Johnathan Teeple

Man that summon merging spell developed by Wrangle would be incredibly useful to Torment. I love the idea of fusing Love and Hate or Fear and Rage.

Richard Loveless

I bet the maven power up is similar to Liz blood doping. No consequences.

Konner Morris

I'm hoping that Maven's effective doping has a cost associated. Would really hate the whole, yea I get a super power boost, and then no cost afterwords. Getting a super buff should bring with it a similar heal debuff from a significant heal. Like she's now paralyzed for 24 months or something from overestimating her entire body. I am happy that we got to see a MAL going all out against a foe that fights back.

Smit

I can't remember the stuff Aiden was doing at 25 with perfect clarity. I'm saying +5 to the non-'Ascencers' especially with the major support group they have on call and how beaten they can go down to and just get healed up instantly. To clarify +5 when not facing their equivalent. As in a Matt at 25 should never be at a future tier 30 Matt. But a Matt defeating a tier 30 General on the opposite team with all the stuff they have going for them? IMO, yes. I feel like we need ways to specify like skill vs rank, honestly. Might be where we are getting caught up. If Aiden is A30. (Tier 30) A is Ascender Tier. Any rank and file are R as in regular. T is trained but not Ascender. So basically what I'm trying to say is a A25 MLA could definitely beat a A27-29 as a 3v1. Maeve is acting way above her Tier right now and was basically being toted around as a higher rank. And Matt could handle her. If we're saying a A25 Matt can do a A27-28 or Maeve, I'd like to postulate he could do a T29 War and win. But I guess that's how I'm perceiving it. Also should've clarified that it will most likely get harder and harder to do so because thresholds exist and +5 won't happen at 35 or 40 or 45. So I guess +4 might be easier to sell? Idk if it's all about pushing yourselves at the tier you're at MLA could be either as strong as an equivalent Aiden their tier in different ways at the end of the war or a little weaker. Due to how they get training from the entirety of the groups. I'm also saying MLA need their gear as Ascenders to do so. Kinda apart of the whole kit, y'know?

SodaBoBomb

Well thanks for being civil. You think they should be able to punch up 5 TIERS?!? Nah. I'm pretty sure the most they ever did even in Rifts was 4. You're massively underselling the difference between Tiers. Maybe, they could punch up 5 Tiers against ONE enemy who wasn't prepared and had counters ready for them. But not an entire army of Tier 30s along with Tier 30 Elites. Also I'm pretty sure their first mission was just MLA vs at least a few hundred Tier 27s. They CAN punch up a bit. But they aren't always going to since the point of keeping them at Tier 25 is to let them dominate Tier 25 fights. Plus, the higher they punch up the more likely they'll have to reveal parts of their kit they'd rather keep secret. Technically, Shadow could've warped the whole lot of them out of this fight immediately, but she would've had to use her Tier 25 Talent to do so, which would've given the enemy Intel on said Talent. They're fighting armies and Elites specifically geared to counter them, at or slightly above Tier, all while at a handicap.

Smit

I think that if MLA started punching the same as DW at this point in their journey, they would be hunted down way fiercer than they have right now. (Moderation Take, imo) MLA being ascenders should always blow non ascender tier out of the water. (Opposite Take, why they can't be weak, imo) In my opinion over inflating people's points and saying that they think Matt should be blowing everything out of space is just that. Over inflating their point. I THINK their point is they should be blowing any non +5s out of the water. In this chapter they were explained that they could have did exactly that to Meave but needed to defend the ship. I don't think if reasonable people think of a good story with compelling power fantasy is attempting to do a One Punch Man is going to continue to call it compelling power fantasy. Good comedy for sure, but not a fight for the multiverse that doesn't just end with hijinx and one [Manabeam] (Overpowered Take, imo) The point of talents in this book series is to show everyone is unique and you'll see differing power sets, with also having statistics in their character screen. Also it's mainly a cultivation story which I love. That being said in cultivation stories there are heaven sent geniuses. Aiden is either a raw talent or pure training HSG. Didn't other factions want to go to war purely based on Aiden in the past? They finally went full send when L&S ascended and saw they might not keep up. Confirming so early MLA could be a major thorne in their side in this timeline could have major ramifications. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Maeve was specifically told to assassinate them due to their past and the chance they could be +5s. I do think +5 is a healthy punch up showing the underdog in fights they probably shouldn't be in. Due to how authors have to work on patreon, releasing chapter by chapter, they stress me the hell out because of the forethought needed. I haven't seen a single retcon. Meaning they're doing an amazing job. Due to that nature I think that if Mantis made MLA stand out too much before any major gear that it would be like a boulder downhill. Mantis is a great author, and knows the ramifications and how it will speed up the story significantly. If they have the plot in hand, which it looks like they do, I see it going flawlessly as it has. I see both sides here have points but also got petty because they were trying to tell their side and the other was trying their best to discredit the other. The strawmans were funny though.

