We'll have to see! Like Sera said a few chapters ago, it's unlikely that he's going to get through this without accruing a few more souls. The question is who, and how...

Funguslord

Starting to look like micheal is destined to get all of the 8. He has 2 soon to be 3 and he has affinity with both Sybil and sever. Both will hunt him and likely die. Smoke and the book he gave micheal (plus the comment sustain made about smoke and his book) lead me to believe that smoke will also have affinity with micheal and i cant imagine a world where micheal doesnt fight saf. If micheal does kill or fight smoke the battle maniac that is sustain will obsess over have a real test and all that so i can see affinity from sustain too eventaully tho. And sera likes micheal (and i wouldnt be surprised if she dies later in the story to another one of the 8) so yeah im pretty sure micheal is going to get all of the 8 eventually whether he wants to or not.

Hah, we'll see if she'd let him get that close without violence. Sofia is out of the rotation for the short term, but we're definitely not done with the remaining members of Team Sibyl. Everything will come back around before the end...

Oh boy, great chapter! Honestly, I hope someday michael gets the chance to come close to sophie and show her he holds Vincent's essence like he showed Sera Clair's. I know its a pipe dream but maybe it could give some solace to her to know that vincent is not wholly gone from the world, like sera seems to get from claire's essence.

He definitely falls into the category of people that "have greatness thrust upon them." I have a feeling he'll be forced to start making some hard choices before too long...

Honestly this chapter was beautiful. So much character development done so skillfully. Now that I think about it, it’s quite ironic that Micheal the person that did not make a single decision for himself before he was an adult decides the fates of entire countries right now.

I really appreciate you saying so! I've been increasingly aware that these Mendian chapters so far have been three straight weeks of nothing but conversation, and next week isn't exactly going to pivot away from that. I think it's important to give the characters space to process their new circumstances, though, so I'm glad that I've been able to keep things enjoyable while they catch their collective breath.

What a delightful chapter. You've an excellent skill for giving breathing room chapters that remain a pleasure to read and do a wonderful job developing characters. I grow more and more fond of Michael as the story progresses, and I very much appreciate his self-awareness and his capacity for reflection. Meanwhile, his relationship with Sera continues to be one of my favorite things in a story full of things that I love. Michael: Gloomily going on about the burdens of power and his concerns about his ability to measure up. Sera, grinning dopily, in her head: This dork. This Dudley Do-right. This absolute puppy of human being. I could kiss him. Truly, it was just *chef's kiss*.

TMarkos

Haha, that puts you one step ahead of Mike. Poor dude's a little oblivious sometimes.

I'm getting serious Michael/Sera power couple vibes and I'm loving it.

Leire will get into the tradeoffs of her position a bit when she has her conversation with Michael, but suffice to say that most Stars of Mendian find living in Mendian to be a vast improvement over their previous circumstances. A rogue Star could totally get up to some trouble, but it would be limited in scope because without support there's no airship to take her around, no guards to keep someone from shooting at her, etc. She's no more resilient to a well-aimed bullet than Jeorg was.

Very good chapter. Probably one of my favourites so far. The sentence "I have rather more power than I should as a result of my long tenure," is quite interesting. Does Mendian have any way of controlling the Star? What happens if a Star decides to simply not follow the orders of the Baxtar or acts without allowance?

TMarkos

Thanks for saying so, I'm glad you're enjoying it! I had a lot of fun writing this chapter.

TMarkos

Well, remember what he knows and doesn't know. Michael has a 1915-ish understanding of physics, and that absolutely does not include an appreciation for the dangers of ionizing radiation. I intended it to be obvious to the reader what sort of danger Leire's soul poses, but the rest of them wouldn't necessarily intuit the purpose behind the protective measures. Presumably it will come up when he speaks with Leire...

Suplely Maple

God I love this story

Gardor

I feel like the whole "spend his life behind lead lined crystal to protect everyone around him" should have been a bigger issue for Mike, that's a pretty restrictive accompaniment to a soul.
