Mine had two very distinct parts. The bit before my 8th birthday was cool in a lot of ways. My dad was in the army we had a pretty good house lots of space quite a bit of money. I got a lot of toys at that point I think because dad was away in the army a lot and mum was busy with my younger sisters I was sorta left to my own devices a lot as a result my parents got me stuff to compensate. I was pretty spoilt in a materilistic way, but completely deprived in an affection way. I used to fantasise about getting hugs LOL
Then my dad left the army then very soon after that he got sick and almost died (he'd caught some wierd disease in kenya that ate a chunk of his brain). at that point in time we had zero income. like nil. Food was...prety much whatever neighbours gave us. we would go into the woods to collect cones and firewood so we could build fires to keep warm, clothes were all from charity...the electricity was shut off multiple times, baliffs at the door multiple times...
It sounds hard...and yeah it was tough...but im kinda glad that all happened...well...not all of it but most of it..... It really shocked kid me, suddenly toys werent a thing, suddenly whatever you had you had to be extra specially careful with because if it broke or got wrecked you werent getting another. You got an understanding to appreciate what you had. And suddenly we were kinda forced to make our own entertainment. School holidays were getting chucked out the house at 9am and told not to come back till 5pm and so me and my sisters just became feral really. Made our own enertainment, came up with imagination games about heroes and (in my case I was a squirrel LOL) and saving the day and building plans to win, climbing trees, finding ponds, trying to build boats out of wood and nails we had found....Some of the crap I got up to...I will never tell my parents LOL.
I don't think my imagination would be as vivid if that hadnt happened and as a result i dont think half my comics would exist. So yeah oddly lucky in a weird way

I am sorry through all that. Reading all that makes me realize how lucky I am. My dad got laid off for 5 years, and while food was a bit scarce, we stayed in the same house growing up. I just learned to take the good with the bad. Glad you were able to pull through. Many a bright future to you.❤
