Back-to-School Safety: A Parent’s Guide to Keeping Kids Safe This School Year
🕑 Added 2025-08-05 12:01:17 +0000 UTCAs the back-to-school season kicks off, there’s more on our minds than just school supplies and schedules. Your child’s safety—on the way to school, in the classroom, and beyond—is just as important.
Whether your child is walking, riding the bus, or learning in a busy school environment, here’s a simple guide to help you prepare and protect them for a safe, confident return to school.
1. Travel Safety Tips
For Walkers:
Practice the route to school together
Teach kids to look both ways before crossing streets
Use crosswalks and obey crossing guards
Walk in groups when possible
For Bus Riders:
Arrive at the stop early and stand back from the curb
Wait for the bus to stop completely before boarding
Stay seated and follow the driver’s instructions
Cross in front of the bus—never behind it
For Car Riders:
Use appropriate car seats, boosters, and seat belts
Always drop off and pick up in designated school zones
Watch for children during drop-off and pick-up times
2. School Safety Reminders
Make sure your child knows their full name, your contact information, and how to reach a trusted adult
Talk about the importance of staying with their group or class
Review school emergency procedures in an age-appropriate way
Encourage open conversations about bullying, peer pressure, and social dynamics
3. Online & Tech Safety
Teach children not to share personal info online or with strangers
Review school rules about device use and responsible behavior
Remind them that anything they post or send can be seen or shared
4. Health & Hygiene
Remind your child to wash hands regularly, especially before eating
Pack tissues and hand sanitizer in their backpack
Keep them home when they’re sick and review school health guidelines
Ensure vaccinations and wellness checks are up to date
5. Emotional Safety Counts Too
Check in with your child emotionally—new routines can be overwhelming
Let them know it's okay to talk about their fears, stress, or worries
Keep lines of communication open with teachers and school staff
Encourage kindness, empathy, and inclusion at every opportunity
Preparing for back-to-school safety doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A little planning and open communication go a long way. When kids feel safe and supported, they’re more confident, focused, and ready to learn.
Here’s to a safe, healthy, and happy school year for your child—and peace of mind for you.
