often I use Utrecht gesso as of late, but for a long time I was using alkyd lead white ground from Rublev. It is amazing. I also shellac watercolor paper to paint on.
Hi Michael, I was wondering about what you used to prep/gesso/seal the veneer. Was it shellac or gesso or both? Thank you. Beautiful feeling in the painting with the compression of values.
Hey Michael, sure thing… You’ve given so much of yourself already but I’ll definitely have a think. I’m slightly biased, so forgive me…I’d love to see you work from outdoor oil or acrylic study to studio painting- much like your seascape you began, but taking this one all the way. Perhaps broken up into a series. Cheeky of me to ask 🙏🏻 By the ways…I’ve been studying your palette organisation - mixing, etc, and it’s completely revolutionised the way I work, so thank you so much! Will drop you a DM with my humble thoughts on potential topics 🙏🏻 Hope you well!
that was cool man! I'm painting this large landscape right now, and it was nice to be reminded about the poetry of the painting. Sometimes I want to flex all my technical abilities, but it really deadens that quality. I mean it gets me at least 10 likes though. lol!! I need to wear a bathing suit and make instagram reels now.

Thanks Nic, let me know some topics or ideas for videos. Would love to hear your thoughts!
Awesome explanation Michael! Super helpful, thank you!
haha!! I hear you. You'll be able to tell me that during critique haha

...such sophistication, I can't help myself! There is a lot of formidable representational art being done but there is a good portion of horrendous attempts as well.
I'm watching it currently, but wanted to laugh with the other members about that haha.
haha! "crummy representational painting"
