CHAPTER 165: The God of Desire ( PLAT )

The breach was opening again.
A thousand meters from Challenger Deep, the PPDC monitoring ship bobbed on calm waters that wouldn't stay calm much longer. Inside the cramped monitoring room, technicians stared at screens showing seismic readings and thermal signatures from the ocean floor. When the alarm went off, nobody jumped - they'd been expecting it. The pattern was too consistent now to surprise anyone.
"Contact confirmed. We've got movement in the Deep."
The commander leaned over the displays, watching a red dot pulse like a heartbeat on the sonar. Ripples spread outward in perfect circles, getting stronger with each passing second.
"Alert all coastal bases. Get fighters in the air and start running the classification algorithms." His voice was steady, but his hands were white-knuckled on the edge of the console. "And someone get me a trajectory prediction. I want to know where this thing's going before it knows."
Seven thousand feet below them, the ocean floor was tearing itself apart.
The breach looked like a wound in reality - magma-red cracks spreading through rock that shouldn't be able to crack, seawater boiling into steam wherever it touched the dimensional rift. Then something moved in that impossible light. Something huge and dark and wrong, pulling itself through from whatever nightmare dimension the Precursors called home.
The Kaiju that emerged was different from the others. Its body was midnight black with electric-blue bioluminescent stripes running along its flanks like neon tattoos. The patterns were almost beautiful - organic swirls and geometric shapes that seemed deliberate, designed. Its eyes caught the dim light and threw it back with an intelligence that made the hair stand up on the back of your neck.
This one was smart. You could see it in the way it paused, looking around, taking stock of its surroundings before committing to a direction. Then it started swimming toward the surface with long, powerful strokes.
The alert reached Hong Kong Shatterdome within ninety seconds.
The Wei Tang triplets were already gearing up when the base-wide announcement crackled through the speakers: "Attention all personnel. We have Kaiju emergence in the South China Sea. Mark-4 Jaeger Crimson Typhoon, prepare for immediate deployment. Target is Category-3, codename 'Otachi.' Estimated time to landfall: forty-seven minutes."
The brothers exchanged looks - equal parts excitement and nerves. They'd been training on the upgraded systems for weeks, running sim after sim until they could pilot Crimson Typhoon in their sleep. But simulations weren't the same as having a real monster trying to rip your head off.
"This is it," Cheung Wei said quietly. "Everything we've been working for."
"We're ready," Jin Wei replied, though his hands were shaking slightly as he checked his neural interface connections.
Hu Wei just grinned. "Let's go kill a god."
South China Sea, 47 minutes later.
The sky was wrong - that sickly gray color that came before major storms, except there were no clouds. Just oppressive humidity and air that felt like it was holding its breath.
The water was dead calm. No fish, no birds, nothing. Every living thing with survival instincts had already fled the area, sensing something unnatural approaching.
Then the shadow appeared.
It moved fast for something so massive, a darkness beneath the surface that grew larger and larger until you could make out individual features. When it finally surfaced, the thing that emerged looked like someone's fever dream of what an apex predator should be.
"ROOOOOAAAAR!"
The sound physically hurt to hear - not just loud, but wrong on some fundamental level. Cameras on the news helicopters caught every detail as Otachi rose from the sea. The bone-crest on its head looked like a crown of thorns, the bioluminescent patterns pulsing in rhythm with its breathing. Its claws were ridiculous - easily twenty feet long, curved like scimitars, sharp enough to carve through solid rock like butter.
One of the camera operators whispered "Jesus Christ" before remembering he was broadcasting live to two billion people.
Otachi waded toward shore with a grace that something that size had no right to possess. Every movement was fluid, deliberate, economical. This wasn't some mindless beast thrashing toward land - this was a precision instrument built for murder.
Shatterdome Base, Bay Three.
Aidan stood with the triplets in front of Crimson Typhoon's massive feet, looking up at the machine they'd rebuilt from the ground up.
"Category-3 Kaiju, codename Otachi," he said, keeping his voice level and professional. "You've been training for this. The simulations say you're ready. I believe you're ready. But this isn't about just winning anymore."
