A spoiler free and pretty universal truth about time travel fiction in general: sometimes the rules of time travel are "because story telling". But don't worry, writers of Doctor Who will still make a valiant effort to explain, in the story's universe, why things are the way they are. So, you'll have to accept "because storytelling" and/or settle for "more will be revealed" as an answer for now.

I don't think it was even realistic for Pete to ask her "is that a phone?", nobody in the late 80's would've even considered that thing could've possibly been a phone.

I still think this was a great episode. If you had a time machine, who wouldn't go back to see relatives long gone, especially a parent you lost so young. I also really liked the Pete Tyler character.

I like Bobby Fish… but he’s got this fish gimmick

I forgot how emotional this episode gets, spent the last 10 minutes in floods of tears. In terms of why this interference matters more I think it’s cos usually they’re dealing with anomalies in the timeline, like how the human race should have been 90 years more advanced last episode but because this monster that shouldn’t be there showed up it screwed up the normal timeline. When they’re interfering with their own timelines that’s more hard coded so creates the anomaly they usually show up to deal with.
