We're learning right along side you all as we dive head first into the art and science of building an aluminum boat. This week's episode covers a topic that quite a few of you were curious about which is how do we create those sexy rounded curves on the hull from flat plates of aluminum. And the answer is a bit of sorcery mixed with some incredible experience and know-how from Dan & the team. I might be a newbie in this department, but the good news is I will be getting hours upon hours upon hours of practice, so hopefully I'll be a pro in no time π

We use a press break to bend metal plates. It looks and functions kinda like a heavy duty, industrial sized guillotine. It's fast and simple but can't make the varying radiuses on a single plate like that wheel can. For bending very thick steel hull plates for large ships to varying radiuses on a single plate, I've seen ship fitters heat up the plate along specifically laid out chalk lines and then pour water along the line. That induces a bend in the plate. The process is repeated until the bends in the plate match the template that the computer printed out.

Watched last night, our Friday evening must do. Very interesting episode. The way I'm wired I would find working that machine very tedious but necessary :) Exciting how the boat is coming together. We're grateful you can multitask building a boat and videography. I guess you've got a lot of practice sailing a boat and capturing great video. :)

Hey Filip! We will start outfitting the propulsion system in November, then the interior fitout starts early 2025. If we could splash and start doing sea trials by end of 2025 that would be a huge success for us.

nope, not steel. They bought an old garcia, aluminum hull and did a pretty major refit. It was sitting on the hard for 15 years or so. They put "lesser" aluminum alloy on instead of zincs. Says depending on the type of aluminum, it could be better and cheaper than zinc. Something to ponder, i suppose. have a g'day.

Estimates are in the range of 10,000 hours till splash, about 1/3 hull construction and 2/3 fit out. Right now weβre 6% ahead of schedule πͺ

Hey Renee, this seems to be a pretty popular question I should address in more detail but here is a comment I just posted today: It's way more competitive than you think. Here are some numbers, fully loaded displacement with fuel/water, etc. in pounds for comparison. Most manufacturers report a "light ship" weight but no one ever sails their boat like that so find the right number for loaded displacement. Delos 53 - 36,300 lb , Catana 50 OC 41,884 lb, HH 50 OC 37,479 lb, HH 50 Perf 35,200 lb, Outremer 51 31,085 lb. Keep in mind the other boats are a few feet shorter as well. If we can hit our weight target i think we'll be very happy with her. I have looked into Aurogel! Still doing research though.... A few cool options out there!

Just watching the latest YouTube episode. Youβre selling me on aluminium over glass. Very impressing pros. How does the overall weight compare to a fibreglass boat of the same size? And have you looked into Aerogel for thin, lightweight insulation?

Hi Iβve been following Delos four years. Best of all I was planning a trip to Brisbane Australia this August Thought well, if there theyβre still building the catamaran, Iβll go and visit. Believe it or not the day I phone Marina to see if youβre there they tell me the you sailed the day before. Also that you were heading to Europe.
