As a preservationist (and Muay Thai practitioner) I find that analyses like this provide something which is missing from most projects that seek to preserve intangible heritage or cultural practices. Your focus on the subject matter as a living (if at times fading) grammar that can be made viable to present practice through documentation is refreshing. Most similar projects simply seek to record, protect, and interpret in stasis. Maybe it’s just because the information is so useful, but either way the depth is appreciated.

The B

"Much of fighting is placing oneself in spatial zones one feels akin to while depriving one’s opponent the same." This is an excellent distillation of what I feel is the main point of martial arts. Fundamentally, we are objects in space getting closer to, or farther from each other. If I am more comfortable that you are in our shared space, I am dominant. Every tool and technique I have is devoted to this. This is also where martial arts expands into the wider world. If I can make you uncomfortable with my spacing, I can also make you *more* comfortable with my spacing. I can give you respect by listening to what is comfortable, i.e. in what space you become more yourself, and by helping you achieve that I can raise you up without diminishing myself.
