My Interview With Legend Padejseuk Pitsanurachan (English subs)
🕑 Added 2020-10-03 11:43:19 +0000 UTCAbove is a (public) interview with Silver/Golden Age Legend, Padejseuk, be sure to turn on English subtitles (the cc icon on YouTube). He's 64 years old and an incredible energy that mixes his sweetness, thoughtfulness, joy, and comes through his gleeful manner of speaking - but his body is made out of blades and anvils. Just touching his shins, his elbows, his forearms... the man is a weapon.
He was the 1979 Fighter of the Year, was one of only a few fighters to be awarded the Royal Cup. He beat Fighter of the Year Dieselnoi (talks about it), beat Fighter of the Year Posai, the legends Wichannoi, Kaopong and Sagat.
These interviews with old school Legends are precious to me, because these men are only being "discovered" by those of us who didn't grow up watching them, right as they are getting to an age where their stories and personalities will be disappearing. I actually wake up every single morning to photos of Padejseuk from magazines, receiving the King's Award (a huge honor), because he sends them to me on LINE (an app, if you're unfamiliar), because he was so pleased to able to tell his story. If all I'd ever seen were these photos, I'd know nothing of what this man was and is. But filming with him for the Muay Thai Library and feeling his rhythms and terrific sharpness, and then sitting and talking with him about his fights, his contemporaries, how he sees the changes in Muay Thai over the past 40 years, and what makes a great fighter - NONE of that comes through a photograph from a magazine. And ALL of that comes through in this interview. He's wonderful.
If you want to know what thrilled me about this interview check out the vlog I made right after working on the translation:
The full English transcript of my interview is at the bottom of this post:
Documentary/translation projects like these are made possible by my patrons. Patrons make this happen. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Be sure to also watch my session with Padejseuk in the Library, over an hour of him sharing is technique:
#92 Padejseuk Pitsanurachan - Old School Greatness (67 min) watch it here
It's special when we get to document one of the legends of the sport before the time of video. Padejseuk was an incredible fighter who beat Dieselnoi, Wichannoi, Potsai and Kaopong, the beasts of his day. Learn his all around philosophy and the tactics he used to beat some of the best who ever fought.
Some photos of Padejseuk in the prime of his career:
above, a very special moment for Padejseuk, when he received the Royal Cup from the Prince of Thailand.
Other interviews we've been able to do with legends, letting them speak:

0:01:29.244,0:01:31.359
- Hello
- Hello
0:01:31.570,0:01:39.556
There were not many people who could
defeat Wichannoi, Dieselnoi and Posai.
0:01:39.556,0:01:42.936
Can you comment about
your fights with them?
0:01:43.091,0:01:44.655
Fighting Dieselnoi...
0:01:44.655,0:01:48.498
I think... He is tall. right?
0:01:48.498,0:01:51.677
- yes very tall.
- I thought what I should do.
0:01:51.677,0:01:52.940
...in my mind...
0:01:53.545,0:01:56.011
People told me to just fight.
It wouldn't matter if I won or lost.
0:01:56.011,0:01:58.982
We were in the same class.
0:01:58.982,0:02:00.866
There was no way to avoid fighting. I had to fight.
0:02:02.586,0:02:05.702
First round. I tried elbow him.
0:02:07.324,0:02:12.938
Elbow. In Round 4,
he grabbed my neck and tried to knee me.
0:02:13.783,0:02:17.349
He tried to use his height and strength.
0:02:18.977,0:02:20.697
I realized I should elbow.
0:02:21.232,0:02:25.613
I elbowed him right around
the end of his eyebrow.
0:02:26.262,0:02:29.064
His eyebrow split open! That day...
0:02:30.244,0:02:31.308
Done! [the fight was stopped]
0:02:32.568,0:02:34.896
You saw his eyebrow...
0:02:34.896,0:02:38.151
- a lot of blood came out. I was happy.
- You knew right away you won, didn't you?
0:02:38.151,0:02:41.163
The doctor saw the wound.
0:02:41.163,0:02:44.392
and told the referee "cannot continue".
0:02:44.392,0:02:46.584
I was extremely happy.
0:02:48.375,0:02:52.683
My strategy was to counter his knee with my elbow.