David Lund

Ignoring the fact that C. Mantis needs to write 10,000+ interesting word to get people to read instead of being 100% accurate on his worldbuilding even if it is boring. It is quite clear the as you go from a normal soldier, to an officer, to an elite, to an ascender, your defense goes up much faster than your offense. This was clearly reiterated in this chapter.

Jake Kimmerly

"They win every fight" you said that, apparently without considering the implications ETA: The story has told us multiple times that DW is an anomaly multiple times explicitly why are we comparing actual characters to Goku

Evernap

Genuinely they just crossed the Ascender threshold. Also have to remember all the Ascender info we have is basically the propaganda that the various governments use to make the populace less afraid of losing wars. Plus most of the time spent on the path of Ascension is leveling not honing every single ability. Since once being free of the shackles of the Path they can broaden their repertoire of skills and settle down and expand every skill. Stories are told about Ascenders biggest wins not the time they stole some supplies.

Evernap

I hope you have heard of the mantra "there is always someone better". DW could be the best at his level/levels. I personally see him as someone who just smokes everyone in this lower realm when speaking of his domain use/ability. But like superman he can only be in one place at a time. I don't see his existence as an error.

Evernap

This is an odd take. They took significant resources from an enemy. If you have worked with logistics in any capacity this causes huge issues. Every delay stacks. Imagine the line of planets. First it begins with the lost manpower at the supply depot, the loss of resources, the loss of storage, diverting supplies from farther depots to the planets, the materials to rebuild the depot, the time to ship the depot materials, the cost of materials, labor to build, sourcing competent workers. The whole time the empire is pressuring each planet. They wouldn't even need to conquer each. Just cost the planets resources so they would be unable to sally out. Remember wars are fought with supplies more than manpower.

Evernap

She is limited by the same skill pool. Between x amount off Liz's only one cast of an ability makes it unavailable to everyone else.

Evernap

@Tibstrike Too bad? Do you just read the final chapter in books or something? What makes a story is a beginning, middle and an end. You are reading/experiencing a journey.

Matt H

I have never used the word infinite because that has very specific implications that I'm well aware of. I don't appreciate you trying to use it as a straw man @Jake

Blightdad

Can’t Liz have clones as support helper?

Tibstrike

It'd be super cool to see that yeah! Too bad the author is continuing to slow walk the MCs being fully kitted out so he can maintain tension and write difficult fights in a really transparent way!

Ryan Romano

yeah, like after this Maven is out of the war for years with her domain fractured or something, or it forces her to go up a level or two and takes her off the 25 battlefields, maybe both, like they stuffed her with essence and then stretched her domain to keep her at 25 and then have to let her level or she shatters her domain, but it also incapacitates her for decades

Jake Kimmerly

Large amount and infinite are different things. Don't know how you're deciding that MLA are weaker than the "average ascender" when the only context we have for that is L&S and Duke Waters.

