I think it's less problematic, more "shy" in a sense. If I remember correctly, Howie has been always been a bit cautious on how to move forward in their relationship because he doesn't want to overwhelm Sooch. I think this is just another instance of that - wanting to move forward (perhaps wanting to share a bed again or wanting to just permanently scooch the beds together) but he doesn't want to impose that want on Sooch and make him feel obligated to go along with it. So instead it becomes awkwardly sitting on his own bed texting someone while Sooch casually brings his pillow over like "ah yes, we're sleeping on your bed this time. Got it" lol
