Thank you for your reply. I think it’s very interesting but also very reasonable. Your story isn’t glorifying war, for sure.

I did find myself reflecting yesterday on similarities between the story and what's going on in Ukraine currently. In particular, the scene where they're discussing updates from Imes felt particularly relevant to me, since it's the same feeling of distant helplessness that I think a lot of us feel right now as we listen to updates from Europe. I don't plan on making any particular changes to PS in response to current events, however. Prior to this, it was still a story that focused heavily on the futility of war, and on the widespread harm it does to everyone involved. I imagine that if I had written a different story about a young man going to win glory on a battlefield, I might feel compelled to temper any exuberant depictions of battle that I had planned. In this case, however, I think I've said precisely what I want to say about war. I can't promise that my upcoming writing won't be influenced by events in Ukraine, because it undoubtedly will be the next time PS turns to scenes of battle - but that influence will likely only be felt in additional emphasis on the themes you've already seen in the story.

I think I suspected that the fear of his hands was more than just his new anatomens ability just prior to their jump from the train, but not before. In hindsight I can see all the clues however that were there in their mountain travels. Also, following the horrible real world events in europe, I found myself reading the Times’ letters to the editor today and noting how similar in some regards they feel to the letters which you use in this story. With the effort that you put into the propaganda for these chapters, but the now real European war that we are experiencing are you going to need to change your approach at all, do you think, for either your own sensibilities or for the changed environment into which you will be releasing them? It may be no pickle at all for you or a very big pickle indeed, and I’m curious as to what you must be thinking?

I think it was kind of an open secret for the readers that Luc had the hand, haha - dude shows up on the continent and conveniently is afraid to show everyone his hands, very suspicious. I really enjoy writing him as a character because he's got a very different moral center than the Daressan crowd, and probably ends up being one of the most consequence-focused characters aside from Leire, which is saying something. I think this arc will give him more of a chance to develop as a character and clarify his path moving forward, you'll definitely be seeing more of him than in the prior arcs.

It’s nice to have that tension between he and Sobriquet find a way out. I thought he would never realise/she would never act. I figured out re: Luc’s hand a while back, with the Safid text re: the heart stealer, and Luc’s gaining the anatomens soul, my wondering is, will Luc remain with Leire and take the Star allowing Michael to head out on his adventures again? And if so, will Luc become the villain he fears a soul like his and Michael’s can make, or will he rise above it. I’d hope for two heroes. But I fear we’ll only get one in this story, by it’s tone and themes so far.

Thank you for reading! Mike's obliviousness is partly that Spark only lets him sense feelings, but the interpretation of those feelings is something he must do. It's the same dynamic as he was describing to Luc, where souls rely on the human mind for interpretation of human things. In Mike's case, being intensely loved is not something he's overly familiar with. I like Luc and Mike's interactions just because Luc is very much where Mike was at many chapters ago, bereft of the various positive influences that kept Mike moving forward. As he notes, all he has is Mike - which is something Mike is growing to appreciate the significance of, as he tries to accept the idea that people out there may be "waiting for him."

Another lovely chapter! Very interesting to see that Luc has Michael's hand grafted on; it certainly adds a different dimension to his desire not to have Michael accept Star (Stellar?), and I certainly can't fault him for worrying about the consequences farther down the line. Meanwhile, it was very nice to witness a culmination, of sorts, to Michael's learning. Whereas for most of the story Michael was the recipient of the wisdom of others, and his goal was simply to sort out which felt true to him, now Michael becomes the dispenser of wisdom, to rather remarkable effect. While he doesn't pretend to have all the answers, the one's he did have were enough to help settle Luc and give some reassurance to Sera, despite the fact that he himself is still clearly struggling to put everything together. In other, equally exciting news, go Sera! I really do think the two are good for each other, with Michael's gentleness and moral conscientiousness making a neat complement for Sera's more pragmatic and grounded approach to things, entirely leaving aside the fact that the two of them seem to rather like each other. "I am better for having met you" indeed. The last bit of the chapter was a piece of unexpected hilarity, where I was torn between laughing at Michael for being so oblivious despite having Spark and ruefully acknowledging that, were I in his position, I would have been at least as confused. I'd say I'm hoping for only good things for them, but knowing the story so far, I'll settle for a happy ending. As always, thank you for the chapter.

He does talk about how he's got a sensation from the hand that leads him to that conclusion. The topic merits some further discussion, which we'll have later on when Mike's not otherwise... occupied. Leire will also have some thoughts on the matter, given its importance to her plan for Mike.

Blah64

I don't understand why the soul would go to luc because of an arm transplant. Or how he knows that.

TMarkos

They've got to catch a break sometime!

TMarkos

Yeah, I fixed it. I was lamenting on the discord that Sera is really confusing for me as an author because she's got two hands when in migraine mode - and she's got half an arm left, so she can still raise it and such. No hand regrowth here.

just_a_potato

"She smiled apologetically, holding her hands up." Thinking this is a typo unless Sera got her other hand back and I didn't notice.

Awwww
