Thank you! I think one of the most challenging aspects of writing this story has been defining Michael as such a dedicated pacifist in the beginning, and then trying to find a realistic way to bring him from a place of pacifism to a stance that is not necessarily it's opposite, but definitely something a little bit more interventionist and decisive. If we are talking of things in terms of lessons he learned from Jeorg (and I try to, where I can) then the bit about change and violence is an important lesson to take away - but so was the lesson about the "hound" his father raised. In the end I think most of us require unpleasant consequences in order to make major changes in the way that we think and act. Michael has been acting with a great deal of respect for the autonomy and integrity of the people that he meets because of Spark's very memorable counterexample. It's served him pretty well thus far, but I think the limitations of that stance are also becoming more and more apparent. As much as Michael doesn't want to be Spark, he also very much does not want to be Karl, who let himself inflict damage on those around him rather than change who he was. We'll have to see what sort of solution he arrives at...

Love the chapter! Interesting to see Michael unlearning his hesitation to do "whats necessary." In this case I can hardly argue Saleh deserves to be saved, though I must say of all people Michael is by far the most capable of finding a peaceful resolution for, say, Luc. In my opinion it makes Spark the best soul for a morally minded protagonist. While other souls' offensive uses are limited to killing outside of extremely lopsided encounters, Spark turns any won fight into an opportunity for rehabilitation. Obviously in some cases death would be more moral (the change becomes violence, etc) but for someone like Luc, justice might look more like therapy. Either way, if Michael isn't too scrupulous with the architects of death and destruction on the Continent I won't be too bothered. He's been doing great with the rank and file so far, and they for the most part seem to deserve mercy the most.
