Jason Todd Workout (Process)

The first image is my VERY scribbly ideas for the ROBINS cover I did a couple years back. (Time flies!) They went with No.4, but I was always kind of fond of the second idea. So after some time I finally finished it on my own. (Honestly, I could do the others too, but you know. I should draw someone other than Jason. Hah!)
The Inks: Which I go back and adjust throughout the whole process, cause I'm a forever-noodler.
Basic Flats: You'll notice a texture over the image here. I don't know why, but putting a texture on my canvas early on always feels NICE. I can't do super smooth stuff 90% of the time and will always add some form of texture to my work.
Flats (refined): Adjusting inks and colorizing them. (I love color holds. Fight me!) I also added in a cast shadow to really sink him into the setting.
Rendering 1: Basic shapes of shadow and some texture. This is the part of my process where I'm feeling my way around and trying to see the final image in my head. (I'm one of those artists who has to dig around in the clays of creation to find what I'm trying to make.)
Rendering 2: Adding in some extra elements to balance out composition and continuing to render.
Rendering 3: Same, but adding in lighting effects.
Finalizing: I decided it was too cold and not a welcoming palette for a pinup. So I opted to have the morning sun lighting up the gym to unify the whole thing.

Thank you! And as for the rendering question: that's just been years of adjusting and learning what works for my inks; and not fighting them! Haha. I'm constantly trying to find the right balance of information; but I KNOW what works on my inks now (after 10 years in the biz) and those are the keystones I hold tight, even when I get experimental.

I love seeing all your sketches! The number 5 one is my fav--I love his little pose for the camera, he's so cute. A question though--about how long do you think it took you to develop your rendering process/style? You seem to have it pretty down. I'm fairly confident in my inking but still feel like its taking a while to find a rendering style I like.

Good lord I SPRINTED HERE when I saw Jasons name and I was not disappointed! 😍😍😍 gorgeous. I love the progress pics and seeing all the possibilities you had in your head for the robins cover. I love the one of him sitting with the boxing gloves too!
