Rory is going to live in a college dorm (hence the matress) and will only see Lorelai on weekends and stuff .. they were just excited that whenever she wants to go home it won't be far bc Yale isn't that far away from Stars Hollow.

Because they WILL only be seeing each other on the weekends. Remember, the grandparents told Lor they were getting Rory a car for graduation and Lor said that's a great idea because it will make visiting easier on the weekends. It's a couple hrs of traveling from school to hm, not down the road. She's going to luve in a dorm.