I tried and it worked.
0:02:53.475,0:02:56.671
That was my fight with Dieselnoi.
0:02:56.671,0:03:00.050
- same thing with Posai.
- He is also tall, isn't he?
0:03:00.050,0:03:02.832
Posai also had long arms.
0:03:03.240,0:03:07.408
His style was knee.
His nickname was Telegraph Pole.
0:03:07.408,0:03:10.746
The match was at Lumpini.
Everyone said I would lose for sure.
0:03:11.414,0:03:15.734
They said I was too short. I wouldn't
be able to defeat his knee style.
0:03:16.778,0:03:18.815
I used both elbows and punches.
0:03:18.815,0:03:20.521
There was one particular punch.
0:03:21.435,0:03:25.063
I could defeat many opponents with punches.
0:03:25.063,0:03:29.910
My punch was sharp but not too strong.
0:03:30.165,0:03:34.115
So I punched hard,
0:03:34.115,0:03:36.850
accurate and it landed
0:03:37.503,0:03:38.762
right at his chin.
0:03:39.301,0:03:42.929
Posai was knocked out right in the corner
0:03:42.929,0:03:44.013
in Round 4.
0:03:45.332,0:03:48.660
I fought with Posai.
0:03:48.660,0:03:51.445
I fought with Wichannoi Pontawee.
0:03:52.555,0:03:54.811
Fought with Wichannoi Pontawee
0:03:55.343,0:04:00.218
and fought with other good fighters
0:04:00.218,0:04:02.256
like ...[inaudible name]
0:04:02.537,0:04:05.190
Muay Kang Thong
0:04:10.400,0:04:13.836
Muangsurin gym - the one with heavy punchers.
0:04:14.156,0:04:16.661
These fighters had heavy hands.
But I defeated them all.
0:04:16.661,0:04:18.868
Raktae Muangsurin, a strong fighter
0:04:18.868,0:04:20.484
People said he would knock me out.
0:04:21.103,0:04:24.080
I used my skills and vision to avoid him.
0:04:24.080,0:04:27.813
I beat Raktae Muangsurin,
0:04:27.813,0:04:31.250
another fighter, Sanchada.
0:04:31.677,0:04:33.682
These fighters won a lot by knock out.
0:04:34.378,0:04:39.174
They moved up to fight with me and hoped
to knock me out. But none of them could.
0:04:39.913,0:04:42.761
I could handle all
Muay Mat fighters.
0:04:43.426,0:04:44.710
You fought a lot with Muay Mat, right?
0:04:44.710,0:04:46.936
- yes. a lot.
- with Sagat also.
0:04:46.936,0:04:48.659
Sagat...his punches
0:04:48.659,0:04:52.525
could knock out so many people.
0:04:53.641,0:04:56.279
I always slipped when he punched.
0:04:56.279,0:05:01.105
He failed to punch me until he lost energy.
0:05:02.256,0:05:04.446
When I knew I would win,
I jabbed and teep a bit.
0:05:04.446,0:05:07.405
It was my skill and strategy, how I beat Sagat.
0:05:07.405,0:05:10.805
Ruangsak... I couldn't match him.
0:05:10.805,0:05:16.241
I got injured and hurt when I fought with Jocky.
0:05:16.561,0:05:19.852
His technique was knees.
His nickname was Horsepower Knee.
0:05:20.118,0:05:21.373
When he kneed, he didn't hit straight.
0:05:21.373,0:05:24.727
If he hit straight, it would be
ok because my stomach was strong.
0:05:25.233,0:05:26.804
- But he hit the ribs.
- Yes
0:05:27.989,0:05:30.965
Ribs are weaker.
0:05:30.965,0:05:33.768
It hurt so badly that I
couldn't get up in the morning.
0:05:34.170,0:05:38.268
It hurt for 3-4 days.
I had to apply medicines.
0:05:38.268,0:05:41.535
I fought him another time.
I didn't learn the lesson.
0:05:41.781,0:05:43.583
I was defeated again.
0:05:43.971,0:05:49.681
That's ok. I was his junior. He was my senior.
It was all for experience.
0:05:49.681,0:05:53.431
I trained hard again and again.
And fought with different fighters.
