The tension was palpable, and every sound seemed amplified—the soft hum of the wind outside, the distant staccato of gunfire that punctuated the battlefield, and the faint creak of the building's metal frame settling around them.
"Stay close, and keep your ears sharp," Max whispered, his voice calm but focused. His eyes, steel-gray and calculating, never stopped moving.
They stepped inside, and the environment changed immediately. The narrow hallways of the building created an oppressive atmosphere that seemed to press in on them from all sides. Fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting shadows that danced across the walls like spectral figures. A thin layer of dust covered the floor, their footprints creating a clear trail behind them. Every few seconds, faint footsteps could be heard from above—a rhythmic, purposeful sound that signaled another squad was nearby, hunting for loot or preparing an ambush.
Max raised his hand, fingers splayed in a silent command. Sera froze mid-step.
"I hear them. They're upstairs," he whispered, tilting his head slightly to better capture the sounds above. "Three sets of footsteps. Maybe more."
Sera nodded, her grip tightening on her weapon until her knuckles whitened. "What's the plan?" Her voice was barely audible, a breath of sound in the silent corridor.

He dropped into a crouch that seemed almost instinctual and moved silently up the staircase, distributing his weight with each step to minimize noise. Communication chatter in a foreign language echoed through the building—urgent, alarmed.
"Get ready!" Max barked, sliding behind a doorframe and switching his rifle to full auto. "They're coming in hot."
Sera took cover behind a stack of metal crates, the smell of rust filling her nostrils as she pressed against them. She peeked out cautiously, controlling her breathing to steady her aim. The corridor ahead was long and narrow—a perfect funnel.
Two enemies rounded the corner almost simultaneously, guns blazing in a desperate counterattack. Bullets ricocheted off the walls and ceiling, sending sparks and concrete dust flying through the air. The sound was thunderous, disorienting.

Sera nodded and leaned out from her position, firing her UMP9 in controlled, disciplined bursts. The weapon's modest recoil pushed against her hands, but she managed to keep her aim steady through sheer determination. Tracers cut through the dusty air, forcing the enemies to dive behind whatever cover they could find. One cried out as a bullet grazed his shoulder, leaving a crimson streak.
"They're pinned!" she called out, ducking back as return fire splintered the crate beside her head.
While Sera kept the enemies pinned down with surprising effectiveness, Max slipped out through another doorway and circled around through what appeared to be an abandoned office space. He moved quickly but quietly, using the sound of gunfire to mask his footsteps. Tables were overturned, paperwork scattered—evidence of a hasty evacuation from some forgotten time.
As he reached the hallway behind the enemies, he spotted one of them kneeling, frantically reloading a shotgun with trembling hands. The other was focused entirely on Sera's position, blind to the threat behind them. Without hesitation, Max raised his rifle and fired a single, precise shot that caught the reloading player in the back of the head, then quickly adjusted his aim and fired again.

Max shrugged as he collected ammunition from one of the bodies, his movements economical and purpose-driven. "Experience. They were too focused on you to notice me sneaking around. You held your position perfectly—gave me the time I needed."
Before they could celebrate further, a loud explosion rocked the building, powerful enough to make the floor beneath them shudder. The sound of shattering glass and crumbling debris filled the air, followed by the distinctive metallic ping of a grenade casing bouncing on concrete.
"Grenade!" Sera yelled, diving for cover behind a fallen filing cabinet. Her elbow hit the ground hard, sending a jolt of pain up her arm.
Another squad had arrived, announcing their presence with terrifying aggression. They weren't wasting time with subtle approaches. Bullets tore through the thin drywall as the new attackers opened fire, creating small explosions of dust and debris wherever they hit. The sound was overwhelming—a constant, ear-splitting barrage.
Max pulled Sera behind a reinforced doorway, his grip on her arm firm but not painful. "What do we do?" Sera asked, panic creeping into her voice despite her best efforts. Her hand instinctively went to her dwindling ammo supply.
Max's mind raced as he assessed their options, his expression intensely focused. The building's layout flashed through his mental map. "We'll use their aggression against them. They're overconfident, making noise. We can use that." He tapped her shoulder. "Follow me. Stay low."
He led Sera through a series of interconnected rooms, staying out of sight and using furniture as cover. The sound of footsteps and gunfire echoed through the building as the enemies searched for them, calling out to each other in short, tactical bursts.
Max stopped in a storage room and his eyes lit up as he spotted a frag grenade among the scattered supplies on the floor. He snatched it up, feeling its reassuring weight in his palm. "Here's the plan," he whispered, crouching close to Sera. "I'll throw this to flush them out. When they scatter, we take them down. Divide and conquer."
Sera nodded, gripping her UMP9 tightly. Her breathing had steadied, and her earlier panic was replaced with focused determination. She checked her magazine—half full. It would have to do.
Max pulled the pin and counted silently, timing the throw perfectly before lobbing the grenade into the hallway. The explosion was deafening in the enclosed space, the shockwave hitting them even behind cover. Plaster rained down from the ceiling, and the sound of scrambling footsteps followed immediately after—frantic, disorganized.

As the enemies ran for cover, Max and Sera stepped into the hallway in perfect synchronization and opened fire. "I'm hit," he muttered through gritted teeth, quickly pulling out a bandage from his tactical vest. Max's face was grim, but his eyes held a spark of something that might have been excitement. "Let them come. They're making a mistake. Aggression without strategy is just suicide with extra steps."
He peeked out and fired a quick, suppressive burst, forcing the enemies to retreat momentarily. Then he noticed something critical: the enemies were grouped tightly together, moving as a unit instead of spreading out.
Max's eyes lit up with predatory recognition. "They're too close to each other. Time to punish them for that rookie mistake."
With fluid motion, he switched to his grenade launcher attachment and took careful aim at the ceiling above the clustered enemies. The launcher made a distinctive thoomp sound as it fired, the projectile arcing perfectly before detonating with devastating effect. The explosion wasn't just noise and light—it sent concrete debris and shrapnel cascading down onto the enemy squad.

Max reloaded his gun methodically, checking his remaining ammunition with a practiced eye. Then he looked up at her, and his usual stoic expression softened into a genuine grin. "They made too many mistakes—sticking together like that was their downfall. But you," he pointed at her with his free hand, "you're getting good. That last kill was clean."
Her chat exploded again with renewed enthusiasm:
"Max is a genius! That grenade launcher play was PERFECT!" "Sera, you're getting better every stream! Keep it up!" "This game is giving me adrenaline just watching it." "You two should team up permanently!"
Sera chuckled and looked at Max, a hint of color rising to her cheeks that had nothing to do with exertion. "I think my fans are starting to like you more than me. My viewer count just hit a new record."
Max shrugged, but there was pride in his posture as he surveyed their handiwork. "Let's just focus on surviving. The game's not over yet." He checked the map on his HUD, noting the shrinking play area. "Circle's closing in. We should move soon."
He offered her his hand to help her up, and for a moment—just a moment—their partnership felt like something more than just a gaming alliance.
"Ready for the next fight?" he asked, voice quieter than before.
Sera took his hand and pulled herself up, her eyes meeting his with newfound confidence. "Ready."
