Around the device, space itself still rippled with residual effects. The high-level energy field that protected the Tesseract during operation created visible distortions in the air, like heat mirages rising from summer asphalt. Only equivalent energy levels or weapons derived from the cube itself could penetrate such defenses the kind of force that could level city blocks with casual ease.

Street Level - Near Stark Tower
The scene at ground level was like something from a very expensive car show crossed with a science fiction convention. Several pristine vehicles had arranged themselves in a rough circle, their paint jobs gleaming despite the ash and debris that coated everything else in the immediate area. The most impressive was a massive red and blue semi-truck that looked like it had rolled off a movie set, complete with flame decals and chrome that caught the late afternoon light.

"Oh, oh, sorry," Tony said, taking several quick steps backward while holding up his hands in universal surrender. The smell was indeed memorable part organic decay, part alien biochemistry, with undertones of digestive acids that had been trying to dissolve sophisticated technology for the better part of an hour.
Before anyone could comment further on Tony's unfortunate aromatic situation, another figure descended from the sky with considerably more dramatic flair.
"Aidan, have you seen my brother Loki?" Thor asked as he touched down, Mjolnir spinning in his grip with barely contained energy. Lightning still flickered around the hammer's head, residual charge from his recent battles painting brief afterimages across everyone's retinas.
"I have. I can send him over to you," Aidan nodded, then gestured skyward with casual authority. Red sparks began forming another portal, this one positioned directly above their gathering. "Catch."
In the distance, Loki had just begun to congratulate himself on successfully escaping the immediate vicinity of his brother's righteous fury when the ground simply disappeared beneath his feet. One moment he was standing on solid rooftop concrete, the next he was plummeting through a dimensional rift with his cape billowing around him like the wings of a very surprised bat.
BOOM!... Cough cough!
The God of Mischief's impact with Manhattan asphalt was neither graceful nor dignified. He lay stunned for several seconds, his usually immaculate appearance now thoroughly disheveled, before slowly raising his head to survey his new circumstances.
He was surrounded by Earth's mightiest heroes, several impossibly large robots, and one very irritated brother. The l situation could charitably be described as 'suboptimal.'
"I think we can have a glass of wine now," he said with forced levity, his smile carrying all the conviction of someone trying to laugh off a death sentence.
"I'll take them away first. Remember to call me when you want to leave," Aidan said, waving dismissively as he prepared to extract his mechanical allies from what was rapidly becoming a very crowded street corner. Sparks began forming beneath his feet as he floated back toward the Wanderer's control chamber.
The massive mecha descended through the air with grace, its bulk casting shadows across the assembled heroes. Optimus Prime immediately leaped upward, his transformation beginning even as he rose toward the opening chest cavity.
"Hulk, hurry up!" Aidan's voice carried clearly from a new portal that had appeared at ground level.
"ROAR!" The Hulk's response was characteristically direct. He launched himself through the dimensional rift with enough force to crack the pavement beneath his feet, disappearing into whatever destination Aidan had prepared for Earth's angriest defender.
"This ability is really convenient," Tony observed, his engineer's mind already working through the implications of casual dimensional manipulation. Magic was looking more attractive by the minute.
"He seems to have taken the scepter and the Tesseract," Natasha said quietly, her spy's instincts automatically cataloging the strategic implications of such powerful artifacts in private hands.
"Maybe you can try to get them back," Loki suggested with sudden cheerfulness, his smile carrying the kind of malicious amusement that came from watching others contemplate impossible tasks.
"Shut up!" Thor's response was immediate and percussive his fist connecting with Loki's jaw with enough force to rattle windows in the surrounding buildings.
"Has anyone ever tried shawarma?" Tony asked suddenly, his mind already moving past cosmic artifacts and dimensional warfare toward more immediate concerns. "There's a shawarma joint about two blocks from here. I don't know what it is, but I want to try it."
"Of course, but I think you seem to have forgotten someone," Natasha said, scanning the assembled group with the thoroughness of someone whose survival often depended on accurate headcounts.
"Who is it?" Tony asked, following her gaze as he tried to identify the missing team member.
"It's me!" Hawkeye's voice carried from above as he rappelled down the side of a building, his tactical harness and climbing gear marking him as someone who still preferred conventional transportation methods. His boots hit the pavement with practiced precision, and he immediately began coiling his rope with the efficiency of long habit.
"Oh, sorry, I forgot about you."
"I can eat more shawarma," Hawkeye replied with good humor, his smile carrying the easy camaraderie of someone who'd helped save the world and lived to joke about it.
"We won," Captain America said softly, his voice carrying a wonder that spoke of someone who'd seen too many battles end in pyrrhic victory or outright defeat.

Good thing they built this place in the middle of nowhere, he thought, watching as thousands of people celebrated humanity's survival with the kind of joy usually reserved for major holidays and sporting victories.
It had been a very long day.