0:05:53.431,0:05:56.376
I defeated many good fighters.
0:05:56.376,0:05:58.940
I defeated Geng Gat Giatgrianggrai,
0:05:58.940,0:06:00.337
Geng Gla Sitsaey.
0:06:00.337,0:06:05.328
These two brothers tried to beat me
but they couldn't. I defeated them both.
0:06:08.107,0:06:10.491
Sayunnoi, Kitti Muanggaen.
0:06:12.968,0:06:16.120
I kicked Sayunnoi hard before.
0:06:17.179,0:06:21.508
Many good fighters tried to
beat me but they couldn't.
0:06:22.029,0:06:26.600
I fought with Narongnoi
Kiatbandit, Sua Yim Yak.
0:06:27.740,0:06:31.502
He was good at both kicking and punching.
0:06:31.502,0:06:32.794
he fought beautifully
0:06:33.533,0:06:38.915
King Rama X went to watch
our match at that time.
0:06:38.915,0:06:42.516
I was very proud.
0:06:42.901,0:06:44.652
I defeated Narongnoi.
0:06:45.253,0:06:48.599
There were so many in the audience that day.
0:06:48.838,0:06:49.974
a lot of witnesses
0:06:49.974,0:06:51.955
all the newspapers
0:06:51.955,0:06:54.321
lots of gamblers
0:06:54.321,0:06:59.514
They all agreed that I
was "Royal Cup Fighter" [this is a huge honor]
0:07:00.133,0:07:07.021
All authorities agreed that I
should be "Royal Cup Fighter"
0:07:07.021,0:07:12.890
receiving the Cup from King Rama X.
0:07:12.890,0:07:14.754
This Cup was from King Rama IX.
0:07:15.585,0:07:18.594
from King Rama IX
0:07:18.594,0:07:23.074
but it was given by King Rama X.
0:07:23.074,0:07:26.091
I received the Cup from King Rama X [the Prince at that time]
0:07:26.668,0:07:29.994
I have been called "Royal
Cup Fighter" to this day.
0:07:30.313,0:07:31.989
Today I am
0:07:31.989,0:07:36.461
a teacher at the Police Cadet school
0:07:36.461,0:07:38.608
at Salaya.
0:07:38.608,0:07:43.479
I teach there regularly.
I have been teaching there for 5 years now.
0:07:43.479,0:07:48.073
I teach students who will
become police officers.
0:07:49.545,0:07:51.231
I teach Physical Education
from morning to the evening.
0:07:52.567,0:07:56.606
I also teach other places
wherever there is a request.
0:07:56.606,0:07:59.193
I show people techniques and strategies.
0:07:59.823,0:08:02.569
I don't require much.
0:08:03.167,0:08:04.714
I want to show Thai boxing.
0:08:04.714,0:08:08.553
I want to show Thai boxing to foreigners too.
0:08:08.553,0:08:14.251
I always show boxing strategies
to anyone who wants to learn.
0:08:14.522,0:08:16.988
- I don't know how long I will live.
- Yes
0:08:16.988,0:08:20.031
I want my students to continue Thai boxing.
0:08:20.031,0:08:22.210
Like you Sylvie
0:08:22.613,0:08:25.604
Remember things I taught you.
After that you go to teach other people.
0:08:25.604,0:08:30.897
Boxing will stay with
our country and the world.
0:08:30.897,0:08:32.340
"Muay Thai" is
0:08:35.121,0:08:39.048
a skill to attack other people
and also protect yourself.
0:08:39.048,0:08:41.931
It's not only for you to earn money.
0:08:41.931,0:08:43.163
You can protect yourself.
0:08:43.163,0:08:45.159
When somebody wants to attack you,
0:08:45.159,0:08:51.005
you can use Muay Thai
techniques to fight back.
0:08:51.352,0:08:52.767
We know how to punch.
0:08:54.419,0:08:58.390
If a drug addict wants to attack you,
0:08:58.390,0:09:00.238
you can teep.
0:09:00.921,0:09:05.029
You said earlier when you fought
and you knew you were winning,
0:09:05.029,0:09:07.333
you would just defend.
0:09:07.333,0:09:09.659
It was different in the past.
0:09:09.659,0:09:11.147
It was different in the past.
