Progress update #2 - info about the next release
🕑 Added 2021-06-12 19:26:40 +0000 UTCHey everyone,
I apologize for the delayed progress update! I had been preoccupied with uni exams for two weeks so the development was slightly stalled, but I finished my last exam on the 9th and I've been pumping work into the game since, as now I have tons of free time to commit to not only finalizing Chapter 1 (both of its parts, more on that below), but work on future chapters as well.
At the end of May, I finished fleshing out the outline for the "first season" of the story as well as the final script for Chapter 1, and with the artwork already finished, pretty much all that is left before release is the dialogue and narration. I intend to split Chapter 1 into two parts (two episodes), with the second part coming 2-4 weeks after the first part to give me time to write the dialogue as well as some wiggle room for plot-related artwork, as well as anything 'extra' if I either feel that it is needed or just get inspired by something.
The speed of Elvensang's development has definitely been much slower than what I had hoped for, and while I don't want to rush the game by any means, I also don't want to spend the next five years working on it - after all, there are many more stories to tell. But I /still/ remain confident that I can release future episodes at a gradually faster pace. A huge chunk of time was spent working on the outline with the writing consultant, but that time investment will pay itself back tenfold in the future as well as help with increasing the overall quality of storytelling. There is also the aspect of drawing - as my drawing improves, so too does the speed that I can produce the artwork because of a more refined workflow.
As for the release date of Chapter 1: Part I, I think I can manage the "alpha" release in about a week. Alpha release will be available to patrons of all tiers (this time, at least!), with the public release coming out some week after that. I personally can't help but see both parts of Chapter 1 as filler episodes (part 1 moreso than part 2) - the story will not cover ground that is "redundant", but considering that the outline was finished at the end of May, I will need more time to produce the artwork for the more juicier parts of the plot. But I hope you will enjoy Chapter 1 when it comes, and I definitely encourage you to tell me if you did not. With the alpha release of part 1, I'll drop a discord channel as well where you can easily submit your feedback.
I will also warn you in advance that the "alpha" release may turn out to be far less refined than the official public release. I intend to make it as polished as possible, but I am not ruling out the possibility that the public release will change depending on your feedback, e.g. if you tell me the dialogue is shit in some scene, I will most certainly rewrite it. I think the writing was the most praised aspect of the game by far, but you mustn't forget that I am still an amateur!
Finally, let me say that I appreciate your faith in the project, and I promise to do my best not to let you down.
