At first, I was really hoping that it would turn out that the rest of the footage was somehow doctored by Luthor, but after giving it some thought, I actually like that Gunn went for the moral being "Your parents' wishes and ambitions don't have to be yours". Superman protects Earth not because he was told to by his space dad and space mom, but because he loves its people.
