Chapter 759 - Just one day
🕑 Added 2025-12-17 09:53:43 +0000 UTCEven hours later, we still sit there, back after two more rounds of making more pancakes and getting some drinks to go with them. Chocolate milk, for example, or some fancy brands of freshly pressed fruit juices whose names I can’t even read.
At some point, we take off our shoes and walk into the sea and let the waves wash over us as we wade there. My mom shows me her favorite places and spots where she saw whales far in the distance. She talks about sailing on a smaller boat and how they tried to teach her to fish and snorkel.
For a while, she even cries.
She tells me how she still misses my father. Not who he became, but who he used to be. A young, dreamy boy, sometimes a silly one, full of his own goals and hopes. She talks about how it felt like the whole world turned against him, slowly shaping him into a bitter shell of who he once was. Someone searching for relief in alcohol, hiding, and lashing out like a cornered animal.
She says she does not deserve any of it because of what she did, and how awful she feels for enjoying pieces of the life she always dreamed of.
She tells me how empty it all feels in the end, with me and Vic in danger.
She is just silly like that. Someone who, when she loves, gives everything she has.
My silly little human.
The more time we spend together, the easier it is to talk, and the more I continue to get confirmation that I was never truly angry at her, not even once. Even as she breaks the unsaid rule and talks about her feelings of what happened after Dad died, and Victoria was taken to prison. She puts out all her thoughts for me while she stands knee-deep in the sea with the sun shining over the waves behind her.
I listen to it and tell her some things of my own. What happened after we split, about the tutorial, and the people I met.
That’s when she asks, “You keep saying your group, team, and similar things. But what you really mean is your friends, right?”
I open and close my mouth before saying. “Yes, that’s what I mean.”
“I’m glad.” Her face turns a bit sad as she grabs my hand. “You know it is okay. No one will shout at you or hit you for getting close to people anymore.”
“I know.”
She squeezes as strongly as she can before smiling, “Your hand is so strong.”
“Actually, my body is one of the weakest out of my gr… out of my friends. Probably the weakest.”
“Really?”
“It’s a feature,” I smile at her. “Some of the others could probably catch a bullet just by using their senses and the speed of their bodies. Others could probably get hit by a rocket and not even get a scratch.”
“That sounds scary. So much is changing and so quickly.”
“There is nothing we can do but adapt,” I say, and then, while looking at her, I pull my foot out of the water and put it on the surface. I pull out the second one and stand on water. I cheat a bit, not standing on the wavy surface and instead using kinetic energy to float there, but I don’t need to say it out loud.
“Show-off,” she keeps smiling at me and even splashes some water towards me, which freezes in the air.
She starts walking again, wading through the water, and I follow, pretending to walk on the surface.
“You can’t stay too long?” she asks.
“Just one day before I get pulled back, but before that, I want to check on the families of my friends and meet a few more people. Usually, I would just ignore it all and stay with you, but I think it is important for me to do.”
"Yes," she agrees with me with a little smile she tries to hide.
After that, I allow myself to stay a few hours longer while also releasing everyone I held once my mom asks me to. Some of these people run in panic, there is a bit of screaming, and a few pass out. Though no one is hurt, I know because I checked. All machines restart, and animals start moving too.
To avoid all that commotion, we go into a garden that I block out for us and talk about silly things while watching some cooking competition show that my mom lets play in the background on TV.
Only when it feels like it is as good a time as any, we say our goodbyes, and I get another long hug.
Once again flying high into the air, I look down, miles below, using my strengthened sight to watch my mother, who now can’t see me anymore. She starts shaking and even crying again, but also smiling happily.
After a minute, she calms down, fixes herself, and heads to the front of the house, where she starts talking to the gardener and apologizing deeply, and then continues to move from person to person and apologize to everyone.
I remember her face one more time and force myself to look away as I grab the smartphone from the air where I left it. There are multiple missed calls from the same censored number, a few from Channeler, and some messages as well. I ignore most and find only the ones with the locations of my friends’ families. I don’t hold my flight back that much and travel all over the country checking on everyone.
Min-Jae’s family has been moved to a nice house. I see his parents and siblings for the first time as it’s afternoon, and they gather at home. His dad especially reminds me of Min-Jae and is quite tall as well, likely hinting at his son reaching a similar height one day. I remember who I should see, the number of members, and confirm everyone is there and safe. Then, as promised, I do some mischief.
I destroy homework. I damage plumbing. I teleport to the bathroom and pour out all the expensive perfumes into the sink, and open all the toilet lids. I pierce all the wheels on both cars.
Next, I check on Tess’ mother. I find her at home, alone, absorbed in her work at her computer in the luxurious apartment where Tess lived, near the top of a shorter skyscraper. One side opens onto a huge terrace overlooking the nearby park, while floor to ceiling windows face the city. Her mother looks similar to Tess, tall, blonde hair, and a slim figure, though her expression is much more closed off, especially as she works.
I watch her for a minute longer before I fly away, waving at a kid I notice staring at me out of the window of his room as I was floating there.
As promised, I don’t check on the twins and the sisters’ adoptive families, though I really want to give the twins’ aunt a little visit after hearing what she has done. But, in the end, it is up to these two to deal with.
Both Maya’s mother and father and Lily’s father seem to be doing well. Channeler took care of most things, and they have been getting a steady stream of money. Almost as if out of nowhere, they became lucky, and our country and the system itself helps them out with everything. It is nice to see.
Lastly, guided by flashes of shared memories, I find where Biscuit used to live as a young puppy. The house of the girl who was starving him so often and using him as a prop for these cruel videos.
Sitting on a nearby roof, I watch the heat signatures moving inside, and through the window, I see their faces, confirming they are the right people.
It takes a good effort for me not to burn them to ashes where they stand, and memories and feelings from the tiny corgi linger in the foreground. In the end, I follow Biscuit’s wishes and let them live. I tie Ley Lines to them and teleport them far away from the house, and I do not care about them anymore.
Then I lift my hand into the air with a palm pointing downward and slowly start to move it down.
The house begins to crush under an invisible force as if a huge, unstoppable press begins to press down on it. It bends inward with a deep, hollow sound. Tiles crack, sliding over each other before shattering as the pressure keeps coming, steady and indifferent.
Walls follow soon after. Windows burst outward with glass turning into brief clouds that glitter once in the light and then vanish. Beams snap deep inside, one after another, in a sequence of muted thuds that travel through the air and that I can feel.
The smell of old wood, mold, and cheap paint spreads through the air. Somewhere inside, a doorframe twists and finally breaks, the sound sharp like a flash of a whip.
I keep my hand steady.
The walls cave inward completely now. What was once a house now becomes a shrinking shape, then a pile, then something flatter. The slow press continues until nothing remains but crushed material forced into the ground beneath it.
When I finally lower my hand fully, there is no house.
I turn away and leave before I can reconsider and search for the heat signatures I teleported away.
The sky is already darkening, colors deepening as the sun begins to set. I rise into the air again, faster this time and higher. Almost as high as I can before I allow my mana to spread and radiate into the area. Then I wait to become noticed.
It doesn’t take long, and a mana signal directed at me answers, and I twist in the air and fly that way.
Absentmindedly, I open my status and glance it over.

