I think the one thing you can definitively predict is that Mike isn't going to be happy about it, whatever the cause and outcome.

TMarkos

I started from plot rather than theme, but for reasons that I think will become apparent as we work through the back half of the story there is a certain amount of thematic baggage that comes inevitably with the plot. For most things, though, I tried to take some time to get to know the characters before committing them to arcs. Writing Jeorg's chapters helped me solidify a bunch of the standing themes we've explored since, since I wanted those to be formational for Mike and they were helpfully also formational for the story.

Earnest

I really hope the soul he just inherited isn't the star's because if it is then everyone in the room with him will probably be dead in 2 weeks. This is based on what we have been told about the star radiation poisoning everyone around them if control slips for even a moment, and him being extremely stressed and then unconscious just now. (remember that after he got an ember's soul he started spewing fire and ashes for a bit) It feels like the most likely other possibility is that he just inherited Galen's Durin soul. It makes a disturbing amount of sense that Liere or Antolin would decide that Michael, the linchpin of their entire plan, is in too much danger and just this once they need to give him a soul to make him less vulnerable. It even makes sense that they would shield the whole situation from sobriquet's view knowing michael would object, and they might even claim he escaped and started killing people which might be hard to conclusively disprove. (or maybe easy for sobriquet and that idea is bad? unclear to me). I could imagine Liere doing this one thing that takes their current war and her succession from very risky to almost ensured and asking forgiveness rather than permission especially after the insane risks michael took last battle.

That's fascinating. Thank you. Look forward to it. Out of interest, two of the modern bibles of story telling, which are a little older than even more modern structural stuff -- Anatomy of Story, and Story, by Truby and McKee respectively -- both advise that a story be created from theme as the most central point, then characters and setting and nature built out from there, once you have the spark of an idea. Your story in setting, subject, and period definitely feels like it's grappling big themes and questions from the off, and the epigrams, the periodical art, and philosophical chapter titles (in the original greek) definitely give your story a huge weight and finish even in a serial format, which is vanishingly rare. Did you start from theme, for such unified high concept and execution? I'm extremely curious. (But also, bravo, regardless.)

Safe to say there's going to be a lot going on next chapter! One of the big themes related to souls is how the power induces people to compromise their principles in the name of pragmatism, which several characters approach from different angles. Luc is notable for being the one character who views the addition of power and purpose as wholly negative, because even individual acts of good done by force of personal power will incite a response from others out of fear or caution. In his experience this tends to more than offset the good act in an unpredictable and destructive way. Mike is closer to this viewpoint naturally; he shares Luc's passivity and powerlessness moreso than Sera's willingness to accept a certain amount of bad in the pursuit of good. Leire, meanwhile, has what is basically a matured version of Sera's stance as developed within the power structure rather than against it. Mike is stuck splitting the difference. He's going to have a fun time coming up!

TMarkos

It is a pretty glaring weakness on Mike's part. Not many people know about it outside of their core team though, since he hasn't absorbed that many souls.

Oh. I missed a chapter. I don't get the impression that Zabala will eventually become an out and out traitor, but a secret isn't a secret when it's shared. I can see him telling someone who tells someone etc. The future Star, which brings me onto this opening image: I can't wait until the Calmharbour Songbird reports that Lord Michael Jr. is fighting with Stanza on the opposite side. It's the stuff of tabloid dreams (which I know this paper isn't). "But the tortoise had stopped acting as prey". Good, high quality, premium-finish, all-purpose foreshadowing. Loved it. "You can’t see yourself as anything but Michael." I enjoyed their back and forth, how they argue and how Michael here is constantly living what was hard for me to really parse when Jeorg explained how souls were added but you were more yourself. I don't know when it clicked, but you can see it now, in the way Michael lives vs how everyone talks about the souls as distinct. The contrast works beautifully I was about to say as well, Leire would die to you is a massive death flag ... but there we are. I didn't expect it quite so quickly. I can't say you waste time. Luc has always felt dangerous to me, but it felt like that bond is really becoming sincere. I hope you don't twist the knife on me, just as I'm starting to open up to him and fear him less around Michael. It's nice to see he's got his purpose. It's interesting to see Michael seeing his own soul as a film or a reflection. I'm sure that'll come back again. But Star now. Oh no. He's about to become quite isolated isn't he. Good thing his girl's Sobriquet. Bad thing he's now leader of a nation at the onset of war gainst the Safid as the Tortoise (I presume) has just penetrated into the middle of their camp looking for him.

Sever i mean

Austin Long

I bet they killed several to take advantage of his moment of weakness for an assaulting atempt.

Kate Yen

It would be a really massive twist to have Leire die here, especially because Luc and Sera would almost certainly not survive being in close proximity during the transfer. The epigraph seems to suggest Amira being killed by Leire, which would be even more out of left field, and leave Amiras conflict with Michael rather unresolved at that. But there's one other Form/Order ensouled I can think of who is already present, who presumably has already been defeated by Leire before and might have reason to challenge her now... I think Michael might have some harsh words for Leire's brand of pragmatism, and her treatment of prisoners, next chapter.

TMarkos

Interesting theory! I need to keep writing so we can find out if you're correct.

Kate Yen

With the huge cliff at the end, no one is talking about the pine statuette. That's the one that broke before - Luc has Gerards soul, crackpot theory confirmed??

TMarkos

Haha, sorry - I try to avoid metanarrative stuff but in this particular case it was my intent to leave the chapter ending without enough information to determine what happens, since Michael also does not know in that moment what is going on.

Pariah

"So light is to be expecred" neved had a comment after a chapter ever turn the end from an "oh shit its happening" moment to an absolute cliff before.... not happy

TMarkos

In fairness he sees all souls as big glowy orbs so light is to be expected.

TMarkos

It's a really inconvenient soul in a variety of ways! We'll have to see what next week holds to know the true consequences of this chapter, though.

TMarkos

Hehe, the epigraphs are always a little bit more meta than the rest of the text for sure. I'm excited to share the next chapter! Need to write the darn thing first though...

jaen

Though to be fair, it could be an intentional misdirection. I guess we have to hang on that cliff for a week to know for sure : D

Guy Incognito

"Only light" when they were just talking about Stellar's death, Leire is nearby and Micheal is getting a new soul. Well that's not worrying at all.

jaen

Oh, for sure, from a watsonian perspective it could be a number of things and we know too little to explicate that from the story events itself. Now that epigraph on the other hand sure is giving a big doylist wink xD

WachTraum

I really hope Micheal finds a way to live with human touch despite Stellar. I worry for his sanity otherwise.

TMarkos

We still don't know a lot about what just happened! There's a lot of different ways this could go, based on the facts presented.

jaen

Well, ain't that ominous. I do hope it's a fake out despite all the flags to the contrary.

TMarkos

It feels like coming at someone through their friends/associates is always a weakness, but in Mike's case it's particularly glaring. He's at least no longer getting knocked out by mundane death in his presence, so that's something.

B

Makes me interested in what those Ardans are up to this time……. Maybe they know an affinity “sacrifice” can incapacitate him? Hmmm
