If you're interested, you can check out the Youtube channel "SpideyHypnosis". The creator is a real mentalist who has managed to fool Penn & Teller. And he's explaining what techniques shown in the show The Mentalist actually do work, which are exaggerated for the story-telling and which are madeup. It's quite interesting.