The penthouse I find him in is huge and luxurious in that sort of old-school way. A lot of leather, wood, and ornaments, but it avoids feeling tacky or overdone.
On one side of the room, a huge fireplace dominates the space with some wood already burning inside. The other wall is dominated by an enormous TV that plays news, where I notice a few short clips of way too big animals.
“Honestly, I did not expect you here. It’s a surprise, but the kind I don’t mind,” Adrian says, and I watch as the other presence behind him moves. The spider, as big as a smaller dog, climbs from behind the bar onto the top of it, carefully and slowly. There it stops and with one of its front legs taps on Adrian’s hand that holds the glass.
“Yes, don’t worry,” he answers with a smile to the spider, and turns back to me. “Have you met Septa on the eighth floor?”
“Briefly. She used to be smaller, though.”
“Yes, yes she did,” he says and shortly rubs her head, which the spider seems to enjoy.
“You seem to be settling in,” I say as I look around the place.
Instead of answering right away, he pours another glass, mixes in some liquor, and adds a few pieces of ice. He then walks towards me and offers me the drink, which I take. Meanwhile, Septa moves back to the floor and in front of the fireplace, where she watches the flames.
Gesturing at me to sit, Adrian sits down first. “Settling in... I suppose I am. After all, unlike you, I will be staying here."

Its basically saying he'll be considered as having undergone one strengthening instead of the two he had already undergone giving him 3 more times to strengthen or upgrade the trait(since his cap also went up) if only his cap had increased it would have been 2/4

I'd certainly say yes. LissLiss killed an absolute in the tutorial and then the Ruler Envy. Adrian is currently Champion level with potentially the ability to knock off weak absolutes (based on his comment on pairing with planets he could take - assuming they'll have an absolute)

Thinking back on the Adrian fight, I think one technique Cerim uses that many other authors don't is his ability to make hypercognition feel actually fast and uncanny. Rather than a sort of blanket "a flurry of dozens of strikes flew in mere seconds" type of statement, we see each individual component of Nat's fight play out in slow motion, diverting thermal energy, igniting the combustion weave, channeling black mana, etc all in a second. Every component feel full and impactful, only for Nat's inner monologue to count down another second

Adrian is already so much stronger than him and he still struggled to get through it. Also keep in mind we dknt know his level so he could have the third trait, and the second stat enhancement, or he'll even the third! Each of those is insane, nat hasn't had one in like 200 levels!

