Redefining our understanding of INERTIA

I found it interesting that - at least for young whippersnappers like you - the word "Inertia" is used both to describe the classic attribute, which is resistance of a body to motion when at rest, and to the traditional meaning for momentum, which is the resistance of a moving body to slow down. Back when I took physics -- just after it was invented - momentum was exclusively for moving bodies and inertia was exclusively for bodies at rest. Of course, the equations that apply are identical in the sense that they only involve mass and velocity. I agree - it is totally counter-intuitive that the blast would not direct rearward upon detonation; it makes it seem as if the deflagration pressure wave velocity is subsonic, which seems almost impossible. It could be that the base of the cartridge blows off immediately, so the gas vents forward and never builds up enough internal pressure to do much more than just blow the foil off. Odd. But interesting!
