Chapter 8: The Weight of a Soul
🕑 Added 2025-09-03 18:20:18 +0000 UTCThe thought was so sharp and clear it felt like a physical blow: Tony Stark is in a cave in Afghanistan right now.
For one, breathtaking second, Hermione saw a golden path unfurl before her. She saw the headlines, the panic on Wall Street, the nosedive of Stark Industries' stock as the world believed its genius figurehead was gone forever. She could leverage that knowledge. She could buy in when the company was on its knees and ride the wave all the way to unimaginable wealth when Iron Man emerged and changed the world. Money was power. It was resources, legitimacy, a shield against the cosmic horrors she knew were coming.
Then, just as quickly, the vision crumbled into dust. A bitter, humorless laugh escaped her lips. Who was she kidding? She was a twelve-year-old ghost with no identity, no birth certificate, and no legal right to even exist in this dimension, let alone open a brokerage account. The cash in her pocket was stained with the blood of last night's work. She was a phantom, and phantoms couldn't play the stock market.
"Damn it all," she hissed, the frustration so intense it made her teeth ache.
Repeating the hollow mantra that money was a worldly illusion did nothing to soothe the fiery anger in her gut. She stalked through the grimy, predawn streets of Hell's Kitchen until she found what had to be the most dilapidated motel in the borough. The neon 'VACANCY' sign sputtered and buzzed, casting the entrance in a sickly, pulsating green light that made the peeling paint and cracked pavement look even more decrepit.
The air inside was a foul cocktail of stale cigarette smoke, industrial-strength bleach, and the quiet, lingering smell of human misery. She slapped the crumpled, blood-flecked bills onto the sticky counter. The night manager, a gaunt man with the haunted, hollowed-out eyes of someone who had seen too much, gave the cash a weary look. His gaze drifted from the money to her small, childlike frame and back again, a flicker of something—hesitation, maybe even a shred of concern—in his expression.
Hermione let her hand rest on the wand hidden up her sleeve, her mind cycling through a list of potential spells. A simple Confusion Charm if he asked too many questions. A Memory Charm if he saw too much. Or, if he had any predatory thoughts at all, something far more permanent.
To her profound disappointment, the man just sighed, a rattling wheeze that seemed to take all the fight out of him. "One night," he mumbled, his voice raspy. "Key's on the counter. Don't make a mess."
Boring, she thought, a flicker of irritation crossing her mind. She had been hoping for an excuse to practice.
The room was a small, square box of despair. The single flickering bulb cast long, distorted shadows across the stained wallpaper. The mattress was a lumpy landscape of broken springs that groaned in protest as she sat down. Through the thin walls, she could hear the sounds of the city that never sleeps: a couple shouting, a distant siren, the rumble of an early-morning garbage truck. She locked the door, wedged a rickety chair under the knob, and finally allowed the bone-deep exhaustion from her night's work to pull her into a restless sleep.
The next morning, a pristine black sedan, so out of place in this neighborhood it might as well have been a spaceship, slid to a halt in front of the motel. Four men in identical, immaculate black suits stepped out, moving with a synchronized, unnerving efficiency. Their leader, a man with a disarmingly calm face and a receding hairline, flashed a badge at the terrified motel owner.
"Room 107," Agent Phil Coulson said, his tone polite but leaving no room for argument.
He led his team down the hallway, their polished shoes silent on the threadbare carpet. He knocked once, a precise, three-tap rhythm, then stepped back, listening intently. There was no response. After a moment, he took the master key and unlocked the door, slipping inside with the fluid grace of a seasoned professional.
The room was empty.
"Clear," he announced, his voice low. He began a meticulous examination of the space. The bed was unmade, the window still locked from the inside. There was no luggage, no clothes, no personal effects of any kind. A forensic sweep would later confirm there were no fingerprints, no stray hairs, no DNA evidence at all. It was as if the room's occupant had been a ghost. He reached out and pressed his palm against the sheets. They were still faintly warm.
"She was here less than an hour ago," Coulson stated, his professional calm unwavering. "Sweep the area. I want to know how she left this room without using the door or the window."
Minutes later, his agents returned, their expressions grim. "Negative, sir," one reported. "No sign of the asset on any camera. It's a complete ghost. In and out without a trace."
