Chapter 64 - Involution

Mike used Stanza to affect the bond drawing the low soul to him, causing it to separate and disappear as it would naturally. Something that was formational for Mike early in was realizing that there wasn't any afterlife waiting for his "low soul", though he didn't conceive of it as such at the time. It's what started this whole thing off, more or less.

Thank you for reading, and for your support!

Gardor

So Mike used stanza to effect the "low soul" and send it to the afterlife?

Austin Long

Thanks for the chapter

Haha, it's certainly a balancing act with the power scale in this story. I was careful with Galen's soul - I think I've compared potentes to Michael's troublesome rock, back when they were traveling to Mendian. If you come at it the wrong way, it's very much a rock; it is resilient and resists being changed or harmed. Bring the right tools, though, and it's significantly easier. I enjoyed building up this massive unkillable enemy and then having him get taken out by Charles of all people - it's a terrifying soul, but the token-evil-teammate-slash-comic-relief that we've known for most of the story can take him out, no problem. But even taking mostly-invincible-Mike as a premise, there are plenty of dangers. To paraphrase his statement this chapter, being a potens doesn't make you invincible - it just makes dying hurt more.

Fantastic. Fantastic. You are awful. You take hopes and then you twist them, and what's worse you always find a very reasonable way to emphasise why they're horrible hopes and we will suffer soon for having had them: “Sorry,” he murmured. “I don’t mean to - to doomsay, as she said.” He paused. “Your soul does this violence to you, presses you upon the world with greater force. The world cannot help but press back, and I fear it more than anything. I fear what must follow. But I - trust you, more than myself. I have for a long while, despite that selfish fear.” ... “I don’t need to tell you to be careful. You’ve already seen where the road of power ends. So - good luck.” He stepped away, meeting Michael’s eyes once more. “Don’t trust anyone who is glad to hear of this. They aren’t your friends.” I remember you replying to me over on RR before I'd caught up and subscribed to your patreon about how this idea span out in part from a desire to write, in part, an OP main character, and explore that. When Galen didn't die, I thought that was that, mostly (so I was thinking it would be Leire, or Charles or even the Auditor whose name I've currently forgotten who had died). It made a sort of sense, to the writing and the plot. Michael is incredibly offensively powerful, but he's vulnerable too, and if he misjudges things he's very liable to die in the sort of theatre and stakes that he finds he now operates in (beyond even his father's hopes for him once ensouled, I bet). Galen was captured, Michael doesn't get his soul, you preserve this easy threat of tension -- and your war story has had some of the most *genuinely* heart in my mouth action sequences I've read in years. I remember the dash across the barbed wire no-man's land when Sibyll and Sever were catching up, I was twitching around on my sofa and my palms were sweaty. Then... you go and sure him up with this potens style, and then you take away our joy at this anyway. Now, like a suspenseful horror, all the danger has to live in our mind. Destruction will be total and oblique or not at all, so we have to be constantly primed for abstract danger. Bless you for creating sobriquet to hammer that home so horribly well. Obviously it's not a total protection, Galen died, but with his Super-bonifex soul and Spark, both, Michael really should be very survivable so that even with the above I like to think I'd be moderately reassured that once we're out of this particular moment he'd be grand. But ... Luc. If it were not for Luc. Once again, Luc does so much heavy lifting for creating vague threat and horrible foreshadowing for you. Him being durable means, I suspect, that those who want to change the world/stamp their will on the world are going to push him harder into those oblique danger zones. I've no idea what it'll look like, but I'm excited for next wednesday. Lastly. Jeorg. Angel? God? Prime soul. All of the above/Michael simultaneously in a 'God is in us and is us' sorta thing. Hmmm. Curious. I also, for a moment, for clarity's sake, should mentiont that when he deleted Galen's low soul and then found no purchase on the actual immortal soul itself thought that he'd ruined the affinity and ability to claim it. I was primed for him not to become a potens as I said above, but yeah. It's very quickly clarified. Also, thank you for teaching me the word materiel.

I'm excited to share it! This is proving to be an entertaining arc to write.

Glad to see it was a fakeout and I'm curious to see what happens next
