What catches cosmic rays?
🕑 Added 2024-11-14 17:34:02 +0000 UTCAMS-02 experiment is installed on the ISS and is part of the CERN experiments. Why?
Good question. I don't know really haha:)
But the experiment control room is at the CERN base.
I had some photos somewhere... I'll find them and show you...
I was there, well, you can't go inside.
Otherwise, anyone will come, stick some shit in there and screw everything up. And America will be in shock...(It's USA's experiment mostly).
Well..ok!
AMS-02 works as a kind of sieve for the particles that pass through it. First, they get into a strong magnetic field, which bends their trajectory. This bend immediately gives scientists a hint about the charge and mass of the particle. There, using a school formula, you can figure it out:)
After that, the particle passes through several layers of different detectors. Each layer records its own: direction of movement, speed and energy of the particle. It's like a filter, where the particle leaves "traces" by which you can understand what exactly flew by - an ordinary proton or a rare antiproton, or something else.
The collected data allows us to study cosmic rays. Their composition and the composition of the stars from which these particles arrived. Or, more precisely, supernovae. Although there are now disputes about what are the sources of cosmic rays, haha:)
But if something rare occurs that goes "beyond the standard model" of the composition of cosmic rays - that's already interesting. Antihelium as example. It's almost impossible for it to form secondary in flux, so it must have come from somewhere, like antisupernovas or etc. we really don't know yet
But it's interesting....
I also added some pics from CERN and AMS-02 websites
The structure of AMS-02 sooo complicated, really. But you can see the magnet:)