0:09:11.147,0:09:15.643
[when] I knew I would win around Round 4 and 5.
0:09:15.643,0:09:17.055
I didn't go far from the opponent.
0:09:17.055,0:09:20.372
I didn't dance around the ring.
0:09:20.372,0:09:25.855
I didn't act crazy to make
myself look bad to the audience.
0:09:26.488,0:09:28.805
I stayed close to the opponent.
Throw some teeps.
0:09:29.417,0:09:31.569
Some kicks.
0:09:31.569,0:09:34.740
But I wouldn't punch hard.
I just showed my skill.
0:09:35.409,0:09:40.499
I showed Thai boxing techniques
to entertain the audience instead.
0:09:40.940,0:09:42.393
I jabbed and teeped.
0:09:43.211,0:09:48.043
- Nowadays no weapons in Round 1 or 2.
- Not at all.
0:09:48.043,0:09:49.380
How about the past?
0:09:49.380,0:09:51.337
We started at the bell of Round 1.
0:09:52.824,0:09:54.103
the full 5 rounds
0:09:54.103,0:09:56.561
I used to fight full 5 rounds.
0:09:57.061,0:10:00.881
Except when fighting with great fighters.
0:10:01.712,0:10:04.954
When 2 great fighters
fight, we normally feel each other out
0:10:04.979,0:10:07.800
at the beginning.
We strike but not hard.
0:10:07.800,0:10:11.907
It was different with Muay Mat [punchers].
They always punch hard.
0:10:11.907,0:10:16.064
I didn't run away.
I tried to fight back.
0:10:16.064,0:10:19.842
avoid, jab and teep
0:10:19.842,0:10:21.455
I didn't run away.
0:10:21.534,0:10:25.357
I tried to avoid punches but stayed close. I never ran away from the opponent.
0:10:25.357,0:10:31.067
In the past, what was the important
thing in scoring? And how about today?
0:10:31.067,0:10:32.466
- scoring?
- Yes
0:10:34.037,0:10:36.639
- Referees are different.
- Yeah different
0:10:36.639,0:10:39.068
What does it mean "Referees are different?
0:10:39.867,0:10:42.833
In the past, referee used his own
judgement. He didn't listen to gamblers.
0:10:43.070,0:10:46.180
He didn't care if fighters
were from big or small gyms.
0:10:46.180,0:10:48.639
"Big or small gyms" means
0:10:48.639,0:10:54.361
referees weren't influenced by what name or gym the gamblers liked.
0:10:57.124,0:11:01.970
I watch fights today.
I looked at small and big gyms.
0:11:02.290,0:11:05.563
If the score is close between a fighter from a small gym and a fighter from a big gym
0:11:05.563,0:11:07.282
they won't give it to the small gym.
0:11:08.393,0:11:09.611
he can't win if it's close
0:11:09.611,0:11:12.738
it can be almost a draw.
0:11:12.738,0:11:15.468
If the fighter from small
gym falls or is kicked even one time
0:11:15.493,0:11:17.808
and falls,
the fighter from big gym will win.
0:11:17.808,0:11:18.988
Referee will give to
fighter from big gym.
0:11:18.988,0:11:19.869
Not fun. right?
0:11:19.869,0:11:24.520
I don't know if there is any
benefit behind the scene.
0:11:24.520,0:11:26.798
I don't want to talk about that.
0:11:26.798,0:11:30.268
I will just say about big and small gyms.
That's it.
0:11:31.190,0:11:33.728
Between small gyms and big gyms,
they will listen to big gyms more.
0:11:34.816,0:11:38.857
A fighter from a small gym might be good.
But if it is not a going-away victory,
0:11:38.857,0:11:41.881
it won't be easy to defeat
a fighter from a big gym.
0:11:42.295,0:11:45.265
In the past,
if you defeat the opponent, you win.
0:11:45.265,0:11:46.361
If you lose, you lose.
0:11:46.361,0:11:49.034
Do you still like to watch Thai boxing?
0:11:49.034,0:11:51.086
Yes I do.
0:11:51.393,0:11:55.169
I still like watching but not so much
that I have to go to watch at the stadium.
0:11:55.169,0:11:58.371
I won't be glued to the
TV to watch the match.
