Thank you! I hadn't really decided on the tone of the conversation until I was basically in the process of writing it, but in retrospect I don't really see how it could have gone any other way.

Oh wow! I loved this chapter, super exciting to finally meet Star. The conversation was intense ^^

TMarkos

Thank you! I feel like intense dialog of that sort is a really good way to show how a character feels about an issue without resorting to expository writing. This snippet was doing a lot of heavy lifting in that regard!

Fantastic chapter. I feel like the intensity of the adversarial dialog is a bit of a hallmark of your writing, and I quite enjoy it. Well done.

I'm trying to use the paper to keep events elsewhere in the world in play - so while Mike was in Ardalt it talked about Mendian and the continent, when Mike was in Daressa it talked about Ardalt and Mendian, and now that Mike's in Mendian it'll focus more on Ardalt and Daressa. It's a nice way to respect Mike's PoV in the story while still giving the readers info they wouldn't realistically see from that PoV.

Saddy Storm

I’m guessing that the War Committee won’t be listening much to the Songbird, might even shut down people writing articles even remotely critical of them, even ones that actively are on their side and want them to succeed. Simultaneously tragic and cathartic seeing them choose their downfall— nothing’s set in stone actually, maybe the upper echelon begrudgingly sees the value of criticism. But basically love the world-building hope something comes of little tidbits like these, maybe not always since it’d be a pain in the ass to keep track of all of them but you know, at least the really interesting or really normal ones should be used for continuity and/or surprises.

Thanks for the chapter.

There's a lot going on with that test, if you consider the relationship between Leire, Jeorg and Michael. Coming in as Jeorg's protege did Mike very few favors considering who Jeorg's last protege was. Leire is kind of a taxing character to write because her conversation is never only about the conversation, it's about the implications of what they're doing in the moment.

Ah the cub shows his teeth, but is he a lion yet? I love the intensity of Micheal’s disgust at Leire’a proposal and his recognition that he now is something to be feared. Its going to be a pleasure watching him grapple with this fact. Will he become a hermit and try to save the world from his soul? Will he try to lift others up? Will he try to stop the war, with the inevitable harvest of souls that follows?

TMarkos

I think Mike's aware that (per his earlier conversation with Sobriquet) it's kind of inevitable that he will get more souls. His reaction to Leire's proposal is more about the concept of deliberately acquiring souls, which he finds abhorrent.

tbh I found this chapter kind of disappointing. It feels weird for Micheal to say that he will never take another soul when it has been shown again and again that he will absorb more and can't do anything about it unless he intends to become a hermit isolated from other ensouled. I also feel like the last lines of Stellar are overly dramatic considering that Micheal may be lying, Stellar could still have him killed and too many things are still uncertain. Maybe I am in the minority here, just my opinion.

Thank you! I feel like I'm saying this every other chapter these days but this was a very intimidating chapter to write because Leire was such a presence in the book prior to her introduction. It was strange and fun to actually give her dialog and figure out how she interacted with characters.

That final line from Leire - incredible writing as always.
