Chapter 97: The Fabric of Space and Time

We typically imagine space as invisible and intangible—a void—but it's actually a tangible entity with physical properties, much like a vast cloth stretched across the cosmos.
In the emptiness of a vacuum, light travels in perfect straight lines. But place an object as massive as the sun upon this cosmic fabric, and its tremendous gravitational pull distorts the space around it. When light passes near the sun, its path begins to curve—not because the light itself bends, but because the space through which it travels has been warped.
In our daily existence, we measure time in neat increments: hours, minutes, seconds. It seems straightforward, absolute. Yet time is relative, its passage intimately connected to one's position in space. When gravity warps space, it transforms time as well. And right now, as the gravitational force acting on Aidan shifted, time itself changed with it.
Gravity isn't simply a force—when matter exists, it causes space-time to deform, creating curves in the very dimensions of reality.
The gravitational field generated by Hot Rod's weapon existed for only a heartbeat. Suddenly, Aidan felt his body become weightless, suspended in that strange moment between falling and flying. Then the invisible force seized him, pulling him down with irresistible power. He crashed heavily to the ground as fragments from the obliterated target behind him peppered his armor with a metallic percussion.
"Incredible," Aidan breathed, sprawled on the grass and gazing up at the endless sky above.
"Want another shot?" Hot Rod asked, his massive frame bounding over with surprising grace.
"Not yet. Let me record the data first, then we can play."
"Alright." Hot Rod, mimicking Aidan's posture, settled beside him on the ground, both of them contemplating the vast expanse overhead.
"Speaking of which," Aidan said, turning his head with puzzled curiosity, "why don't you go hang out with Bumblebee?"
Hot Rod's fist struck the earth with frustration. "That guy's practically glued to that human, Sam. Follows him around all day like a lost puppy."
"What about Ratchet and the others?"
"They're locked in negotiations with the humans alongside Optimus Prime. Apparently, some of the proposed agreements are... problematic."
Aidan fell silent, processing this information. "I see," he finally replied. "Let me finish this work as quickly as possible. Then we'll head to Sir Edmund's place. He's got this massive castle with plenty of space to stretch out."
He extracted a data slate and connected it to his armor's port, initiating the transfer sequence. While the data streamed, Aidan addressed Hot Rod, who had transformed into his sleek sports car form. "Sir Edmund is hosting a banquet tonight, and Miss Wembly will be attending. Would you like to join us?"
"Absolutely!" The Lamborghini's headlights flashed with enthusiasm.
"I'll have them prepare a special seat for you, and I'll arrange for my company to send over some energy crystals."
At those words, Hot Rod immediately shifted back to his humanoid form. "Really? The ones from Egypt?"
"Yes, indeed." The Egyptian crystals were crafted from solar energy absorption, though they contained relatively modest power levels—more of a delicacy than sustenance. With the new Cybertronian regulations in place, Earth would undoubtedly host many more Autobots in the coming years. KSI had launched an entire line of energy crystals specifically for Autobot consumption. The affordable versions were powered by Arc Reactor energy, while the premium variants harnessed pure solar power. But even "affordable" was relative—the taste difference was significant to a Cybertronian palate. This gourmet trend was bankrupting humans with Autobot companions, though the Autobots could certainly work and earn their own income.
Once the data transfer completed, Aidan opened a shimmering portal and stepped directly onto the grounds of Sir Edmund Burton's ancestral castle. "Where's Edmund?" he asked, noting that only Cogman, the eccentric robot butler, was present.
"Ah, Mr. Magician, welcome! He's preparing for tonight's banquet," Cogman replied, turning with a theatrical flourish and gesturing toward the castle entrance.
"Please, call me Dr. Snow," Aidan said with a slightly strained smile, remaining outside. "I won't be going in just yet. How about a game of soccer?"
"Soccer? Marvelous idea!" Cogman agreed instantly, his enthusiasm unmistakable.
"Just the three of us won't be much fun..." Aidan mused, then brightened. "Let me call for reinforcements!" He pulled out his phone and approached the weathered tank nearby. "Hey, Bulldog, fancy a game of soccer?" He tapped the gray hull affectionately.
"Sounds splendid," the tank—Bulldog—replied with unexpected eagerness. His transformation was accompanied by a concerning shower of loose parts, making Aidan question whether the old warrior would survive a proper kick. "You just take it easy with Cogman, alright?"
"Why should I? That's hardly fair!" Cogman protested, pointing an accusing finger at the tank. "This old fossil will fall apart at the first touch!"
"He needs the exercise! Otherwise, his systems will deteriorate even further," Aidan shook his head as his communication device chimed.
"Hello, Dr. Snow. What's the occasion?" Bumblebee's voice came through as he juggled a ball with practiced ease.
"Bring Sam along for soccer. I've got four players here already."
"Where exactly is 'here'?" Sam's voice joined the conversation, curiosity evident.
"London, England. Care to join us?"
"No way, that's way too far," Sam protested, clearly reluctant to make the transatlantic journey.
"Too far? What do you mean, too far?" As Aidan spoke, a gleaming silver portal materialized before Sam and Bumblebee. "Come on through! I still need to round up more players!"
"...Okay then." Sam's eyes widened as he stared at the portal up close. The last time he'd seen one in Los Angeles, it had been just a fleeting glimpse.
After recruiting several more idle humans and Transformers, Aidan surveyed his assembled team.
The expansive lawn now hosted four humans and seven robots. The grass stretched like a verdant prairie—any normal game would require marathon running just to keep up. Two enormous metal goal nets stood sentinel at opposite ends of the field.
"Right then, I'll equip each of you with a protective suit so you don't get kicked into the afterlife," Aidan announced, distributing three gleaming silver suits to the humans. The new arrivals included Bumblebee and Sam, Agent Simmons and Captain Lennox, plus the inventor Cade accompanied by the samurai Autobot, Drift. Once the three humans had donned their battle armor, Aidan outlined the rules.
"The rules are simple: no malicious attacks on players—especially you, Bulldog—and absolutely no weapons fire. Kick the ball into the net to score, stay within the boundaries, and that's it! For fairness, we humans can use the energy boost functions in our suits."
"Any questions? If not, let's begin!" The group buzzed with anticipation, no objections raised. After a quick team division, Aidan and the others launched into their impromptu soccer match on the castle grounds. The ball was crafted from specialized plastic composite, perfectly sized for both human and Autobot players.
When Sir Edmund returned to his castle by car, he paused in amazement at the sight before him: Transformers and armored humans racing across his pristine lawn in chaotic pursuit of a soccer ball. Sam currently controlled possession, with several towering robots in hot pursuit, while the gray tank Bulldog and the black-and-blue samurai Drift stood as imposing goalkeepers at either end of the field.
The game had begun, and the castle grounds had never seen such extraordinary entertainment.