SodaBoBomb

Don't be a dick

Blake Noyes

You’re simply wrong and being idiotic here

Alex

Makes sense that Drifters ships usually fall apart the second she lands xD they're probably only ever held together by her talent and the moment she stops it'll all fail at once

SodaBoBomb

DW is an anomaly even among Ascenders. Even still, this is his second war? At least. He has all of his gear and skills, and has had them for awhile, plus all the experience. This is MLA's first war, and they don't have all their stuff or skills customized. I do agree that DW is perhaps a bit too strong. But no one ever said that MLA had to be the strongest things in the universe. I know a lot of progression stories would have Mat fighting the Emlerors by now and punching up 25 Tiers, but this isn't that sort of story.

Matt H

Like I said, we're not going to see eye to eye on this at the end of the day. Many of you seem to be approaching this discussion from the perspective that MLA and L&S fought off thousands of enemies, completed their objectives, and lived to tell the tale. That is objectively true and objectively impressive. On the other hand, DW does the same thing with people, not just monsters, 4 tiers higher than him. By the definitions laid out in the story MLA are absolutely Ascenders. However, if you can't admit that their prowess isn't remotely close to DW's (again, accounting for differences in their tiers and Domains) then you're not engaging this discussion honestly. The difference between DW and MLA appears to be about as great as between MLA and your average person. And that begs the question, is DW that much better than the already rare Ascender? Are MLA that much worse than the "average" Ascender? Or, as is more likely, is it some combination of both? Which all leads back to one of my other comments: that DW was, narratively, a mistake because he set the bar too high for what Ascenders can do and we haven't seen any other Ascenders who aren't new in action to compare against to figure out what's actually normal. Edit: It's silly to think that an Ascender whose Talents and Domain involve being (pseudo) Endless should be able to fight large amount of enemies?

Jake Kimmerly

I'm telling you you don't understand storytelling because you seem to think that every Ascender should be able to fight an infinite number of at-tier enemies and that's a silly thing to think.

SodaBoBomb

They also did it with a handicap of not showing all their cards.

adam1

A group of 6 people (including Matt) have just killed thousands of enemy combatants in minutes, while being focused on defense of a soft target. Matt did most of the killing. Maven's unsustainable power up was the only reason this fight wasn't over instantly. This whole chapter was an example of Ascenders crushing a trap meant for them. Matt will shine more when the fights can be drawn out, such as sieging enemy forts.

SodaBoBomb

I just don't know what people expect when they say they "don't seem like Ascenders" They just fought a planets worth of enemies of their own Tier, then got ambushed by thousands more people of their own Tier, along with a few dozen Elites and one powerhouse, all of whom were specifically set up to counter Ascenders. All those fodder enemies still matter. Even Duke Waters could get overwhelmed by sheer numbers eventually. Normal people cannot deal with thousands of enemies all at their same Tier. Even people like Stick and Stone, who are Elites themselves, probably wouldn't be able to handle thousands of enemies their own Tier by themselves. No one but Ascenders could have gotten out of that ambush. They're strategic level assets, you can send an Ascender instead of an Army. But they aren't invincible.

Matt H

At this point I doubt we'll ever really see eye to eye on this, but I'll try to explain my position anyway. The early parts of this story set up a few, basic premises. First, Ascenders are the best. Full stop. They win every fight unless they're fighting another Ascender equivalent fighter. And to support this idea we were introduced to DW. Someone who can fight *armies* despite being up to 4 tiers lower. Second, Matt's talent is broken. He's supposed to be able to do more and for longer than anyone else and it's not even supposed to be close. Put those two facts together and yes, you get this vision of Matt showing up to a fight endlessly casting spells until everyone is dead. Is that enjoyable to read? For some yes, for most, probably not for too long. So instead we seem to have gotten a version of Matt that, at least compared to how Ascenders were initially introduced in the form of DW, appears to more of an "Ascender-Lite". He's generally better than people at his tier, but not by an utterly overwhelming amount. This is disappointing because it feels like the implicit promise given at the beginning of the story hasn't been kept. It's especially irritating because there's a relatively simple route that could've been taken that's already been established. Namely, have Matt (and others) be treated as higher than their actual tier and/or have them routinely fight in higher tier battlefields. Narratively you can still get your close fights that can go either way, but you can also write the occasional chapter demonstrating Matt's true power by having him fight at-tier opponents. And I can only speak for myself, but I'm NOT comparing Matt's abilities to DW's abilities. I'm comparing Matt's performance against his enemies to DW's performance against his enemies. Of course DW is stronger than Matt, he has his Aspect and is 6 tiers higher. But Matt is fighting against people with just Concepts and Intents at his tier while DW is fighting against people who also have their Aspects and are 4 tiers higher. Finally, as for not understanding story telling? Look back at the comments from the very last chapter and you'll see how I was predicting that Maven wouldn't be killed specifically because she's been a named and established opponent and killing her this early would be surprising. Giving criticism doesn't necessarily mean that something is bad or unenjoyable. It simply means that there's the potential for improvement. Why would people like myself continue to subscribe to Mantis if we didn't still enjoy the story overall?

