About the offer of 400 rubles: The annual salary for a skilled technical worker (not an unskilled laborer) in the USSR was 800-1600 rubles/year, depending on seniority, so a 400 ruble bonus would be equal to 3-6 months pay, depending on seniority. After rampant inflation in post-Soviet Russia, Belorussia, and Ukraine in the 1990's and 2000's, today (2025) the annual stipend of 400 rubles is worth less than US $12.
