THERE IS A DEMO ON STEAM
🕑 Added 2020-06-16 17:38:55 +0000 UTCThis will function as the general June progress update. We're a little early, but wanted to make sure everyone saw the Steam event! You can go download a demo of it RIGHT NOW: https://store.steampowered.com/app/971030/SkateBIRD/
It's up as part of Steam's Summer of Games festival thingy, so the demo will be up for about a week. You've got time. Try it out, have fun!
Game Progress
One big change (that you'll see in the demo) is we've spread the playable area out a lot, and we've actually added collisions (albeit crappy lazy ones still) to the entire map. There isn't anything to find there yet, but it's a definite "yet" - there will be. This is because we've realized that fewer larger maps, with more space, feels a lot more fun than more smaller maps. I had this thing where, at the behest of Xalavier (THANK YOU XALAVIER), I iterated and just half-again'ed the distances between everything, and suddenly I was having more fun, other players were reporting they weren't constantly bailing anymore, and it just... gelled. Then when you expand it like that, it's like, well, why NOT let you skate around on the floor? Everyone had fun doing that, so sure. If we're not trying to pepper everything with maximum density skate objects, it gets a lot easier to fill more space, and then that's just fun, you know?
Normally this is where I'd link a bunch of tweets, but with the demo sitting there, I don't want to overload you with media. Go try it yourself, or watch your favorite streamers who may pick it up - it'll be a lot fresher than GIFs. In terms of major recent work, what you're looking at is:
- The bird now ping-pongs instead of ragdolling. It cute. Try screm'ing when bailed :3
- The park itself got half again as big
- All the areas of the park are now linked with grind paths
- Where possible, I've added multiple transits between park zones, to allow for more lines
- The entire room now has collisions (albeit crappy temporary ones) for maximum goofing around
... and probably other stuff I'm forgetting, but yeah! Point is, demo's live, go have fun, and we'll do another update next month after the dust has settled!