WierdWebLurker

Rolling up with an army against less than 10 exhausted opponents, going even with one of them while the others annihilate your army, then being forced to extract with heavy wounds while your enemies get away with a planet's worth of loot? I certainly hope that's not how Ascenders are meant to fight.

Forestfire

The dream of Matt floating untouchable in his CPA and annihilating whole armies with OP beams of mana from his hands would be great for two chapters then we would all get board and read something else

IWannaBeATiger

Exactly give Matt his power armour and he cuts Maven in half on that first attack or when she tried to grab the sword

alex bozdog

5v1? first of all they all had to fight defensive or loose the payload. 2 they were forced to block for the ship while Maeven could dodge, 3 she's on the equivalent of the two Chimeras they lost to as Quill and Torch at T21 except she had a lot more practice at war, 3 she was boosted to all hell and probably will have drawbacks, 4 there were never more then 2v1 against Maeven, and even then Liz was never sending all her clones for her. There were also a couple hundred other elite T25 sect people there not to mention they were just coming from a mission and low on Will while Maeven started at full and probably fully taped out unlike any one of them (except maybe Bullwark). They are NOT Duke Waters, yes Duke Waters could instantly win any fight with 1-1 million of his own Tier, but he's a T31 who beats T35 Ascenders or Ascender Teams, he is not normal and not a benchmark for what Team Zero should be!! Also, they won, Maeven lost the fight and had to be extracted or she would have died.

Snugglebadger

When you get ambushed by a group put together specifically to counter your abilities and kill you, and not only escape alive but take a lot of the enemy with you, that's 100% a win.

Lorevi Q

The maven power up feels like it should have significant consequences otherwise it devalues the whole idea of ascender. Not just for her but for whoever facilitated it. If it's possible to temporarily power up elites to above ascender level then everyone would just field teams of suicide soldiers to kill off enemy ascenders.

Gjim

I agree with that statement, and would love to see how close she was to biting the dust as it were.

MinE

Also the prince and princesses from that pather war. I'm especially interested in what happened with the Queen who rebelled againter her father and joined the enemy faction.

Blightdad

Need Maven POV

MikeL

Seriously whenever I see this I am always amazed. I don’t know how Mantis does such a large word count. 2 chapters a week or more with like 5000 words. Most authors chapters are much shorter.

Tibstrike

Best part is Maven isn't an Ascender!

Jake Kimmerly

It's so funny how little some of the commenters understand story telling

adam1

Maven is also critically injured, plus whatever side effects she'll have from getting boosted in power.

IWannaBeATiger

Tbf MLA are still waiting on their custom gear. Stick Matt in his power armour and he probably cuts Maven in half if she tried to grab his blade

Alex

I like the word count. Of course its a special number, but I wish you would start including word counts in every chapter again. They always make me happy.

