Shotgun slugs demonstrate bizarre "ping pong ball physics"
🕑 Added 2021-03-02 07:11:30 +0000 UTCWhen we filmed this, it seemed nothing was really going as planned and I almost abandoned this project completely. These "twister" slugs consistently separated from the wad- the little screw kept getting stripped out. The footage actually turned out quite surprising as the defect caused unexpected results like the tennis racket theorem and the magnus effect.
Currently, I'm having much more luck keeping video monetized and again I need to inform all you Patreons that if you need to reduce or eliminated you pledge, there will be no hard feelings. Thank you!

No worries, Jeff. Us long-timers got your back, always have. -Ed on the Ridge

There is an old vid of Jeff’s where a shotgun round circled to the left behind the target. This is a perfect example.

I have boobtube Red so I can watch offline, no ads is a +.
Pledging for over a year and a half and no regrets.
I would love to go out for a pint or two with you guys. If you ever visit the Scottish Outer Hebrides let me know 😁

He keeps them unlisted for us Patreons before they are released.

I've read about the Magnus Effect in various external ballistics articles and papers - mostly in the context of crosswind lift or drop - but this is the first time I've seen real-time evidence of the magnitude of the effect. You would think that it would simply cause a projectile to hit a little higher or lower than normal - but seeing a heavy lead projectile actually rise after traversing a hundred yards - overcoming the force of gravity completely - was a major surprise. The surface roughness and large projectile diameter, I suspect, was the reason (and, of course, the yaw) - but it gives me new respect for aerodynamic forces and their effect on trajectory. A Magnus Effect wing on a model plane you can sort of intuitively "feel" - but on a lead projectile? Pretty interesting.

I'm not sure whether it's intentional, but youtube is showing this video as "unlisted," which is a little odd if you're asking for likes.
Thanks for taking the time to do long range videos... I'm sure it brought on it's own set of challenges. This was one of the best videos I've seen in a while. I wonder if these issues happen more often and just don't reveal themselves at 10 or 20 yards
Definitely keeping up my pledge(s) for this channel

I use an adblocker, so this makes up for it

Actually pretty interesting to see these effects. As for reducing or eliminating my pledge: you aren't getting rid of me that easily! :)
