In this live-action adaptation of the beloved children's tale by Dr. Seuss, the reclusive green Grinch (Jim Carrey) decides to ruin Christmas for the cheery citizens of Whoville. Reluctantly joined by his hapless dog, Max, the Grinch comes down from his mountaintop home and sneaks into town to swipe everything holiday-related from the Whos. However, the bitter grump finds a hitch in his plans when he encounters the endearing Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen).

And the scene when the grinch is acting like a movie director is unscripted. That’s Jim approximating Ron Howard’s style of directing, but with Jim’s usual comedic energy. Right down to the hat the grinch puts on

Also that scene when the grinch swipes the tarp off the table was a complete accident. Jim was meant to knock the stuff off and completely slipped the tarp off, so he ran back to knock it over as improv.

The definitive version always has been and always will be the Chuck Jones animated 1966 special. I just watched it on Friday night.