0:11:58.371,0:11:59.900
I will only look for
0:12:00.418,0:12:04.397
a fighter I can use as example
0:12:04.397,0:12:09.659
to train other fighters.
0:12:09.659,0:12:12.191
If it is a fight with no
strategy, I won't watch.
0:12:12.861,0:12:14.916
If it's a fight with no
tactics, I won't watch.
0:12:14.916,0:12:17.816
If it is a match of a decent fighter,
0:12:17.816,0:12:19.074
I will check it out.
0:12:19.074,0:12:22.133
I might find something I
can use to show my students.
0:12:23.497,0:12:25.590
I've seen several good fighters.
0:12:25.590,0:12:28.273
There are also a lot of bad fighters.
0:12:29.310,0:12:31.386
I want contemporary fighting to improve
0:12:31.386,0:12:38.240
to be similar to fighting in the past.
0:12:38.240,0:12:41.022
I want aggressive fights
0:12:41.022,0:12:43.470
where fighters are not
afraid of pain or injury
0:12:43.470,0:12:45.400
Today they look like
they don't want to die.
0:12:45.400,0:12:47.382
They are also afraid to lose.
0:12:48.100,0:12:50.644
They are afraid they lose the
match and lose money.
0:12:50.644,0:12:52.722
Betting dominates the fights.
0:12:52.722,0:12:55.783
And fights become not fun and uninteresting.
0:12:55.783,0:12:57.566
But we can't say much.
0:12:57.566,0:13:02.563
In the past, I didn't care about winning or
losing. I only wanted to fight hard.
0:13:03.278,0:13:06.113
If the referee didn't separate us,
we wouldn't stop fighting.
0:13:06.949,0:13:09.671
But fighters these days
only watch the time [clock].
0:13:09.671,0:13:12.298
In the past,
the referee's job was to "stop" the fight.
0:13:13.137,0:13:16.415
His job was to stop [protect in] aggressive fights.
0:13:16.415,0:13:17.468
But these days, a referee
0:13:17.998,0:13:19.648
has to bring them together to fight.
0:13:19.648,0:13:21.380
- He doesn't "stop" them.
- In the past, the referee didn't break a lot.
0:13:22.223,0:13:24.766
A referee has to bring
fighters in the middle to fight.
0:13:24.766,0:13:28.287
He has to bring them together few times.
And fighters still don't fight.
0:13:28.938,0:13:33.904
"Stopping" the fight is too easy.
0:13:33.904,0:13:35.784
He has to bring fighters
together to fight.
0:13:35.784,0:13:37.017
bring them to fight
0:13:37.301,0:13:40.993
These days referee doesn't
"break" the fight anymore.
0:13:40.993,0:13:43.848
Did you have a chance to fight abroad?
0:13:45.122,0:13:47.457
I participated in an
Amateur Boxing program.
0:13:47.457,0:13:50.240
- Where?
- Indonesia
0:13:50.240,0:13:51.353
Did you like it?
0:13:51.851,0:13:53.202
Did you like amateur
boxing?
0:13:53.202,0:13:54.819
I liked it.
I was part of the National Team.
0:13:54.819,0:13:58.924
We were asked to be on the National Team.
0:13:59.556,0:14:00.900
It was the Army's team.
0:14:00.900,0:14:03.737
It was during my peak when I was popular,
and didn't have any competitors.
0:14:04.435,0:14:06.803
So I was brought to that team.
0:14:06.803,0:14:07.833
How many years were you in the team?
0:14:07.863,0:14:14.807
I got gold medal...oh...
no, no silver medal.
0:14:14.807,0:14:16.541
Yes I got silver.
0:14:16.937,0:14:18.315
It was the President Cup.
0:14:18.892,0:14:20.673
President Cup
0:14:20.673,0:14:24.322
I used to be a trainer and went to Japan.
0:14:24.891,0:14:30.885
a coach of the Tokyo Cup.
0:14:31.960,0:14:34.437
I was a coach.
0:14:35.261,0:14:40.028
But I went to Indonesia to fight.
0:14:40.651,0:14:43.959
I fought in an Amateur Boxing
Program for Army team in Indonesia.
0:14:43.959,0:14:45.139
Army team
0:14:45.659,0:14:50.916
We fought for gold but I lost.
