Nicholas Grey

After reading several times, the question occurred to me: why are they letting the Feds fight their optimal fight? Hear me out: Matt takes specific note that enemy Elites have been selected to counter his team individually. So WHY do they split up in such a way that each of them ends up fighting specifically the people intended to counter them? Why isn’t Liz targeting the anti-ice mage while Matt hammers the anti-liquid mage into space dust? Why is Matt fighting alone??

Nicholas Grey

I certainly hope they're documenting all of these acts of the Federation that are *technically* legal while violating the spirit of the RoE. If only to use as evidence when the Federation inevitably accuses them of war crimes as a propaganda tactic -mining the jump point -mass theft of civilian ships and using them as suicide bombers -failing to take measures to protect the civilian population from stray attacks -ordering their soldiers to surrender individually en masse (tying up processing power, potentially sneaking NON-surrendered personnel in with the others as saboteurs) -Cameron's suicide tactics (If it didn't even cross Matt's mind that his enemy might do this, after all Luna's training, then it's clearly not an accepted battlefield tactic) -Klix's surrender while still actively using her powers against Matt.

Alex

No, fuck the veil worlds. Living a simple life is fine, but it should be a choice, not forced

mrthorwahl

Matt's new nickname should def be Juggernaut.

MikeL

Check the discord

Havokk

Okay Im just going to throw this out here..... C.Mantis said we get some cool news tomorrow. so Im hoping that its either that the they are getting called back to the empire for the healing and during the healing cooldown they will also be attending the Ascension for Queen and adding to the ranks of team zero OR that book 5's long awaited audio release has finally come :)

Bob Bryan

I mean eventually they are going to make squads to specifically counter matt/Liz and aster. We know what the three are capable of but they enemy doesn't. So that does need build-up in narrative form. They hit the sects and feds, now they need a win with the republic. Plus don't forget the feds evil magic spartan, the halo ones, program. So yeah, ground work needs to be laid for the enemy to consider them a massive problem they are and try to counter that. Though I would like to see pov's from the enemy rules/ intelligence agents.

Istyatur Elestel

Maybe the republic too. Don't know enough about thier media policy to know if it could work.

Namorat

While Liz is a real horror movie villain with her fighting, a battle like this reminds me that Matt is like Michael Myers too. Simply an unstoppable force that brings despair to anyone opposing him.

Namorat

So the thing we got almost every week?

adam1

I agree. Unless they go after Tera Torment, I expect they will leave Guild territory and we'll get a recovery chapter followed by the beginning of the climactic battles. Probably a bit with Ascender counter team, then the final battles of the war.

Matt H

I expect we're going to get some time skips relatively soon after this fight. MLA will get some time to consolidate their current skills while the other GPs will have time to perform to reconnaissance and prepare a trap for them. I suspect the outcome of that trap/fight will either be the impetus for the end of the current war or the escalation to something bigger.

crusty pickle

So at some point, this war may get rather repetitive, maybe add more POV chapters of soldiers, or different rulers? Reacting to information or watching the newest ascenders wreck their armies

Lucas

Any ideas on the exciting news? I'm hoping its queen

Matt H

@Tristan You're right; this story is absolutely one of "might makes right". However, wars (for now) have specific limits on them which make them behave at least somewhat similarly to conventional wars. If the war could be won be capturing a single location or target (à la Capture the Flag) the Empire would either win or, in the worst case, draw due to DW, L&S, and MLA. However, that's not how the current war is functioning so Ascenders are more like an elite infantry, armored, air, etc. division: something that can break or win a stalemate in a location but can't be everywhere. And even when the rules of war change (whether that's in this war or in future wars), MLA won't really matter since they won't be at the necessary tier. Matt's Talent and its ramifications will be discovered by then and the wars will be decided by other people (the Emperor, Mara, Leon, etc.). The Empire's goal, long term, is to stave off a T35+ war for long enough that Matt can start to revolutionize the Empire. If it can be delayed long enough then the Empire will have sufficient resources that they'll "win" the utterly pyrrhic victory that a T35+ war would be. They need to get to the point that the other, hostile GPs realize that even a T35+ war wouldn't allow them to "level the playing field" and that the best course of action is to ally, vassalize, etc. with the Empire.