Coulson's frown deepened. He pulled out a secure satellite phone. "Coulson," he said. "The asset has vanished. No physical or electronic signs of egress. I'm theorizing an unknown transport ability." He listened for a moment. "Yes, sir. Understood."
High above the world, in the sterile, circular office of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, Director Nick Fury hung up. He swiveled in his chair, his one good eye staring out at the endless expanse of clouds. The door chimed.
"Enter."
Agent Maria Hill walked in, her posture ramrod straight, and placed a thin, gray folder on his desk. "The preliminary report from the shawarma shop incident, sir. It's… anomalous."
Fury opened the folder. He'd already read it three times. A robbery-homicide with two dead assailants. The first had died from what the coroner could only describe as a "localized, high-velocity impact" that had pulverized his internal organs, despite there being no bullet. The second had his throat sliced open by a wound so fine and deep it couldn't have been made by any conventional blade. The sole witness, the shop owner, was under psychiatric observation, babbling about invisible forces and ghosts.
And clipped to the top page was a grainy, pixelated security photo. It showed a small, unassuming girl with a riot of bushy brown hair, standing in the middle of the carnage. Fury's gaze hardened. He wasn't just looking at a child. He was looking at a new, unknown, and extremely dangerous variable in a world already full of them.
The Hogwarts lawn was damp with dew, the crisp autumn air carrying the scent of freshly cut grass and the distant, loamy smell of the Forbidden Forest. The first-year Gryffindors and Slytherins stood in two neat, hostile lines, a flying broom resting at each of their feet.
Hermione stood rigid, already annoyed. The tension between the two houses was a palpable thing, a low hum of animosity in the air. Across the lawn, Draco Malfoy was sneering at Ron, who was scowling right back. It was pathetic.
This whole system is a joke, she thought, her mind starting to dissect the problem with the cold precision of a surgeon. Forget Voldemort; the real, systemic villain of the wizarding world was the Sorting Hat. It was an institutionalized disaster, a pedagogical nightmare. On their very first day, a group of impressionable eleven-year-olds were irrevocably branded and segregated into ideological camps. It wasn't a school-house system; it was a recruitment drive for four rival gangs.
You're brave? Go join the other reckless glory-hounds. You're ambitious? Here's a dungeon full of junior elitists for you to network with. And for what? They all attended the same classes. There was no specialized curriculum. It was a system that served no purpose other than to breed prejudice and ensure that petty childhood rivalries could fester into lifelong, blood-soaked conflicts.
"Good afternoon, students!" Madam Hooch's sharp voice cut through the tension. After a brisk speech, the lesson began. "Now, place your right hand over your broom and say, 'Up!'"
A wave of voices, a mix of hopeful whispers and demanding shouts, swept across the lawn. Hermione held out her hand. "Up," she said, her voice laced with quiet confidence.
The broom gave a lazy roll.
She frowned. This was supposed to be simple. Magic was about will, and her will was absolute. "Up!" she commanded.
It wobbled, but remained stubbornly grounded. A hot flush of anger crept up her neck. This magic felt different. It wasn't responding to her cold, precise intent. It wanted something else, something she didn't have. Next to her, Harry's broom had already smacked into his palm. He shot her a look of pure surprise. It was the first time he had ever seen her fail at anything.
Gritting her teeth, she glared at the inanimate object. "Up!" she snarled. It finally shot into her hand.
"Excellent!" Madam Hooch eventually called out. "Now, mount your brooms. Grip them tight."
Hermione stared at the thin, polished shaft of her broom. A phantom memory, a ghost of a feeling from her old body, made her hesitate. She instinctively thought about the logistics of straddling such a narrow object. Isn't that going to be incredibly uncomfortable? Won't it… hurt?
The thought died as a wave of cold, hollow sadness washed over her. Oh. Right. The realization was a sudden, sharp pang of grief for a part of herself she hadn't even realized she still missed. That specific problem was no longer one she had to worry about. The loss was so unexpected and so intense that it instantly curdled into pure, white-hot anger.
Damn it all!
Furious, she swung her leg over and sat on the broom sidesaddle, her back rigid with indignation.
Ron, already wobbling precariously on his own broom, leaned over. "Hermione," he whispered, "Madam Hooch said we have to straddle—"
"Shut up!" she snapped, her voice cracking like a whip.
"Oh," Ron squeaked, shrinking away. "Okay."