0:14:50.916,0:14:53.448
The weight you fought
in International boxing
0:14:53.473,0:14:55.867
was the same as that in Thai boxing.
right?
0:14:55.867,0:14:59.287
I went into Western Boxing because I was champion already at Rajadamnern.
0:15:00.056,0:15:03.843
It was the time nobody could
fight me in Muay Thai.
0:15:03.843,0:15:07.304
It was my peak time.
0:15:07.304,0:15:09.843
Nobody could fight me at that time.
0:15:10.387,0:15:13.660
My boss moved me to Western
Boxing for the World Championships.
0:15:13.660,0:15:14.842
In the past,
0:15:15.246,0:15:18.587
there were not many sponsors.
My boss didn't have much money.
0:15:18.587,0:15:23.746
He couldn't entice a World Champion with
10 or 20 million to come to fight me.
0:15:24.346,0:15:26.679
So I just trained.
0:15:27.212,0:15:30.698
Kru Chana Tupkaew was my trainer.
0:15:30.698,0:15:34.526
I trained with Kaosai [Galaxy]. He was not
World Champion yet.
0:15:34.526,0:15:36.758
We trained together.
0:15:37.332,0:15:41.482
I trained Western Boxing for a while.
Then I moved back to Muay Thai.
0:15:45.523,0:15:47.802
I trained for a while
0:15:48.903,0:15:52.425
without any opportunity to
fight for a World Championship title.
0:15:52.425,0:15:53.875
I got lazy, so I gave up.
0:15:54.593,0:15:57.225
I moved back to Muay Thai.
0:15:57.225,0:16:00.864
I had 4-5 matches and then retired.
0:16:00.864,0:16:02.216
I had no opponents.
0:16:02.216,0:16:04.578
I fought with everyone in my weight class.
0:16:04.578,0:16:08.247
I lost 10-15 lbs every time I fought. I was tired of it.
0:16:08.715,0:16:09.996
I fought...
0:16:10.946,0:16:13.783
Inseenoi Sor. Tanikul, the Likay performer [traditional Thai stage show]
0:16:13.783,0:16:16.523
That was the last person I fought.
I told my boss in advance.
0:16:16.523,0:16:21.629
I already lost 16 lbs.
I would quit no matter if I win or lose.
0:16:22.041,0:16:25.466
No matter if I win or lose, I would retire.
0:16:26.163,0:16:29.617
Last fight was with Inseenoi and I lost
0:16:30.248,0:16:32.301
I retired because of my weight.
0:16:32.301,0:16:35.569
I had to lose weight so
much that I got tired.
0:16:36.144,0:16:39.297
I had to lose 15-16 lbs. In the morning,
0:16:39.297,0:16:42.791
I had to run from the gym to the stadium.
0:16:42.791,0:16:45.766
I had to run a lot.
0:16:46.329,0:16:47.395
I was very worn out.
0:16:47.395,0:16:50.792
Because I was getting
older and gaining weight.
0:16:50.792,0:16:52.789
I had to fight with younger fighters.
0:16:52.789,0:16:55.649
Other fighters in my
same class had already retired.
0:16:55.962,0:16:58.671
So I decided to retire, too.
0:16:59.450,0:17:02.067
I opened a shop.
0:17:02.067,0:17:07.357
And became a trainer
and a Muay Thai instructor.
0:17:08.697,0:17:13.197
I am teaching at Police Cadet School.
0:17:14.300,0:17:19.583
I don't make much money.
But I am proud to be a teacher.
0:17:19.583,0:17:22.400
You know? Like you've come to me
0:17:23.092,0:17:25.692
and asked for techniques and tactics.
0:17:25.692,0:17:26.781
Anyone
0:17:26.781,0:17:27.988
I will give to anyone.
0:17:27.988,0:17:34.116
Just tell me that you want, techniques and strategies.
0:17:34.116,0:17:35.465
I am always willing to share.
0:17:36.030,0:17:37.538
I will teach and share
0:17:37.538,0:17:38.689
as much as I can.
0:17:39.705,0:17:45.696
At this time, Thai youth have become less interested in Muay Thai.