He held up his fist. "Everyone's watching. The PPDC brass, the other bases, the politicians who control our funding. We need to show them what this design can do. Show them that speed and precision beats raw power. Show them why they should give us everything we need to build more like this."
"So no pressure, right?" Hu Wei joked, but his voice was tight.
"We won't let you down," Cheung Wei said, pressing his fist against Aidan's. "All that work you put in - we're gonna make it count."
"The finishing blow's mine," Hu Wei added, touching knuckles. "I've been waiting for this."
"Our trinity can do this," Jin Wei finished. "We were built for this moment."
Aidan nodded, not trusting himself to speak. He watched them climb into the head module, their practiced movements synchronized after years of fighting together.
"Tuantuan, seal them in and run final diagnostics," he called out.
The AI's holographic form appeared. "Affirmative. Commencing neural handshake initialization."
The sounds of Crimson Typhoon coming alive echoed through Bay Three - mechanical locks engaging, hydraulic systems pressurizing, the Arc Reactor spinning up to combat power. The head module descended and locked into place with a satisfying CLANG that you felt in your chest.
Then the feet moved. Small adjustments at first, just testing systems, before the whole massive frame shifted its weight onto the crawler platform.
The base erupted into coordinated chaos - technicians running through checklists, engineers monitoring power readings, support crews guiding the crawler toward the deployment gates. Everyone had done this before, but it never stopped being terrifying.
Bay Three's massive doors ground open, and Crimson Typhoon stepped out into daylight.
Four heavy-lift helicopters descended, their cables hooking onto the reinforced hardpoints on the Jaeger's back. The triplets felt the sudden lurch as their 1,722-ton war machine left the ground.
"Crimson Typhoon airborne," Cheung Wei reported. "All systems green. We're ready to engage."
Through the command center monitors, Aidan watched the Jaeger disappear toward the horizon, carrying three brothers toward a fight that would either prove everything he'd built or kill them in the process.
On his private screen, he pulled up the live feed from the news helicopters.
Otachi was close to shore now, and seeing it in high definition made his stomach drop. The classification called it Category-3, but categories didn't capture the sheer presence of this thing. It moved like a dancer, all coiled power and lethal grace. The patterns on its hide weren't random - they formed shapes that almost looked like writing in some alien language.
"'God of Desire,'" he muttered, reading the translation of its codename. "Yeah, that fits. Beautiful and terrifying in equal measure."
The feed switched to show Crimson Typhoon approaching from the north, helicopters releasing their cables as the Jaeger dropped toward the water.
SPLASH.
Waves exploded outward as 1,722 tons of metal and reactor energy hit the ocean. Crimson Typhoon steadied itself, water streaming off its armor, every sensor locked onto the approaching target.
In the cockpit, Jin Wei zoomed in on Otachi using the head-mounted telescope. "Target acquired. Range: eight hundred meters and closing fast."
"Disable its mobility first," Cheung Wei ordered. "Hit the legs."
The left palm opened, energy building in the converted plasma cannon. White light intensified until it was painful to look at directly.
BOOM.
The plasma bolt caught Otachi's front leg mid-stride, flash-burning through scales and muscle. Blue blood sprayed into the air, most of it vaporized by the superheated plasma before it could contaminate the water.
Otachi screamed - a sound that carried equal parts rage and pain.
"Hit it again!"
BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.
Plasma fire hammered into the charging Kaiju, each shot precise and devastating. But Otachi was fast - way faster than something that size had any right to be. It dodged, weaved, absorbed hits that would have crippled other monsters and kept coming.
Crimson Typhoon backpedaled, maintaining optimal firing range while systematically targeting Otachi's legs. Blue blood mixed with seawater, the ocean churning into toxic soup.
But Otachi's eyes never lost their cunning gleam. It was learning with every shot, adapting its approach, waiting for an opening.
The triplets saw it too. "It's setting us up," Jin Wei warned. "This thing's way smarter than the sims suggested."
"Noted," Cheung Wei replied. "Switching to close combat. Let's see how smart it is with our claws in its throat."
Crimson Typhoon stopped retreating. The energy claws extended to full length, glowing with barely contained power.
Otachi's lips pulled back, revealing rows of teeth like industrial drill bits.
Then both titans charged.