Jake Kimmerly

Oh 100% but it's only useful propaganda for Feddy controlled space probably

Jake Kimmerly

I do agree with the not a Serious attempt read. I think the Feds probably have more assassins like the one that was shadowing L&S because that character seemed a cut above the mooks in this chapter

Daniel S

$20 says Federation clips a recording of the team destroying the civilian ships filled with bombs and goes look at the evil empire/guilds massacring fleeing civilians.

Tristan R Mitchell

I mean, the only reason the wars aren't won by individuals is the rules of war, at least in this universe. When everyone is a T0 mortal like in our world it is different, but without the rules it would be a competition of "who has the most T40+ combatants" and "who can hit the homeworlds fastest".

this is a great chapter! The fight was incredible, and I felt it perfectly walked the line of showing real threat to MLA and crew while also showing just how terrifyingly powerful they are. Specifically, the mana drain woman (because of information gathered, not ability to kill Matt), detonating cores, and the combination of attacks enabled by Klix seemed like credible threats to Matt. Seeing Matt do some fun tricks with his Domain was also impressive, and a good way to show power! I especially like the part at the end, pulling a bit back from all of the battling and making it mean something. Matt choosing to spare someone even as they broke the rules (though to be fair, I'd bet Klix kept her slowing ability on to give herself more time to scream "WAIT WAIT WAIT I'M SURRENDERING"), and Matt noticing the devastation he left and actually fixing it. It'd be so easy to just move on, and Matt recognizing and solving problems he created for others is so in line with his character. Sorry, I know this is a long ramble and whatnot, but I figured there's no reason not to

Zachary Blevins

I would like to see one of these battles from the enemies point of view and what it’s like to fight, Matt and Liz and scoop

Envoy

I just hope that it doesn't come back to bite him in the ass or if it does that it changes him from then on. He's clearly the most powerful at his tier and I see him as a new Waters. He should destroy his enemies to erase all threats.

Violet

Really nice job of maintaining a sense tension in this one. Team Zero.B have been kicking a lot of butt recently, so this does a nice job of reinforcing that the stakes are still very high for them.

C_Mantis

Yeah what we were calling peak got turned into pinnacle but the numbers stay the same.

Drew H.

I think there is a typo with Klix. In the line " Stick knocked back Kilx from their battle she redirected herself to Matt." The "i" and "l" are swapped

Matt H

Yes and no, I think. Yes, they lost a significant chunk of their elites, but Askor will be returning with real, actionable intelligence about MLA's abilities, talents, etc. since I'm sure the Federation fighters were all collecting and sharing intelligence with their AIs during the battle. If that enables them to set up a successful trap down the line when combining with the Republic's and the Sect's pinnacle Elites then I think that'll be a worthwhile trade for them. I think this was a serious but not a Serious attempt to actually take out MLA. The Serious attempt will come later with more people after further scouting and reconnaissance. Plus, MLA (and L&S) may be strong, but they can't be everywhere; they can't win the war by themselves. Wars are won and lost by numbers and logistics and the Empire is fighting a 2 vs 3 war so they're at the disadvantage on that front.

Greg Lambert

Powerful and good chapter.

Sanairb

I think you hit a good middle spot.

Havokk

Him killing her still could have worked within his character if he warned her to drop the active skill or he wouldnt consider this a surrender rather the fight continuing. but yeah this was just spot on

Havokk

maybe that will be his Sect name just like they call Duke Waters the drowner

adam1

I just realized there's a lot of synergy between Matt and Duke Waters from Echoes #4. Matt is definitely building a reputation that he used to keep the Federation army in line despite the injuries on their side.

Disclancer

So just Dame-Askor managed to flee out of the named fighters? Hell of a butchers bill for the feddys

Havokk

So Ezra mentioned that they should have a team name and after this battle and the previous ones in the guild their team name should be "Immediate Surrender" it even goes with the "I" theme. Ezra would even like it if enemies took it the wrong way. Fantastic fight it was exciting to read and showed the power of MLA. Yes they did get hurt in the fight but this was am ambush all along and while the bulk may not have been the perfect counter for them the Federation did have enough that anyone short of an Ascender definitely would have fallen to it.

