Like others have said, San Junipero is basically Heaven on Earth and there's a choice to passover to be able to stay "alive" forever or not. Kelly's husband and daughter did not passover which is why we never saw them in San Junipero. Think of it as a virtual reality where your consciousness is your avatar that is free to do whatever you want, whenever you want, with other people just like you!

Also, to hopefully help with your confusion - this isn't one person's memories/mind. "San Junipero" as we saw at the end there was a whole "section" of this digital afterlife. All those people in there were other real people who chose to be there. These two found each other because they just...did. As people do.

This episode won a couple of Emmys, one for writing and one for best TV movie, and rightfully so, imo. Just a brilliant piece of television. Probably my favorite episode of the show.

Youre thinking of this virtual landscape as being in a persons head instead of thinking like internet/gaming wise, their brains are being connected to a virtual afterlife. The scene at the end with all the servers and the light bulb like things the robot arm was inserting. That was like USB drives of their consciousness being permanently plugged into the servers

This is one of my favorite Black Mirror episodes. The music, the setting, the cinematography, the acting and chemistry between the two leads is phenomenal. I love everything about it.
