Chapter 13 Make big news
🕑 Added 2025-10-12 11:26:09 +0000 UTCRob banks, bomb streets, poison, kill. What hasn't Scarecrow done? But he came across Connors today, and extortion hit him on the head.
Usually, a big score can't get five million U.S. dollars, let alone for a scarecrow who spent all his money preparing a tanker full of "fear gas." Not to mention five million dollars, it would be a struggle to get five hundred dollars from him now. And even if he had all that money, it was absolutely impossible for the Scarecrow to hand it over to Connors just to open a car door lock.
But the glass of the tanker was so strong that the Scarecrow could not break it with his bare hands. There was not a single useful tool in the car, and the small cab had almost become his cage.
Connors stood by the front of the car and stared at the Scarecrow inside, whose eyes under his hood were so wide with fury that Connors couldn't help but sigh.
"The ability of this 'Lockpicking Master' is almost too easy to use…"
His intention was simply to lock the tanker's liquid inlet and outlet; the various locks in the car were just an afterthought, but they were surprisingly effective. Going on like this, until Batman arrived, the Scarecrow would have to be locked up inside the car and unable to come out.
Connors was in no hurry and planned to wait slowly, but Harley Quinn disagreed.
"Red, release him quickly."
Connors wondered, "What?"
Harley Quinn smiled and saw that Connors had not opened the car door immediately, so she took off her shoe and pointed the stiletto heel at the window glass.
CRACK!
Dense cracks suddenly spiderwebbed across the car window.
Scarecrow was overjoyed. "Well done, Harley, go ahead!"
Harley Quinn did not disappoint the Scarecrow. The heel of her shoe smashed the glass completely after several successive blows, sending shards all over the floor.
Connors took a few steps back. He was going to take a look at what Harley Quinn's purpose was in releasing the Scarecrow.
"After the fall of Gotham, the credit must be yours, Harley Quinn! You really didn't let me down!" After the Scarecrow finished speaking, the "fear gas" in the bottles and jars on his body got out of the tanker truck before he did. He intended to plunge the few people in front of him into fear, then calmly get out of the truck.
But Harley Quinn was now standing a short distance away at a fire hydrant, with the water pipe sprinkler pointed at the tanker's broken window. A large amount of water vapor made it impossible for Scarecrow's fear gas to spread through the air, and naturally, it did not allow Harley to fall into fear.
When the Scarecrow realized this and rushed to get out of the tanker, Harley Quinn dropped the water gun sprinkler and then picked up a rock from the side of the road.
"Bang!"
"'A clown's vassal'?"
"Bang!"
"'You people'?"
"Bang!"
"'Dear Scarecrow'?"
With the stone in her hand, Harley Quinn smashed it again and again against the head of the Scarecrow as he tried to climb out, all while laughing like a maniac. The makeup and eyeshadow applied to her face were affected by the water from the fire hydrant, and it flowed down her cheeks as if she were crying two black tears.
Damn, she's going to smash the Scarecrow to death… Connors quickly stepped forward and stopped Harley Quinn. At the same time, he swiped a hand over the Scarecrow. The bottles and jars filled with the poison of fear were "locked" in an instant.
Strictly speaking, they weren't locked. Connors just used his ability on the switches and safety features Scarecrow had set, destroying them. According to his ever-deeper use of "Lockpicking Master," these things were just handy. At present, the only locks that could stump him were super-large, super-complex, or extremely simple locks.
"Harley, what's wrong?" After Connors sabotaged Scarecrow's equipment, he didn't mind him anymore, but cared about Harley's state.
"Why did Scarecrow and Riddler work with the Joker, but people still call them 'Scarecrow' and 'Riddler,' not 'Joker's Scarecrow'?"
"And the fact that I helped the Joker escape from Arkham made me put on the Joker label. Even though I announced on TV that 'Harley' was independent, they still regarded me as a Joker vassal."
Harley Quinn laughed and dropped the stone in her hand, speaking in a tone that was anything but light.
"…" This question was really not easy for Connors to answer. In the comics, when Harley Quinn and the Joker split, they split. There weren't so many follow-ups. He couldn't tell Harley, "You go and make big news for yourself, so that Batman treats you as his number one enemy independent of the Joker, and your reputation will be completely established in the ears of other villains."
Although it would meet his needs for the Melon-eating System, his close-knit self with Harley Quinn would also become a "villain," which did not meet Connors' requirements for himself as a "melon-eater."
"I've decided. I'm going to make big news!" Harley Quinn seemed to have a new idea. "And this time, I'm not going to lean on anyone!"
Connors covered his face, fearing what she was about to do. What made him even more uncomfortable was that the Batwing was now hovering in the air thirty meters above the ground. Mr. Wayne himself landed from the air and happened to hear Harley Quinn say she was going to make big news.
Batman appeared, and Harley Quinn left decisively. The little madwoman was gone, with no idea what news she was going to make.
Only Connors, Batman, and Scarecrow were left on the scene.
"Coming?" Connors greeted as if nothing had happened.
"…" Batman was a little helpless. Before Scarecrow could even release his fear gas, Harley Quinn's "Crime Preview" had faded away, and now he saw Connors here again. He instinctively had a premonition that something was about to go wrong.
Sure enough, Batman soon saw Connors reach for the car door, pull the Scarecrow out, and wave his palm over the other man's gear. Not even the Scarecrow himself, the owner of the "fear gas," noticed that work had begun on the devices he was wearing.
Different liquids were blended rapidly through the pipes into "fear gas," which then filled the air under the action of the atomizing device.
Almost instantly, Batman lost sight of Scarecrow and Connors. His vision was replaced by a gloomy cave, around which giant bats pounced on him from all directions.
"I remember that people who are trapped in fear gas can't accept signals from the outside world." Instead of cheering for Batman as he did during the Batman vs. Joker fight, Connors chose to watch the fight quietly from the sidelines.
Unfortunately, Batman was in a hallucination, giving an output to the air, and Scarecrow, who was afraid to get entangled with Batman due to Connors's presence, always kept his distance. The battle was really nothing to watch, and Connors would have yawned if he hadn't covered his mouth and nose with his soaked clothes at this time.
Then, the corner of his eye inadvertently saw marks Harley Quinn had left on the ground:
"Bane and the Penguin are also in action."
At this point, Bane was standing atop a tall building, looking through a telescope. After seeing Batman and Scarecrow, along with a strong young man who appeared to be doing nothing, he decisively chose to leave.
The Penguin was ordering his men to break into the Gotham City stadium, intending to fire indiscriminately. However, the entire stadium was now completely covered in black ice.
The person who made this ice was none other than the star singer, Shayna. Different from the glamorous image on the concert stage, at this time she was tied upside down in the air by green vines that looked like living creatures. She was still tied up in a trick, with most of her clothes broken and a trace of blood on the corners of her mouth. Apparently, she had just experienced a big battle.
The person who forced her into this situation was the first sister of Gotham, Poison Ivy. She had come after the restlessness in her heart, but the presence of ice in Gotham Stadium and the large number of plants around her freezing to death made her decide to kill the woman she had never seen before, before going to find the source of her restlessness.
