GFW - Wellness Center - Part 4
🕑 Added 2025-06-17 13:45:36 +0000 UTCI playfully tossed the hairband onto my desk, then took a moment to just gaze at myself in the mirror. My hair was a little flat from the band, and my eyes were still a bit sparkly. My shoulders were straighter than usual, thanks to Reva's awesome posture tips, and honestly, I didn't look too shabby at all!
Shaking off that thought, I happily went to get dressed. It was my usual office attire: slacks, a crisp white shirt, a black belt, and nicely polished shoes. For a quick second, I almost grabbed one of my super comfy, fitted tees, but then I remembered where I was headed!
As I finished buttoning up my shirt, my eyes landed on the pill organizer on my dresser. Everything was still perfectly arranged, and today's little row was waiting for me. I took a small breath, opened the tray, and cheerfully took all four capsules without a second thought, vitamins, hormone balancer, and whatever that last one was. Dr. Levin might have explained it once, or maybe not, but either way, I just took them.
Stepping out into the hallway, I saw my sister already tying her shoes by the door. She looked up with a smile.
"All good?" she asked.
"Yep!" I replied automatically.
She gave me that sweet little smirk. "Leaving the hairband at home today?"
I playfully rolled my eyes. "Oh, so funny!"
"Hey," she chuckled, "I said it looked cute! That wasn't an insult!"
I just smiled and slipped past her, pulling on my jacket as I opened the door.
"Try not to nod off at your desk again!" she added playfully.
"Only if you promise not to share anything about the 'woman's gym'!" I shot back with a grin.
She laughed. "Deal!"
The door closed softly behind me, and I let out a happy sigh into the morning air.
By the time I reached the office, the lobby was already buzzing with energy. I hopped into the lift, pressed the 12th floor button, and checked my reflection in the shiny chrome. My shirt was perfectly crisp, my hair neatly pushed back. No obvious signs of my interesting morning! Nothing that would cause any fuss.
When I got to my floor, Camille gave me a cheerful wave as she passed. "Morning, Derek! You look... so fresh!"
I offered a polite smile. "Thanks! The vitamins are really doing their thing, I guess!"
She nodded, as if that explained everything, and then cheerfully disappeared down the hallway.
At my desk, I powered up my screen, checked Slack, cleared a few unread emails, and happily dove into editing a campaign deck for the afternoon presentation.
James popped by mid-morning, playfully tossing a protein bar onto my desk. "Fuel!" he said. "Second day back, you're on a roll!"
"Trying to keep it up!" I said. "Feeling genuinely better, actually!"
"Good," he said, lowering his voice a little. "Still doing that mysterious gym thing?"
I nodded without looking up. "Yeah! Second session's tomorrow!"
"Still keeping it a secret, huh?"
"Not yet!"
He gave a slow, mischievous grin. "It's either some super-secret underground fight club, or you're being trained by awesome monks!"
"Let's go with monks," I muttered with a smile.
He laughed, gave my shoulder a friendly pat, and strolled back to his desk. The rest of the day just unfolded so smoothly.
By the time I got home, it was dark again. My sister had already eaten – she'd neatly packed leftovers in the fridge with a sweet little sticky note that read, "Eat light." She was becoming this wonderful mix of roommate, wellness coach, and incredibly observant sibling! I really didn't mind. But lately, it felt like everyone around me had joined a fantastic team I hadn't quite signed up for yet.
I microwaved a small bowl of rice and vegetables, ate in peaceful silence, then shuffled off to my room, only bothering to turn on one gentle lamp. After dinner, I went to my room to change into something super cozy. It had been a long day, work was calm but mentally tiring, and the thought of just relaxing for a few hours before drifting off to sleep sounded absolutely perfect.
I opened my wardrobe like usual, expecting to grab my old cotton shorts and a comfy, oversized T-shirt. But they weren't there!
Instead, folded so neatly on the shelf, were a brand-new pair of soft, slate-pink lounge shorts with a delicate drawstring, and a short-sleeved top in light beige, scoop-necked, smooth, with a lovely drape that definitely didn't come from any men's section I'd ever shopped in!
I stared at the set for a moment.