Kelraxus

A thing people seem to be missing in regards to ascender power levels with MLA is they havent gotten all their ascender gear yet, duke waters may be an outlier but light and shadow and all the elites and enemies have their whole kit, they were getting prepared before the war happened, MLA have gotten some upgrades but nothing close to the full ascender kit, even in the fight with the animal collective they may not have won, but punched above where any of the other powers expected them too, since the path deprives them of so many resources especially near the end

Rui Lourenço

They got the supplies. Those are incredibly important. And the other powers all have a single Ascender at most. The ambush was not a failure. Also, the war is not fought at a scale where healing cooldown are *that* relevant. It takes months to travel through battle fields.

SodaBoBomb

Don't listen to half these comments, idk what people expect. They seem to want Mat to just show up, nuke everything out of existence by simply blinking at it, then fly home. This fight was great, I think the power levels are perfectly fine other than Duke Waters *just a little bit* OP. But even with him, people forget his not Tier 25 and he has his full Domain. Of course he's better than MHA.

SodaBoBomb

Not quite. They got a verifiable shitload of the enemies supplies, and they got them intact, meaning they can use them themselves. Also, even without Melinda the time warping of their Rift base would have them back in action far faster than the enemy would expect. Plus, only Shadow, Torment, Stick, Stone, and Aster because of the healing cool down she'll be on, took bad damage. Other than Willpower expenditure, the rest are in good shape. Mat didn't take any wounds his Regen can't handle. But the fact is that they DO have Melinda, meaning this was a win.

KingGoomba

You have to take into account that Melinda is part of the calculations in their strategy. Also not many of them imo are way too damaged to be at the healing cool down other than Shadow. They also for sure put Maven out of commission for a long time

MikeL

I think he is one of the most requested ones. So maybe Mantis is saving him for last.

mitchell kaiser

Loved the chapter great way to start the weekend. Thanks Mantis!

David Bean

Well, that was definitely a heart pounding one. Very exciting and tense. Glad Matt made the smart choice though. I know that was hard for him, but something definitely would have gone wrong if he just went straight for the kill on Maven.

Aaron Hardin

This is the dreaded escort quest in RPGs, where you cant proactively take out the stronger enemies the way you want since the numerous weaker enemies take out your weakling of an escort while you are distracted. The Ascenders ran away because the ship and supplies that were extremely valuable were about to be destroyed, they were in position to beat Maven the Dao Child and the entire army with her if they fought on, but that was not their main focus.

Anime Problem

Matt just straight overpowering Maven is going to put her and the sects on their back foot they intended to harass and take the Ascenders out of action for a while with Maven as boosted as she was plus the army so I'm guessing that their next strategy is going to be trying to cut Matt of from the rest of the team or hitting him as hard as possible to take him out of the fight early they don't know he has a purely physical cultivation so without dedicated physical talent boots or just buffing only physical no one his tier is going to out match him in a physical contest and he's got all the magic he needs so I'm curious what the other GPs will do next to target him

Michael Olson

Maybe I'm remembering wrong but didn't maven and co get there and set up the trap a lot faster than they should have? I thought the intel had them much further away

Magisch

They didn't really win this, did they? Maybe this whole thing needs followup to appreciate the effect, but from my PoV the empire lost big in this and the only reason it's not a crippling loss is because of Melinda. Without Melinda, the empire would have had all of their ascenders out of comission right now, possibly long enough for the other GPs to easily mop them up. Even with Melinda, it seems like Matt overstrained himself a lot stopping that Javelin, and will have to lay low for a while. While we have no confirmation that Maven's bullshit buff won't have her back on the battlefield laughing at the idiot ascenders getting injured within days.

Michael Olson

I think i agree with you about the domain, i remember something about viewing his domain workings as the will of the ocean and something akin to a natural law that no one could hope to contest. So instead of contesting wills wirh DW, they're facing the concept of the ocean

Stephan Bucher

Thanks for the chapter, I loved it; also I love General Darrow realizing that MAL are an incredible resource, if only because they follow orders. Having a team of Ascenders that you can count on to follow orders, seems to drastically change the calculus for battle/war. I can’t wait for the next chapter! I also really want to see Maven get fucking wiped, you’ve done a good job of making me hate her. <3

