The Diner

I had sketched up a rough view for the strip, of this 50s "rail car" style diner- I'm a sucker for cool old architecture- and started looking up images of the real thing so I could start inking.
And in a nice bit of serendipity, one of the first pics that came up was a nice shot of a 1937 diner, in recently-restored condition, that was almost precisely the same angle and perspective I'd just drawn. :)
I wound up simply tracing it, and coloring it in the original colors- though it was kind of a pity I couldn't reproduce the "chrome" tones- and reworked the surroundings. It's the kind of thing I wish I had more time to really work on the color and shading.

You know Doc Nickel, to be honest, I really like it. Very interesting decision. And the style and color are all in place. I think you all guessed and respect you for it.
With a name like Starlite all it needs is a flying saucer on the roof.... or... well we don't yet know what sort of late night party is going on in there...

That looks amazing, Doc! I love that old school architecture, as well. and I can already picture the inside: Lots of stainless steel and chrome, booths along one wall and a long lunch counter facing the kitchen with backless stools fixed into the floor. There's a large order wheel in the kitchen window behind the counter. A waitress that calls everyone "Darlin'" or "Hon", with a pencil stuck behind one ear, and a cook who looks like he's been there since the place opened.

I'm just beginning with an airbrush(Got myself a Badger 105 Patriot. Nice... ) but haven't gotten further than using it for priming, some poorly execued basecoating, and the occasional sealing, yet. Not even going to check that jp site. It's not as if my confidence needs another hit... Of course, I think that mini was done with brushes, not an airbrush.

There is something very similar in Bowden, Alberta, Canada: The Starlite Diner Car. Pretty good for eats--and I'd laugh if that was the one you based this off of.

It wasn't so much a question of ability, just one of time. Even with tracing photo, that strip still took something like five hours to complete. :) I can't say I'm any kind of expert at it like that guy, but I have used, and was pretty good with, an airbrush- and "chrome" lettering was basically a staple. It looks pretty good as is... But if you want to improve on the metallic representation, have you studied Non-Metallic Metallic painting techniques? (no I can't paint like that. Not even close) There may be a few YouTube videos explaining the techniques, but I'm not certain how it translates to working digitally.