"Hey!" my sister said, suddenly appearing at the doorway like she'd been waiting for this exact moment. "Those are for you!"
I turned, holding up the top. "Where's my usual comfy stuff?" Just then, my sister walked past my door, carrying a laundry basket. "Hey!" I called out, holding the outfit up. "Where's my regular stuff? Like... my T-shirts, sweatpants, my shorts?"
She paused, then leaned back with a completely unapologetic and adorable look. "I tossed them!"
I blinked. "Wait. What?!"
She shrugged. "They just didn't fit the new routine! Reva messaged earlier, she and Dr. Levin thought it might be helpful if you switched to lighter homewear at night. Something soft, less bulky. It's supposed to help your nervous system really settle down after sessions."
I raised an eyebrow. "They're suggesting clothes now?"
"Not suggesting," she said with a sweet smirk.
"So I made sure there's no clutter pulling you back into old habits. Your wardrobe is part of your happy environment now!"
"You actually threw out my clothes?" I said, a little louder this time.
"Don't be so dramatic!" she said, setting the laundry basket down. "I dropped them in the donation bin downstairs. Most of them were practically falling apart anyway!"
I stood there, a little stunned, holding the top like it might suddenly give me a hug.
"I didn't agree to this!"
She crossed her arms. "You're the one who passed out and gave everyone a good scare! You're the one the doctor said needed a complete refresh. I'm just making it super easy for you to stick to their wonderful suggestions!"
"It's not prescribed," I said.
She arched an eyebrow.
"Do you have any other options tonight?"
I looked around. My drawer was empty, my closet reorganized. Just two more sets of this lovely loungewear hanging inside. No hoodies, no T-shirts, no way out!
"Nope," I muttered.
"Exactly!" she said. "So stop your gentle complaining and put it on. You've got gym again in the morning!"
She turned and cheerfully walked away, leaving me standing there, outfit still in hand. And what truly stunned me wasn't that I had no choice tonight.
I stood alone in my room for a long time after she left. The scoop-neck top and those pale, peach-colored shorts sat on the edge of my bed, almost like they were inviting me. Daring me to say no, even though I knew there was no one left to say it to.
I instinctively opened the bottom drawer, as if just maybe one pair of old basketball shorts or an oversized tee had miraculously survived. Nothing, just neatly folded cotton loungewear, in light, calming pastels.
I sat down on the bed, sighing, and slowly pulled off my shirt. Then my pants. And my boxers. One by one, it felt like I was shedding the last few bits of my old self.
I slid into the shorts, wonderfully elastic, and high at the waist. They gently hugged my hips, not tightly, but perfectly aligned. Like they were tailor-made for a shape I hadn't even realized I was fitting into.
Then came the scoop-neck top, just low enough to show a bit more of my collarbone than I was used to. The sleeves hugged my arms gently. The fabric clung in places no guy's T-shirt ever had, in the most comfortable way.
I stood still, bare feet pressing into the floor, the soft hem of the shorts brushing mid-thigh, the neckline of the top dipping just enough to make me feel... wonderfully redefined.
I didn't look like a girl, but I didn't look like my old Derek, either.
I climbed into bed without turning off the lamp. I lay there on my back, happily staring at the ceiling again, like it held all the wonderful answers that hadn't changed since yesterday.
The next morning, I woke up earlier than usual, probably just out of habit now! I stretched, stood up, and went to the mirror. My hair, a little damp from sleep, had fallen across my face again. It was getting longer than I'd realized until now. Long enough to be a little playful during workouts. Long enough to need something to keep it back.
I sighed and glanced at the door. My sister was still sound asleep. I really didn't want to wake her, especially not over something so small. So I did what anyone might do: I tiptoed into her room as quietly as I could and started looking through the top drawers of her dresser. Makeup, earrings, neatly folded scarves... but no hair ties. Nothing quite right. I checked a tray on her vanity, some clips, bobby pins, random cute accessories, but still no luck.
Then my eyes lit up! There it was, the small, black hairband with the pretty pearl on the side, sitting exactly where I'd left it yesterday on my desk. I really didn't want to wear it again. But I also couldn't walk into that studio with hair playfully falling into my eyes every time I stretched or moved.