Matt H

Yes, I am very much aware of the nature of escort missions (especially when the VIP travels at an annoying faster than a walk, slower than a run pace). And while that's certainly playing some role Ascenders are just supposed to be *better*; they're supposed to be able to do anything/everything. I think back to one of the chapters at the T10 tournament when they were talking to Lila and she was speculating that MLA would probably end up on more reactionary/clean up sort of missions and seeing how their skillsets have developed she's absolutely right. Of the Empire's three sets of Ascenders I'd say MLA are easily the most suited for something like this: a defensive engagement trying to protect a single location/target against a large number of enemies. So this is the sort of situation where they should shine compared to L&S and DW. In the battle, Darrow thought Stick, Stone and Torment were sufficient to take over a task that Matt, an Ascender, had been handling in the fight. You can look at that one of two ways: "Wow! It took 3 of the best non-Ascender Elites to handle what a single Ascender was doing!" or "Wow! It only took 3 non-Ascender Elites to handle what a single Ascender was doing?" Maybe we, as readers, are supposed to look at it from the first perspective, but DW has set the bar for Ascenders so high that I think a lot of us have the second perspective.

Christopher McCoin

Sure hope we get a Wednesday chapter showing the perspective of the guy who insulted Matt's parents to get his own concept. It would be fun to watch him poo his pants after realizing Matt is Quill.

Wool

“…with the turelly massive amount of goods..” [truely]?

Sezra_

Thanks a bunch! ʕ•ᴥ•ʔゞ゛

brennon Petersen

Tftc!

Serran

I somewhat get where you are coming from but I actually have to disagree. You ever play escort missions in video games? I mean the ones where your VIP (Very Incompetent Protectee) runs around directly into fire? This is basically that. Not quite on that level but their ship was a very big target with a threat profile below any of the Ascenders. For L&S as well as MLA the difference is mostly academic. DW on the other hand had a Surprise Bossfight after the final level of Mocks, starting with a scripted debuff. Yeah, it is annoying to have to beat them on a timer but eminently doable. On the buffing of the Ascenders, 'all' they have to figure out what DW is doing to enhance is Domain. My impression of his comment about going deeper was that he figured out a way to have the Domain be enhanced when he is more in sync with it. Maybe having it enhance itself.

Matt H

You raise an interesting point. Wars are won and lost by troop reserves along with logistics. And yet, I find it hard to see killing thousands of T25 soldiers (who take a lot of time and resources to develop) as much of a victory when the Great Powers are all SO LARGE. It kind of feels like it's a drop out of an endless bucket. Maybe that's something Mantis can think about moving forward: finding some way to show that losses like this actually matter or can have an effect in the long run. Or, maybe losses like this actually don't matter. Would be interesting either way to figure out what the answer is.

Wool

“…but Matt was wholly unaffected thanks to his lighting-skewed…” Should be [lightning]?

Michael Storms

Found another one of those blue highlighted links. ( harpoon. His) at the part Matt is catching the harpoon.

William Johnson

More 5001 v 5, remember that there was also an army. Maven was really only fighting one of them at a time until the end, at which time she started getting her butt kicked.

Kelly Bryan

Also, Team Zero was protecting a ship and a huge load of goods. Their objective was to escape an overwhelming ambush without their weakest assets taking catastrophic damage. Darrow mentions they could still crush them, notice that everytime Maven got a chance she immediately attacked their ship but they were still able to escape.

Markus

Remember that it wasn't 5v1. It was 5 - exhaustion - escort quest vs 1 + an army + prepared trap + well rested

Shyann Hutchinson

Don't forget this was a defensive battle not an offensive battle like Duke Waters. You have to take different steps and react differently when you have something to protect vs when you can go all out.

Sean McClain

The sects are probably going to start to fear Matt like Duke Waters, where it's flee on sight rather then fight. He took on their boosted 'Ascender' directly and match her, no boosts required. He was also tied and weekend but they might not know that. Unlimited Mana is really a scary thing to fight.

C_Mantis

I dont like nerfing so worry not.

