Progress Report - Week of 2024/07/07

I'm working on switching ADHD meds from a stimulant to a nonstimulant (because the stimulant meds will eventually make my heart explode if I keep taking them for too long), and it hasn't exactly been smooth sailing. This was the first week where I stopped taking the stimulant meds entirely, and it certainly shows in my productivity! That's also why this progress report is coming to you two days late. It's amazing, the difference that a little pill can make. Anyway, here's a rundown of what I did last week.
VIDEO RELEASED: "Delicious in Dungeon" was released on Sunday to a very mixed reception! People seem to enjoy the video, itself, but heavily disagree with many of my opinions regarding the characters, which is about what I expected. What I didn't expect was how so many people outright interpreted the motivations of various characters differently than I did, and I have an idea about why this could be, even though it's pure speculation. I suspect that the people who say, for example, that Senshi was ignoring Chilchuck in episode two because he was fascinated with the implications that the blade traps had for cooking (instead of what I said, which is that Senshi was setting the traps off to get back at Chilchuck for telling him what to do) watched the sub instead of the dub. I haven't seen the sub, so I have no idea if this holds water or not, but I would bet dollars to donuts that the issues I have with the characters are much less pronounced in the sub than they are in the dub, and that's what caused such a great miscommunication between myself and the fraction of the viewership that so vehemently disagreed with my interpretation of the characters. To be clear, there's nothing wrong with watching the sub or the dub. One isn't more valuable or "correct" than the other. But (as I'm sure you know if you've been around this channel for any length of time), the two can vary drastically in their presentations of the same scene. Again, this is pure speculation. I don't mean for it to sound like I'm special super smart Youtube man with many subscriber and therefore my interpretation can't possibly be wrong. I just thought it was an interesting idea and felt like sharing.
POST-PROCESSING: Made a new thumbnail for "Delicious in Dungeon" to see if that helped it get more views. I'm not sure I saw a significant increase in viewership, especially compared to the Frieren video, but it's hard to know. I think I like this new design better, anyway, so I'll probably stick with it.
Anime Club: Anime club happened! We had a great discussion about Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song. I hated it! And I love talking about anime I hate! Classic 5.5/10 show. We also voted for Serial Experiments Lain to be the subject of this month's club discussion, which is going to be. . . ooooooh boy, it's gonna be, uh, "fun."
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: Watched the premier of "Delicious in Dungeon" with folks on Youtube.
RESEARCH: The rest of the working time for this week was taken up by watching The Apothecary Diaries for the new video. That's most of why things got so derailed, productivity-wise. Not only am I starting a new medication regimen, I'm starting a new medication regimen at a time when I need to be exclusively focused on one thing for long periods of time and taking careful notes on it. I'm gonna be honest, that's not something my brain was capable of last week. I took notes. Very few of them are good (although, some of them are very good! I think I have a great angle for the video and I can't wait to share it with you all.) I don't know how long the note taking process is going to take (although I'm still going to try to have the video out by the end of the month, early August at the very latest), and the script writing process probably won't be much easier, but I'll keep you all in the loop.
MORE RESEARCH: Rightfully, there should be a bit more research time listed on Friday, but I forgot to write the time down that I spent going through the new seasonals. So far, very, very few things have popped out at us. We're going to keep watching Tasuuketsu for the absolute train wreck that it is, assuming it goes back to being funny bad instead of boring bad like it was in episode 2. I Want to Fuck My Toaste-, sorry, I mean, My Wife Has No Emotion caught our attention just because, well, we want to know whether or not he fucks the toaster. As for legitimately good shows, The Elusive Samurai seems incredible, but it's not for me. I just don't tend to get into historical military dramas like that. Rice and Ruin had a decent start to it, and I could see it doing cool things with its premise. Dahlia in Bloom and Quality Assurance in Another World both have potential, but the only show we're legitimately hyped for this season is No Longer Allowed in Another World. We're pretty confident that one's going to stay funny for four or five episodes, at least.

I say as someone who had a strongly different interpretation of that exact scene- No, I was watching the dub too. I did watch the sub later, since I find the differences interesting, but I saw the same thing you did. I just disagreed. I saw a man who has been living with and walking over traps for many years, simply ignoring the panic of someone he openly thinks is a child (literally calls him "half-foot kid" in that very scene in the dub). To me, this had "Dad thinks you're overreacting to a situation he's solved 1000 times and it'll be over soon if you just calm down." vibes, not "I am a homicidal maniac who will do things that might kill my companions over a petty slight" vibes. While the results may be the same, there is a difference between "I will cause dangerous situations because I don't believe you when you insist they're a threat" and "I know they're a threat but will cause them anyway for revenge." The former is far more forgivable than the latter. When Laios says he's a professional just trying to protect them, he tilts his head and grunts then never does anything like it again. Even acknowledging that Chilchuk does know traps better after all. He's being dangerously stupid and reckless, yes, and definitely at fault. It was a bad thing. But when you don't even blink at touching boiling oil, shrug off most hits easily, and have been doing things this way without harm for years, it's entirely reasonable to not grasp how deadly it is to others. Imo, his first character arch is over accepting that the others could know things about his home that he doesn't. I still gave you a like and such of course, I just had a very different view of the information we were given.