I stared at it for another moment, then gently picked it up. I slid it into place, brushing my hair back as neatly as I could. The elastic held just right, perfectly, honestly. Like it had been made for this, for me.
I stepped into the GFW - Wellness Center, and Morgan was already at the front desk, as cheerful as ever! She looked up and smiled warmly when she saw me.
"Good morning, Derek!" she said smoothly. "Reva made a lovely note after yesterday's session. She's asked that we update your support wear moving forward."
I raised an eyebrow but didn't say a word. I already had a good feeling about what was coming!
Morgan turned and sweetly retrieved a fresh garment bag from the cabinet behind her. She handed it to me with that same calm, efficient grace. "Today's set includes a comfy compression sports bra and your regular supportive top," she explained.
"Layered wear will really help with stability during the longer flow sequences, especially with all the wonderful stretch and rotation in today's class!"
I held the bag, trying not to react, but a little thrill ran through me. The material inside felt light and wonderfully familiar. But now it had a purpose I couldn't possibly ignore.
I nodded slowly. "Same changing room?"
"Of course!" Morgan said. "Take all the time you need. Let us know if anything feels a little snug."
I happily walked down the quiet hallway toward the back stairwell, the garment bag tucked under my arm like a lovely little secret. I closed the door behind me and gently locked it. Then I hung the garment bag on the hook and unzipped it.
Inside: a beautifully folded, blush-toned compression sports bra, the kind with nice, wide straps. Beneath that, a form-fitting white support top, slightly cropped and smoothly lined. And finally, today's fabulous outfit is a fitted lavender tank and a pair of soft gray shorts with cute side vents and a slightly higher rise than what I'd worn before.
I took a deep, happy breath, peeled off my hoodie and T-shirt. One by one, I changed first the sports bra. I pulled it on carefully, adjusting the straps. It hugged a little tighter than I expected, but in the most comfortable way. Then the support top. It layered easily over the bra, compressing just enough to beautifully reinforce the shape. Last came the tank and shorts. My chest didn't shift a bit when I moved!
By the time I stepped into the studio, no one looked at me right away. No one said anything. Even before she turned around, I knew Reva had seen me. She stood near the front, gently adjusting a light resistance strap between her hands. When she looked up, her eyes kindly settled on me, not in surprise, but with warmth.
Her smile was subtle, but absolutely unmistakable. "Derek," she said warmly, loud enough for the whole room to hear, "that looks much, much better!"
Every head turned, just for a second. Sara gave a quick glance, then returned to her mat without missing a beat. Lili raised her eyebrows, her smile a lovely mix of approval and curiosity. One or two women nodded politely. But most just watched, and it felt like a silent welcome.
And Reva didn't stop there. "Your alignment is going to improve so much with that added support," she continued. "Thanks for trusting this wonderful process!"
I opened my mouth, unsure what to say. All I could manage was a small, grateful nod.
I made my way to my mat at the back of the room, trying not to notice how the sports bra gently pressed across my chest with each breath. The double-layered support top clung a little more with movement, keeping everything perfectly held in place, just like she said it would. It didn't bounce. It didn't sag. It felt amazing!
Class began the way it always did, quiet breathwork, grounding poses, Reva's voice gliding through the room like warm, soothing water. But something felt wonderfully different today, and it wasn't just the clothes. It was the way the women around me looked at me now. Like I had crossed some invisible, welcoming threshold.
Lili smiled at me during warm-ups and even slid her mat a little closer than usual. "Cute top!" she whispered. "You match better than half of us now!"
I chuckled, unsure whether to thank her or playfully deny it. "Accidental, I swear!"
Sara, nearby, added with a sweet smirk, "Accidental coordination is still coordination!"
Then, during a side-lunge hold, another woman, someone I hadn't even spoken to before, offered me a quick, friendly shoulder tap. "You've got a really centered hold! That took me weeks to learn!"
I blinked. "Thanks! Still feels like I'm figuring it out most of the time!"
There were warm glances and nods, even that quiet, lovely sense of inclusion I could truly feel in the room.
Class ended with a long, seated stretch, palms open on our knees, eyes closed, breath deep and steady. Reva's voice came through gently. "Let your body remember this moment held, aligned, wonderfully supported." And for the very first time... I truly did.
