How well do those IcyDock 3.5in enclosures handle the heat from 7200 RPM drives? I’ve seen mixed reviews.

Micro ATX is definitely the way to go, I wish it was more popular. I also agree that 5.25 bays are ideal for the versatility they offer. For the more pedestrian options (SATA/SAS) iStarUSA, Silverstone, and StarTech also offer some great hot-swap solutions for a bit less money than the IcyDock options. Have you looked at the new 12th gen AliExpress "Erying" motherboards? I have an 15-12500H version on the way to test out. X16 and X4 slot ready to go, plus you can steal an M.2 slot for a second X4 while still leaving a boot M.2.