Nat has manifestation, which I hope can combat mirror And I’m wondering can he mirror black mana. And I believe he can’t. Unless he mirrors everything about nat that that makes him able to create black mana. Then yeah. But yea, it would be a pain in the ass to fight yourself. But even if Adrian can mirror skills. That doesn’t mean he can use them, like the original, or have the creative capacity to use them uniquely.

Getting the spider after getting the wraith is pretty ridiculous. Even though I know biscuit will wipe the floor with Septa, it still is crazy having basically two different bonds. The gap was already large and now Nat is going to have to go through a legendary OP training arc for the next two years. Likely means topping Adrian's 7th floor record and getting another star fragment he could actually use this time. Even then I'm not sure how he is going to counter that mirror ability. Maybe sneakthaniel?

I wonder how Nat is going to counter Adrian’s mirror ability. An obvious contender would be black mana… but I dunno if that would be as satisfying as just having better mastery of those skills than whatever copy Adrian could do. Alternatively though there is no reason for Adrian to copy Nat’s skills as he’s still much stronger.

Here's what I'm assuming happened. Adrian did infact get a Earth stay token for getting 1st in the previous tournament. And now that he's on Earth he has/will complete the dungeon to become to Absolute of earth. And the system won't send him back into the tutorial as an Attendee now that he's the absolute. It might even trigger the pairing completion early

I had been wondering if Adrian actually finished the tutorial and was staying and not just using a token and I suppose that answers that. I'm curious about septa , didn't Nat just look at the Moon and see her there? How does the old animal companion of the ruler of envy have a connection/ relationship with Adrian? Or perhaps that's the septa from the tutorial floor who Adrian bonded with? That makes more sense than being a mini version of the still giant septa on the moon after all.

I think this fucked up all nat plans. He prob thought adrain would stay for a few days not 'forever', and in doing so, he basically has nat family and nat friends family as hostages (kind of). Its probably the thing that Adrian will use as leverage against nat (having earth as hostage, because he dosnt care and clearly hated his days in earth)

Off topic for this chapter but thinking about Kindness, there is no way she is completely sane, right? With how long she has lived, the things she has done, and her desire to die, not to mention the fact she probably grew up with very different moral values on her world and era. She is probably very off-kilter, at a minimum. I suspect she is just really good at presenting a facade.

He spoke briefly about how bad it felt to not only lose his previous power as an absolute, but also to weaken to the point he thought he might never recover. A bit of mental revenge against the place he stayed when it all felt hopeless to him.

8th floor quest was to protect the ruler candidate. This was Tyven. Tyven had a spider called septa who almost killed Nat through her poisonous legs. Tyven turned out to be Ruler of Envy. The spider on the moon was Envy’s champion vessel. Aka septa.

I wonder if the reason Adrian was upset a few chapters ago is because he was kicked out of beyond before he was ready, or maybe he used an earth visit token and got a notification he couldn't go back. Nat's time with his mom was sweet, but I feel awful for all the people frozen for hours. That's going to need some therapy lol.

I wonder what the requirements for Fruadrian were to be 'finished' since he didn't really join the tutorial, since he started in Beyond. So for him it wasn't to clear the last floor. Maybe he could've left at any point or maybe reaching the 7th (I think) floor of beyond allows you to leave permanently no matter where you are in the tutorial. Or maybe he can come and go at will, but that seems unlikely given his words and what Ruby said about how difficult it was to come back after the tutorial. Also it's interesting that his two hearts (kinetic and ignition) are the only two traits whose names didn't change. Will he address the changed constructs? Or is it just their strengthend form and they do the same still but better?

Great chapter. Since it seems that Adrian is done with the tutorial, he got everything he wanted and the other floors are too difficult even for him to get anything useful in the remaining time. Also the constructs have also undergone evolutions, and I guess there are also new ones.

That's worrying. Adrian is consolidating power and ionce Nat and the rest of the group 4 come out of the tutorial, Earth will be squarely under Adrian's thumb. I think the planet is a lost cause tbh. It's better Nat starts looking to settle somewhere else, because there is no point fighting this returnee. Best strategy is to wait for him to predictably hit the same progress wall he hit in his previous life and then just out pace him. But that's hundreds or thousands of years into the future. There's also family of group 4 to consider. Best case scenario is for them to leave anyway, because their families can be used as hostages to control them. So better to just write them off and dip.
