🕑 Added 2023-10-27 01:18:29 +0000 UTCHi all! Here's Newlife 0.8.3. I've been having a tough month and I'm aware this is very late, though I like to think it's a bit bigger than usual to partially make up for it. I'll be making a big effort to get the next one out in a quicker time.
This one adds the internal framework for NPC careers as well as some content additions. This is the sort of change that can be bug-prone, so please let me know if you see issues related to it.
I should also mention that I don't expect saves from old versions to work in this one.

Major changes & additions:
Added internal functionality for NPC careers, with their job being visible at a sufficient knowledge level.
Added a new scene with a sleazy landlord and your lesbian partner that can happen if you're unable to pay the rent.
Added a new friendship scene that can happen if you have an innocent female friend and also own the enormous teddy-bear, Mr. Snuggles.
Changes for user-submitted content:
Custom NPCs can now have their career set. NPCs without a set career will have one picked by the usual algorithm, just like with most other values.
Minor changes:
The amount you get from having your partner support you now varies based on their income.
Improved some of the spacing for descriptions in the NPC broswer.
Bugfixes:
Fixed some text issues. Thanks to Zab for reporting some of these.
Fixed an issue where some pregnancy text could incorrectly show at the office party even when the PC is not pregnant.
Fixed an issue reported by Sync where the bar-with-friend scene was sometimes referring to the PC's lesbian partner as a man.
Fixed an issue reported by Zab where the text in the bf's jerk friend ladder sex scene was often referencing the wrong relationship, resulting in your partner being referred to as “your acquaintance”.

Thanks! I've had a look over these for the upcoming release and fixed numbers 2 and 3. I couldn't find an issue with low-self-esteem as such, but I've adjusted how the partner effect is calculated so it should have a bit of a bigger effect on current love. I think I've also found the cause of the "my low-self-esteem PC fell out of love with her partner" reports I've had. A low-self-esteem PC gets a significant bonus to her maximum love score if she dislikes an NPC, but if their relationship improves then this will be lost, her love value will drop to the new cap, and she'll immediately fall out of love. This isn't a bug as such, and I sort of like the effect it has. I will make some adjustments to reduce the impact from going from disliked to neutral though.

Couple more bug-adjacent issues: 1. I'm not 100% sure but I think there may be something going on with the love decay toggle and characters with low self esteem + partner with a Partner Effect that has the "because you have low self esteem, you'll fall more in love with them" effect. I've had several games where my character falls out of love/loses a crush in a relationship like that, whilst having positive interactions with him every week. 2. This may have been pointed out already but in the windows that summarize what you know about a given NPC, their occupation is listed twice. It is showing at the beginning of the personality summary ("He works as an office drone."and then again I think right after the paragraph about your relationship status ( "You're dating, but not seriously. / He works as an office drone.¨). 3. is the appliance repair guy supposed to be having a day job and also moonlighting as a repairperson? The one in my current game is shown as "He works as an office drone" but also ¨He works as an electrical appliance repairman." Neither of the latter two are impactful, of course, but since it's a new system I wanted to feedback. And #1 may or may not be an issue at all and it was just my character being weird but it may be easier for you to look at the game's innards and see if it's interacting in an unexpected way than for me to poke around in sequential save files to try to find out... Thought for an additional option during the House Party sequence... Now that lesbian content is well and truly enabled, could the option to "Take a woman to bed" be added alongside the existing "Take a man to bed"?