Notanautomaton

In a comment above C Mantis says "we address it more next chapter but tldr is out of the pinnacle elites 2 dead 2 captured 1 escaped. For peak elites 15 or so dead 5 captured as well as 20 dead assassins." Which might indicate that that is going to get retconned to be 30-60 pinnacles, as I doubt that the Feddies would be able to handle losing 24/30 of their best fighters.

adam1

Dame-Askor also escaped Liz. It said that Mercury was waiting to capture escapees, but we didn't get confirmation for the capture of either of the two escapees in chapter that I can see.

adam1

It was in Chapter 295. "A Great Power might only have thirty to sixty peak elites on the level of Dao Children, Graduates, Chimera, or Paladins spread between all twenty Tiers that the wars were fought on. Those were the exceptional few. " Based on this, the 5 main targets were the peak elite, and the others were supporting elites but not quite to that level.

BurnNote

Empire has Graduates

alex bozdog

I thought mercury caught the final pinnacle elite wouldn't that make it 3 captured and 2 dead

alex bozdog

there were 5 arch elites, 3 captured 2 dead. about 10 one step lower fighters also took part and some died and of the 25 ish hidden assasins I think all were wiped

adam1

Yeah, and Cameron going kamikaze on him after burning essence on his spells was a cool way to show how far gone Cameron was. It's been said before that often people will never do that even when they're about to die since its so ingrained to not screw up your cultivation. It would be good to hear how much Dame-Askor crippled her future by burning essence to escape.

James Faulkner

Goddamn, Matt roasting Cameron alive is metal as fuck and I love the moments when they realize they can’t do shit lol

Notanautomaton

A few chapters back you mentioned that eaxh power had 30-60 elites. I can't find it now because I'm on phone, but was that pinnacle, peak, or just all elites?

Sean McClain

Great battle, using the reflection against the reflection fighter was well done and well told.

Bob Bryan

Thank you. Didn't they capture one assassin though at the end. The one he put the Manticles on?

C_Mantis

fixed

Joe Smith

“She’d been regulated…” I believe you want the word “relegated.”

0x0F

Empire: Graduates Corps: Chosen Republic: Everborn Federation: Slayer

C_Mantis

Thats exactly why he could have killed her. In the first draft he did kill her because of that but it wasn't how I wanted Matt to react.

mitchell kaiser

Fantastic chapter thanks for all your hard work!

Andrew Glass

There’s gotta be something illegal with the Kilax person using their talent on him while simultaneously surrendering right? Could be why Matt was sure he could get out of the rule breakage, but still seems wrong

William Johnson

That was a good fight, well worth the wait!

Anime Problem

Yeah this is where Matt should start being called the "Human Dragon" by his enemies

Sezra_

Thanks a bunch! ʕ•ᴥ•ʔゞ゛

Dan

Great chapter as always

Patrick Brennan

One of the best in a while. Definitely worth the wait

C_Mantis

They are popular more than then guilds specializing in making them thanks to their last Ascender level person being a speedster.

Branden Rudolph

TFTC!!!

C_Mantis

cyberforce is guilds but its otherwise pretty correct. Note anyone just under a ascender level fighter can and might be called a pinnacle elite as a catch all term.

MikeL

Does the Guilds specialize in Speedsters, that a team was created and seemed to block their advancement?

Derze

Damn

C_Mantis

we address it more next chapter but tldr is out of the pinnacle elites 2 dead 2 captured 1 escaped. For peak elites 15 or so dead 5 captured as well as 20 dead assassins.

Istyatur Elestel

Nice chapter, I see what you meant by an important fight. Does anyone have a list of all the ascender-and-near-ascender equivalents? I've got Empire: ascenders Sects: young masters, Dao child Clans: Legends, Inheritors Corps: ?, cyberforce, paladins Guilds: Heros Monster Collective: Alphas, Chimeras Republic: Gladiators Federation: ?, archwarriors But I think there are some mistakes in that.

C_Mantis

Asters guy got captured by Mercury but yeah that was the run down of the Pinnacle Elites. Lots of the lesser fighters died

Bob Bryan

So, if you can tell us how many of the elites on the federation side died/were captued/ escaped. Its a little unclear at the end.

Matt H

Exciting chapter! With all the new names it was a little hard to keep score, but did I get this right? Matt had one kill and one capture, Liz had one kill, and Aster didn't get anyone?

RedLeaf

Thanks for the chapter. Great fight!

MikeL

Cool news. Is this about Aster! 😁

Kasamuri

Thanks for the Chapter

Miguel Canarte

thanks