When I opened my eyes, I wasn't in a rush to leave. I happily stayed on my mat, slowly rolling my shoulders, trying to soak in that strange, wonderful new feeling: ease. The women around me were chatting quietly, gathering their water bottles and towels. I started to reach for my own when I heard Lili's friendly voice behind me.
"Hey!" she said, leaning down toward me. "We're heading to the café across the street. Just a little post-session chill. You should totally come!"
I blinked. "Me?"
"Yeah, you!" she grinned. "You survived the double-layer day! That definitely earns you an iced matcha, at minimum!"
Before I could answer, Sara chimed in. "Seriously! We go most Thursdays. Sometimes Reva even joins us too!"
My heart fluttered a little faster with excitement. "Oh. Uh... yeah. I guess I could stop by!"
"You don't have to change!" Lili added, eyeing my outfit with a playful glance. "We all just go as is. Nobody cares. You look great!"
I managed a half-smile. "Thanks! That's... really nice to hear."
They moved ahead toward the exit, still laughing about something sweet, and I gathered my things slowly. A week ago, I wouldn't have even dreamed of this being casually invited to hang out after class. To be a part of the group!
I stood near the front door of the studio, gym bag slung over one shoulder, shoes in hand, trying to act all casual while the rest of them gathered around the mirror wall, fixing ponytails and retying laces. Lili and Sara were laughing about something, probably a fun inside joke from a previous class. A few of the other women joined in, light and effortless.
Then Reva appeared, dressed in a cute cropped jacket over her studio clothes, her hair tied back in a high, easy knot. She looked absolutely radiant! Like she could've stepped right out of a wellness commercial. And she was coming too!
Lili caught my eye. "You coming, Derek?"
I hesitated. My heart immediately said yes! It wasn't even about the café. It was the lovely idea of sitting across from Reva, hearing her laugh in a more relaxed setting, maybe even playfully asking her on a date that had nothing to do with posture or alignment!
But then I looked down at myself. The sports bra pressed lightly beneath the layered tank, subtle but undeniably there. The support top smoothly hugged my waist. The gray shorts were short, and the headband still pulled my hair back, neat and delicate. And suddenly, all that wonderful comfort I'd felt during class gently evaporated.
"I, I think I'll skip it," I said quickly. "I've got some things to take care of at home."
Lili looked a little surprised. "Are you sure? It's just right across the street!"
Sara added, "You'd blend in perfectly! Nobody out there is really paying attention."
But I gently shook my head. "I just... I'm not quite ready to wear this outside the studio yet."
Reva looked at me with such kindness. "You're doing so wonderfully!" she said softly. "There's no pressure to take the next step before you're truly ready."
I nodded, clutching my bag a little tighter. "Thanks."
They headed out a moment later. I watched them go through the glass, laughing as they crossed the street in the morning sun, just glowing. And I stayed behind, feeling a mix of longing and peace.
On my way back home, I was still thinking about the café, how close I'd come to joining them, and how something as small as a support top and a headband had kept me standing alone on the sidewalk instead. But that thought sweetly faded the moment I stepped into my house.
I had barely kicked off my shoes when I noticed it: my wardrobe had been lovingly touched again. Not just the homewear, not just the gym clothes, now my work clothes too! At first glance, nothing looked different. The slacks were still neatly folded. Button-down shirt ironed and lined up like always. But when I reached for my go-to undershirt, I gently paused.
Because folded between my office shirts was something that didn't quite belong. A sports bra! A beige one this time, much softer, seamless, made to vanish under clothing. The kind meant for lovely discretion. And right next to it was a note in my sister's familiar handwriting:
"Morning! Reva said full-day support will help your posture carry over from the gym."
I stood there for a moment, holding it, my heart ticking just a tiny bit faster than it should have. This wasn't the firm gym compression bra I'd worn under my tank top. This was something else entirely. Subtler, designed to beautifully disappear under a dress shirt. Designed to stay on all day without being noticed unless you were the one wearing it.

Nice descriptions, good character development. Slow development and baby steps, is a good description of the progression.

Very slowly the conversion starts. One baby step at a time!
