Spectrum Thief is Good and Free
🕑 Added 2025-08-07 14:11:18 +0000 UTCIn this video, I introduce a free plugin called Spectrum Thief that I recently discovered and found incredibly useful.
It allows you to clone the EQ curve of speaker cabinets or amplifiers, or even match the spectral shape of entire tracks, making it easy to consolidate multiple EQs into a single IR sample.
I've used it in my workflow for both creative sound design and practical CPU-saving solutions, and it has proven very versatile. If you're interested, you can find the download link in the description below and try it out for yourself.
Introduction to Spectrum Thief, a free plugin designed primarily for guitar players to clone EQ curves of speaker cabinets or amplifiers.
Spectrum Thief allows users to copy the spectral curve of a source and apply it to another sound, effectively serving as an EQ matcher with an IR (impulse response) generator.
The plugin is not open source, but it is free to use and created by a YouTuber known for debunking audio myths.
The workflow involves recording a target EQ curve, a source EQ curve, and calculating the difference, which can be exported as an IR sample for use in convolution reverb plugins.
Spectrum Thief can streamline and replace multiple EQ and spectrum balancing plugins, saving CPU and making it easier to share projects without plugin dependencies.
The plugin uses the maximum peak value for each frequency bin rather than an average, making it less suited for matching full tracks and more for specific purposes.
Features include adjustable smoothing of the EQ curve for a less detailed or more natural effect and limiting which parts of the frequency spectrum are affected.
Demonstrations show how the plugin can clone and transfer EQ characteristics from one drum sound (like a snare or hi-hat) to another, aiding in sound design and creating consistent tonality.
Spectrum Thief can consolidate multiple EQ processes into a single IR sample, simplifying project setups.
The tool is useful both for its intended purpose of guitar amp EQ cloning and for creative sound design approaches beyond guitar tones.