0:17:46.007,0:17:52.554
What would you say to the youth of Thailand to make them interested in learning Muay Thai?
0:17:52.554,0:17:55.490
I would like all children to train hard
0:17:55.490,0:18:01.814
and to learn all the Muay Thai techniques and
strategies from the older generation.
0:18:01.814,0:18:03.327
Learn all of them.
0:18:03.327,0:18:04.651
Not
0:18:05.329,0:18:08.361
only use knee. You will lose.
0:18:08.905,0:18:13.084
Learn everything!
0:18:13.422,0:18:16.058
elbows, knees, teeps, punches, kicks
0:18:16.694,0:18:18.161
like I showed today
0:18:18.588,0:18:19.987
I want them to know everything.
0:18:19.987,0:18:23.463
If you can't kick the
opponent, use punches
0:18:24.101,0:18:25.448
or elbow or knee.
0:18:25.448,0:18:29.015
Don't wait to kick only.
0:18:29.015,0:18:31.647
If the opponent can avoid or guard,
you won't be able to kick. You will lose.
0:18:31.647,0:18:33.431
If you can't grab neck and knee,
0:18:33.431,0:18:34.431
you will lose.
0:18:34.625,0:18:36.241
If you can't grab, kick instead.
0:18:36.241,0:18:38.045
teep or punch first
0:18:39.816,0:18:44.471
Don't just wait to punch.
If you can't punch, you will lose.
0:18:44.471,0:18:45.616
- yes
- That's it.
0:18:45.616,0:18:48.762
I want all students from every gym
0:18:49.425,0:18:53.326
learn all types of weapons
and strategies like
0:18:53.326,0:18:56.004
punches, knees, teeps, elbows. Use all of them.
0:18:56.004,0:18:58.117
Train with the bag.
0:18:58.117,0:19:00.168
kicks and elbows
0:19:00.168,0:19:01.922
grab and knee
0:19:02.563,0:19:04.389
Don't stand there and wait to punch only.
0:19:04.389,0:19:08.196
If you can't punch, you will lose.
That is embarrasing.
0:19:08.196,0:19:12.858
I want all students who learn Muay Thai
0:19:13.507,0:19:18.009
learn all types of techniques.
0:19:18.009,0:19:22.146
elbow, knee, foot, punch, kick, teep.
Make all of them your weapons.
0:19:22.146,0:19:24.061
Train to be good at all of them.
0:19:24.061,0:19:26.557
Be ready to defeat your opponents,
0:19:26.557,0:19:29.471
both locals and foreigners.
0:19:29.471,0:19:31.898
Show them how to kick the neck.
0:19:33.013,0:19:34.689
Show them.
0:19:35.272,0:19:37.153
Don't let them kick your neck.
0:19:37.153,0:19:41.396
Because that is our technique, we have
to kick their neck. Not the other way.
0:19:41.749,0:19:44.257
kick them. elbow them.
0:19:44.257,0:19:47.973
Don't just wait and let them kick you.
0:19:47.973,0:19:52.705
Good fighters train hard.
That's why they are good.
0:19:52.705,0:19:55.473
When foreigners come to learn
Muay Thai, they train hard.
0:19:55.473,0:19:58.195
If Thai people train as hard as
them, all of us will be good.
0:19:58.195,0:20:00.402
right? I think
0:20:00.402,0:20:03.573
most of them are better
when they are pushed.
0:20:03.573,0:20:05.559
They are not working hard.
0:20:06.372,0:20:13.339
They go to fight.
There are punched and hit by foreigners.
0:20:13.669,0:20:16.972
I don't want to blame anyone.
They just have to train diligently.
0:20:17.549,0:20:21.944
Most people lose because
they don't train hard.
0:20:22.752,0:20:26.321
No energy.
0:20:26.321,0:20:30.969
They are like...I just want to fight and get money. I don't care about training. It's not right.
0:20:32.153,0:20:34.719
In my generation,
0:20:35.121,0:20:36.598
we didn't care about money.
0:20:36.598,0:20:38.559
Money will follow.
0:20:40.049,0:20:42.554
If there would be a fight
0:20:42.876,0:20:46.264
for whatever weight class,
we would train hard.
0:20:46.264,0:20:48.478
I was good because I worked hard.