Matt H

I know you probably can't/won't respond, but I would hope you go the route of buffing other Ascender-level characters instead of nerfing or killing DW.

C_Mantis

DW was made too strong but I have things in place to help but if I say anything more than Im aware of the issue I spoil it.

Jana

I’m of two minds about this chapter. I totally get that having Maven Ass handed to her on their first encounter would be the wrong choice. She fought for far longer, has an Army that includes Battleships for support and Team Zero has resources bound by protecting their cargo. Also a long Term Nemesis is something nice to have. But, holy shit would I have loved to see her simply getting smashed. Hell, I would have taken the whole 7777 words just describing her getting trashed. I guess I really don’t like her.. also I like my MCs quite well into the OP so I might not be the best judge.

Matt H

It's chapters like this that make me think the existence of Duke Waters in this story was a mistake. His very existence seemingly devalues the prowess of MLA and L&S. Just compare their recent missions. On the surface they seem similar: both completed their missions while surviving a trap/ambush. However, on one side it was TWO full teams of Ascenders paired with some of the best Elite supports the Empire can provide while fighting at-tier enemies. On the other side it's just DW who's also fighting up 4 tiers. Not only that, MLA and L&S only managed to drive off their Elite opponent while DW managed to kill multiple of his. Part of the issue is that we've only seen the Empire's Ascenders in action, but MLA and L&S once again feel much more like slightly better Elites than they do Ascenders.

Otter Pops

Maven better be out of the war for a few years at the minimum

Tommy

Did Allie make it back onto the ship though?!

Derze

Nice. They managed to leave without anyone dying. I call it a win

0x0F

Don't forget that Maven also had a few thousand others while Team Zero only had themselves

Tibstrike

Cool to read a fight featuring an Ascender fighting like an ascender. Weird how it wasn't any of the 5 Ascenders in Team Zero though nor an actual Ascender.

Observer Whimsy

I honestly cannot imagine they can empower her further. Iirc dao children get all the resources in the universe, second only to ascender tiers. I’m guessing they had some sort of additional, secret ascender level treasure to boost her, and i don’t think things get beyond that level, with the only exception being minkalla probably. I’m curious if she can even use it again. I thought that cutaway with Allie was her destroying whatever boosted Maven, but i must have misread

Bob Bryan

That overconfidence right there gets people killed. Maven didn't fight Matthew, Liz and Ester before. Before she was not able to fight shadow, this time she was almost able to kill her, at least lock her down. Maven is definitely going to try to make counters for those 3. Just saying they need to make sure they don't think just because they beat her this time and upgraded means next time will not also be a fight. Though I'm pretty sure Luna already taught them that

Nanooki12

Every other factions Ascenders seem to be more powerful. If 5 v 1 still gets their ass kicked.

saganatsu

maybe: but Maven's been at T25 for a while. Effectively, she can tune herself to better counter what she knows about Team Zero, but she already has all the nice goodies that Matt & Co are still waiting for. Matt's going to be significantly more powerful, while Maven will at best have a few different skills to counter him.

0x0F

For some reason seem to enjoy the chapters that don't focus on Matt more

SCDarkSoul

Goddamn. On the one hand, it's ridiculous Maven managed to put up such a huge fight against five Ascenders. On the other hand she had a lot of other elite forces with her, it was a fight they prepped hard for, a trap that they caught Team Zero in, and one they spring on them while Team Zero was returning from other combat and had other priorities. Yet Team Zero still walked away with their objective and no permanent casualties while inflicting ruinous amounts of deaths upon the Sect forces.

Violet

Still outperformed Maven in their 'escape with the supply depot's contents' missions!

C_Mantis

fixed ty

Bob Bryan

Matt needs to keep in mind that maven will definitely improve as well next fight. It won't be easy.

RedLeaf

Thanks for the chapter. Great fight, and now I'm wondering just what Maven has done to get such a power boost.

Gunnar Crider

Loved the chapter!! "Her cannons charged and fired in an instnat" Surprisingly I found an error.

adam1

I can't wait for the reveal of what Maven has done to power up.