0:20:48.478,0:20:51.477
I trained the hardest in the gym.
0:20:52.005,0:20:57.286
I didn't do other bad things.
0:20:57.286,0:21:00.641
When there would be a fight,
I would train and exercise only.
0:21:00.641,0:21:02.788
I trained hard.
I woke up and went out running.
0:21:02.788,0:21:04.978
I followed the weight limit.
0:21:04.978,0:21:08.359
I followed the training plan.
0:21:08.359,0:21:11.184
I did everything my trainer asked me to do.
0:21:11.184,0:21:12.945
I never said no.
0:21:12.945,0:21:14.146
That's why I was good.
0:21:14.146,0:21:17.031
That's how I became good.
I didn't lose energy.
0:21:17.031,0:21:19.662
My body was strong.
If I was kicked, I didn't get hurt.
0:21:20.478,0:21:22.163
You can be good.
0:21:22.163,0:21:26.733
In the past,
I never got any bruising or swelling.
0:21:27.436,0:21:30.427
Even today, touch it. I still have...
0:21:33.383,0:21:36.762
This is the strength I have been
training for almost my whole life.
0:21:36.762,0:21:39.126
It's really good.
0:21:39.126,0:21:40.915
I am 64 years old.
0:21:40.915,0:21:42.189
I am not 25 anymore.
0:21:43.980,0:21:45.720
I can still kick the neck.
0:21:46.374,0:21:52.110
A 50-60 years old person, who was not
a fighter, can't even lift their legs.
0:21:52.110,0:21:55.328
They can't if they never trained
like me or were not an athlete.
0:21:55.696,0:21:58.234
I can kick the neck. I show to people.
0:21:58.234,0:22:00.932
I teach the police cadet.
I kicked them everyday.
0:22:00.932,0:22:04.745
I kicked my students everyday.
I kick to discipline them. ok?
0:22:05.735,0:22:11.411
In your day, you were skilled with elbows, you cut many yodmuay.
0:22:11.411,0:22:16.279
In the past, did people think Muay Sok was good?
0:22:16.279,0:22:23.178
Today elbow technique is popular.
But in the past it wasn't given high esteem, was it?
0:22:23.178,0:22:26.657
Were you proud of your elbow skill?
0:22:26.657,0:22:30.237
Nobody taught me elbow techniques.
0:22:30.237,0:22:33.267
But I thought we should use this.
0:22:33.545,0:22:34.802
- You learned it on your own?
- Yes
0:22:35.417,0:22:37.894
I tried and it worked.
0:22:40.707,0:22:42.988
Some people they got injured.
0:22:44.136,0:22:46.035
The skin broke but not too bad.
0:22:46.035,0:22:47.745
But they were scared.
0:22:47.745,0:22:52.421
Their confidence went from 100 to 80.
0:22:53.062,0:22:56.375
They saw a lot of blood
and thought they would die.
0:22:57.163,0:22:58.966
It boosted me.
0:22:58.966,0:23:03.613
That helped reduce the
opponent ability by 20%.
0:23:03.613,0:23:06.641
- The audience liked it, right?
- Yes!
0:23:06.641,0:23:10.162
Audiences were excited.
They were like "oh...blood".
0:23:10.764,0:23:12.860
A lot of blood!
0:23:13.475,0:23:17.357
They would say that it was an
agressive fight with a lot of blood.
0:23:17.709,0:23:23.178
Elbow is very sharp.
0:23:23.178,0:23:25.082
Very sharp
0:23:27.914,0:23:29.332
Very sharp
0:23:31.099,0:23:33.780
-Thank you very much.
- Yes Thank you.

Amazing... such an important responsibility you guys have.. thankyou 🙏🏼 Great interview !
Sylvie von Duuglas-Ittu
There are a few Legends who have biographies, Hippy, Pudpadnoi, and Samart that I know of. But none in English. Dieselnoi has a manuscript we're trying to help him with. What we're doing with the Muay Thai Library and these interviews is the kind of documentary work that simply isn't there.
Hi Sylvie. Do you know of any books or videos etc that goes into the young lives of these fighters? I'm curious to know what their childhood and families were like prior to becoming a star. Thanks for everything, I've learned so much. Jersey in the house!
